To learn more about how animals suffer in rodeos, read PETA's Rodeo Factsheet
Rodeo promoters say that the animals are wild and rough, but without the use of spurs, tail-twisting, and bucking straps cinched tightly around their abdomen and groin, these frightened and often docile animals wouldn't even buck. They are terrorized into action when men shove electric prods into them, twist their necks, yank them by their tails or legs, slam them to the ground, or otherwise batter them. The fact that most of these innocent animals are eventually destined for the slaughterhouse in no way justifies compounding their agony along the way.
THE PRCA: ALL BULL
Complaints about rodeos are forwarded to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), which sends the complainant a "soothing" letter saying that PRCA's "humane rules" protect the animals. Actually, these rules are worthless; they are rarely enforced, and when they are, the fines imposed on the cowboys are so small as to be meaningless in comparison to the big prize money being vied for.

The Ellensburg Rodeo...The Tradition Lives On!
The Ellensburg Rodeo is one of the "old rodeos." It has earned its place as one of America's Top 25 professional rodeos. Started in 1923 with the same volunteer spirit that still "fuels the fire" of today's volunteers, the rodeo has grown from a local competition among ranch hands to the Professional event of today with over 500 contestants and prize money in excess of $250,000! Today's best riders, ropers, and wrestlers compete in what many consider to be the best rodeo arena in the nation. The Friday night opening performance starts in the evening and ends under the stars. The Saturday and Sunday afternoon "perfs" feel electrically charged by the brilliant blue sky. It all leads up to the Labor Day Monday Championship Finals... the best of the best dueling in the dirt! Surround all this with the fun of the Kittitas County Fair, the old-west hospitality of the City of Ellensburg, and you can understand why in Ellensburg, it's "More than just your average rodeo." http://www.idausa.org/facts/rodeos.html
Rodeo proponents claim this "sport" should be preserved as an American tradition that harkens back to the frontier days of the Old West, when cowboys tamed wild beasts with brute strength and cunning. What they fail to acknowledge is that rodeos harm animals who are forced to "perform" in a competition that is essentially a display of human domination over other species.
The modern "sport" of rodeo has strayed far from its origins in another exploitive part of American heritage, the cattle drive, when cows were rounded up and led long distances as a herd to their eventual slaughter. At least cowboys living and working on the range developed practical skills like roping and wrestling cattle in order to manage the herd, which would provide food for settlers who, in those days, would not even know what a vegetarian was. Today's "cowboys" are far removed from any purpose but deliberately hurting animals for prize money and to prove that they are "tough" enough to "break" supposedly wild animals.
In the notorious calf-roping event, cowboys demonstrate their ability to rope and tie up four- to five-month-old baby calves in the shortest amount of time. The calves burst from the gate at speeds approaching thirty miles per hour to escape handlers who twist and yank their tails. Cowboys then lasso the calves around the neck, often snapping their heads back as they come to an abrupt halt. Sometimes they are jerked over backwards in what rodeo participants call a "jerkdown." Competitors then slam the calves to the ground to stun them so they can tie their legs together. During these broadcasts on channels like ESPN, the camera always cuts away from the calf before he is thrown to the ground in order to spare the home audience the sight of such brutality. Even many cowboys agree that calf roping is inhumane. Keith Martin, the executive director of San Antonio Livestock Exposition, told the San Antonio Express-News, "Do I think it hurts the calf? Sure I do. I'm not stupid." (2)

Rodeo, New Mexico
Rodeo has been a boom town more than once and seems to be enjoying another round in the beginning of this century. Land is reasonably priced and the climate is what is called four gentle seasons. Friendly people and lots of room to have your privacy. They have the only gas stations in the area, two of three places to buy groceries, a laundromat, a Post Office, a tavern that serves great food, a garage, and more to come! The Rodeo Tavern serves top notch food on Friday and Saturday nights and has a special shrimp dinner on Wednesday nights. They are open at 4pm on Wednesday through Saturday, serving pizza on Thursday nights.
Owner Rob Bernard is your host.
The Rodeo Grocery Store and Cafe is under new management with the Cloudt family and experiencing a re-birth. They still serve the best cinnamon rolls and have fresh loaves of bread also.
Lots of old timers in there on a regular basis to shoot the bull with. Fun place!!
