On behalf of the West Coast Classic tournament committee, thank you for making it such a success! Thanks to all the volunteers who, signed in teams, took around the 50/50, "manned" the raffle table, scorekeepers, time clock keepers, shot clock operators and anything else that had to be done. Our tournament director, Laura Takasaki, was responsible for getting our entire tournament organized and keeping the workers organized. Great Job Laura! A special thanks to all the out-of-town teams for making their way to Richmond. We hope you had a great time!

Ringette Team Wins Gold at Tournament
January 16, 2008 - Campus Bulletin The University's ringette team captured the gold at the University Challenge Cup tournament in Ottawa this month.
U of G was among 11 Canadian universities that competed in the ninth annual national competition hosted by Carleton University. There were two divisions, with Guelph winning the Tier 2 title and the University of Calgary capturing the Tier 1 title. Guelph's ringette team became an official club team in 2007 and has 15 members. "We just got together in September and had only played three or four games as a team before attending the tournament, so we are very proud to have done so well," said Shiona Glass, a U of G student who plays for the team. "We are looking forward to next year and hoping that our win will draw more ringette players to Guelph." The aim of the Challenge Cup is to provide an annual opportunity for university and college teams from across the country to meet and play each other and to also raise the visibility and profile of university ringette in Canada. Next year's tournament is scheduled to be held in Niagara Falls.

    What is Ladies’ Ringette?
After one leaves all the politics, headaches and intensity of a sport at the door, we are left with the pure love of the game. Ladies from the age of 23yrs and up—and UP-play on Masters teams (otherwise known as Ladies teams). There is a sense of teamwork and fun that exists –and a hope for most to just stay vertical on that ice a little longer! For Moms who watch their kids play and think “ Hey- I could do that”—well they can- and they are! For players who had played when they were younger-or all the way through—there is a division for them when they leave Debs or Intermediates- it’s Masters! To play opponents who are checking you fiercely, fighting for the ring intensely, and then after the game-sharing a pitcher of drinks and nachos with you with that same dedication —that is when it all comes together—a sport where everyone is playing for the love of it- and sharing the same passion…………That is what Ladies’ Ringette is all about.
