The sport can be both recreational, focusing on learning the techniques required, and competitive where overall fitness plays a large role. It is also one of the oldest Olympic sports . Rowing was the first intercollegiate sport contested in the United States. The first rowing...

Women's Rowing Journal - Caitlin Doolin

Studying abroad in the fall semester was the experience of my life and I will never forget it. New Zealand is a beautiful country where people refer to themselves as Kiwi's, rugby is more than a sport - it is a religion - and sheep overrun the population. Athletically, being abroad was an interesting experience too. It is the first place I have ever been where I could switch on the television and actually find a station that broadcasted rowing races like football and it is where I had the opportunity to train for my first marathon, a feat I always marveled at tackling. New Zealand will always hold a special place in my heart and I miss it greatly. [more]

The Los Angeles rowing Club (LARC) is both a recreational and competitive rowing club. LARC was founded in 1985 by a group of ex-collegiate rowers looking for an outlet to pursue recreational and competitive rowing in the Marina Del Rey area. Since then, LARC has provided experienced rowers, as well as those athletes new to the sport, the kind of opportunity to enjoy the sport of rowing! LARC is a non-profit organization, a member of the United States Rowing Association (USRA), and dedicated to providing rowing opportunities within the Los Angeles area at the lowest possible cost to its members. LARC offers novice, intermediate and competitive programs in both sweep (one oar per person) and scull (two oars per person) rowing. Membership is open to everyone and members have access to club owned equipment for scheduled workouts. Novices can learn the basics of sweep rowing through the LARC Learn to Row program. LARC is located in Marina Del Rey at Mother’s Beach. Rowing programs are performed in the channels of Marina Del Rey between Mothers Beach and the break wall. The calm and flat waters of this location provide ideal conditions for rowing. LARC is managed by officers who are elected annually by the club membership. Offices include President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and Riggers. All members are encouraged to run for club offices, as well as volunteer time at any one of a number of club events (fundraisers, membership drives, etc). All club dues are put back into the club to maintain and upgrade the club's equipment and to promote those LARC crews competing in USRA sponsored regattas.
