Normally, climbers use gear and safety equipment specifically designed for the purpose. Strength, endurance, and mental control, as well as agility and balance, are required to cope with tough, dangerous physical challenges. Knowledge of climbing techniques and the use of essential pieces of gear and equipment are crucial.

Main article: History of rock climbing
Although the practice of rock climbing was an important component of Victorian mountaineering in the Alps , it is generally thought that the sport of rock climbing began in the last quarter of the nineteenth century in various parts of Europe. Rock climbing evolved gradually from an alpine necessity to an athletic sport in its own right. As rock climbing matured, grading systems were created in order to more accurately compare the relative difficulties between climbs. Over the years, both climbing techniques and the equipment climbers use to advance the sport have steadily evolved.

T HE SPORT of free climbing-climbing rocks using equipment for safety only-has grown very popular: hundreds of thousands of people practice the sport in the U.S. alone. Its popularity has grown in part because of advances in climbing equipment that make climbing safer.
These pages discuss the sport of free climbing-rock climbing using equipment for safety only. The sport presents a physical and mental challenge with minimal danger. Because of the potential for serious injury, much specialized safety equipment has been devised, making it a very safe sport in most cases. Detailed knowledge of safety equipment is crucial for safe climbing, however, and requires an attention to detail absent in many other sports.
These pages describe some of the safety equipment used in free climbing and two common techniques for using it. In one technique, top-roping, a rope from the top of the climb always holds the climber, making most slips harmless. In the other technique, lead climbing, the climber attaches the rope to the rock at points along the climb. This is not as safe, it allows more routes to be climbed.
These pages also describe how to get started in the sport. Finding a place to climb is easily done with one of the many available guidebooks. How to use equipment safely is best learned from an experienced climber, although some books are available.

The Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool Review
The Viper is my choice of ice climbing tools due to its balanced weight, curved shaft and smaller grip. The Viper excels at steep water ice and technical mixed rock and ice routes. The tool is fully modular, meaning it can be use with any Black diamond leash, converted to an hammer or an adze, and can be modified to be used leashless. Avalanche Education
Every year, many skiers and climbers sustain serious injuries or die in backcountry avalanches. Avalanches happen in every mountain range, in the backcountry and within the boundries of ski areas. The best way to avoid becoming a statistic is to educate yourself with an Avalanche Level 1 class. What is involved in Rock Climbing? Rock climbing can be done outside on rock or inside on artificial rock walls. Rock climbing outside typically involves climbing up predefined "routes". Some of the routes have clips "bolted" to the rock so the lead climber can easily "protect" himself from a long fall. Other routes require the lead climber to place odd-shaped items or camming devices in a secure way to hold a fall. This is referred to as traditional or "trad" climbing. Rock climbing requires a great deal of skill and technique. Strength is no substitute for technique but can assist in improving climbing ability. Sometimes the goal of the climber is to find an area to climb for the pure pleasure of climbing; at other times, the goal is to climb a peak where the route to the summit involves climbing rock pitches, what is referred to as alpine climbing.

Under the provisions of the Backcountry and Wilderness Management Plan, climbers may replace existing unsafe bolts, and new bolts may be placed in non-wilderness areas through a monitored process. You may obtain a checklist of bolting guidelines for non-wilderness areas at entrance stations and visitor centers or download a copy in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, available free from the Adobe website). You must obtain a special-use permit to use a power drill in non-wilderness. Bolting in wilderness is currently prohibited. A permit system is being developed for installing new bolts in wilderness with the goal of ensuring that the cumulative impacts of climbing in wilderness not exceed 1998 levels. Placing bolts in wilderness with power drills will not be allowed. Wilderness and Non-Wilderness Climbs

is your access to rock climbing locations in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Many of the climbing destinations mentioned in the Ouachita Mountains Rock Climbing Adventures page are well known and very popular Climbing destinations while others are recently discovered structures, or little known structures hidden away in the Ouachita Mountains. Many are easy to get to, while others provide an adventure in just getting to the location! In that some of these locations are recently discovered rocks, and have not been graded by experienced climbers, we suggest all climbers to have an experienced climber to assess the structure to assure proper safety. The Ouachita Mountains range of east-west ridges between the Arkansas and Red rivers, extending c.200 mi (320 km) from central Ark. into SE Okla. Magazine Mt. (c.2,800 ft/850 m high) is the tallest peak. The Ouachita Mts. are geologically considered outlier of the Appalachian Mts. They are composed of strongly folded and faulted sedimentary rocks. A whetstone industry is near Hot Springs, Ark. Mineral springs, lakes, and extensive wooded areas attract tourists. Several parts of the region have been set aside as public parks or forest reservations. Only climb with proper instruction and proper equipment. Enjoy our mountains, but leave them unblemished and without litter. Do not climb on private property without the expressed consent of the owner.
