Also by Tyler Mason: Related Stories: by Tyler Mason Monday, December 10, 2007 Neither of those fortunes changed for the Badgers over the weekend, however, as they lost 3-1 Friday and skated to a 1-1 tie Saturday. Coming into the weekend series, Wisconsin (7-7-2, 4-5-1 WCHA) was a team playing with confidence, having just swept St. Cloud State at home last weekend. The Mavericks (5-6-3, 3-6-3 WCHA) came in near the bottom of the conference standings, sitting ahead of just lowly Alaska-Anchorage. "I didn’t really get beat on it," Connelly said. "It was just a rebound and kind of a fluke one."

The road to Riga is rough, but if you're a backup amputee goalie who might enjoy some fun in Latvia's capital city, the American Amputee Hockey Association (AAHA) may have a spot for you at next year's International Standing Ice Hockey Federation (ISIHF) Championships.
Unless you are, or know, a hockey player born without an arm or a leg or who lost a limb in an accident you probably haven't heard of the AAHA's upcoming international competition or the organization's quest to participate in an official Paralympic sport.
International competitions are ambitious milestones on the AAHA road map, but if you believe life is more about the journey than the destination, here's a glimpse of the path one amputee has traveled.

So now I'm ready to roll, mentally and physically, for the Ultimate Hockey Road

Resiliency and determination were the buzz words as both come-from-behind victories were spearheaded by youthful underclassmen. On Friday night against No. 10 Princeton (4-4-2, 2-4-1 ECAC Hockey), the Red (5-4-1, 2-1-1) overcame a 3-0 deficit midway through the second period, rallying to capture a 7-4 victory over the Tigers.

UW unable to maintain momentum against Minnesota State.
By: Jacob Ela /The Daily Cardinal Freshman forward Kyle Turris scored a goal for the second straight weekend, yet UW lost and tied against last-place Minnesota State. Skating in their last series before a three week break, the Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey team picked up only one point this weekend against Minnesota State. The Badgers (4-5-1 WCHA , 7-7-2 overall) talked this week about using this series as a springboard to move up in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. But after a 3-1 loss Friday and a 1-1 tie Saturday, they failed to gain ground. In the opener, UW struck a positive note by scoring only a minute after the puck dropped. Freshman Kyle Turris scored his seventh goal of the year after a Mavericks turnover, with an assist from junior Ben Street. But Minnesota State tied the game only 10 seconds later, as junior Mike Berge beat junior Badgers goalie Shane Connelly (27 saves). Six minutes into the second period, the Mavericks broke the 1-1 tie just as a Wisconsin penalty kill was expiring. Sophomore Geoff Irwin scored to make it 2-1. Then, three minutes later, Minnesota State earned a true powerplay goal from freshman Rylan Galiardi, putting the Mavericks up 3-1.

The hockey dads hit the road
T he members of the Toronto Maple Leafs have their fathers on the road with them in Philadelphia, a nice move by the team that comes at a curious time given the importance of the remaining games.
Other NHL clubs, namely the Wild and Islanders, have had similar father/son road trips this season, and there are always some interesting stories that result. Take the bit about the ailing John Ferguson Sr., the father of the Leafs GM, who was himself the general manager (and briefly the coach) of the Winnipeg Jets when Thomas Steen, the father of current Leaf Alex Steen, played for the team.
Barry Belak lives in the small prairie town of North Battleford, Sask. , where he works as an agricultural investigator for the provincial government and has established himself as a mainstay in the local minor hockey system. (CBC recently named him one of the top hockey volunteers in the country.) He coached both of his sons, Wade and Graham (who is playing professionally in England after a brief sojourn through various North American leagues), "for as long as he could" — meaning he had to hand off those duties as the Belak boys rose to AAA and major junior hockey.

Women's hockey hits road to tangle with Buckeyes
    By Abby Langer
    Princetonian Contributor
Two steps forward. One step back. An age-old dilemma that frustrates coaches and players alike. And that backwards progression is head coach Jeff Kampersal's biggest concern as he and the women's ice hockey team (2-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 Ivy League) head for another long weekend against Ohio State (5-4-1) in Columbus.
Though the Tigers have a winning record thus far, a loss to Harvard last Saturday set them back emotionally. Rather than riding the high of an Ivy League success, Princeton will head to Ohio hoping to get at least one win.
"We will certainly have our hands more than full this weekend," Kampersal said. "Ohio will bring a team ready to play and ready to win."
Kampersal is still looking for the same cohesion on the team that he wanted at the beginning of the season; unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have quite found it. And rather than looking for one or two players on his extremely well-heeled team, in terms of man-to-man skills, the Tigers are going to have to look to the big picture if they are going to be successful over a mentally and physically tough Ohio State. "We're not looking at individual scorers right now. What we need to do most is look at making the most of every opportunity; everyone needs to do that for us to win this weekend," Kampersal said.

Both Friday's game and Saturday's rematch at Lawson Arena are slated to begin at 7:35 p.m. ET. Wayne State, which entered last weekend's home-and-home series with Bowling Green State on a three-game unbeaten streak, was swept by scores of 3-1 and 6-1, the former of which was at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Detroit. Western Michigan is coming off a pair of losses (4-0 and 3-2) in a home-and-home series against Ferris State.
