USA Gymnastics - Rhythmic Gymnastics
USA Gymnastics USA gymnastics is the sole national governing body for gymnastics in the U.S. The International Olympic Committee and International Gymnastics Federation have granted this privilege to USA Gymnastics. This organization oversees the development of gymnastics in the country and undertakes the training and selection of gymnasts for the Olympic gymnastics and the Gymnastics World Championships. USA Gymnastics was established in 1963 in Tucson, Arizona. Back then, the U.S. had a mere 7,000 athletes competing in a limited schedule. Today USA Gymnastics has more than 13, 000 professional instructors. Potential gymnasts are subject to a rigorous selection process before they are given a place in the Olympian team. These gymnasts come from various grassroots level organizations spread across the country. Rhythmic Gymnastics Rhythmic gymnastics Ernest Idla of Estonia developed a scoring method for rhythmic gymnastics and it soon became a competitive sport. Rhythmic gymnastics was introduced in 1906 in the U.S. but it was not so popular then. In 1962, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) recognized rhythmic gymnastics as a sport. The First Rhythmic World Championship was held in Budapest and attracted athletes from 10 countries. In the 1984 Olympics gymnastics competition in Los Angeles, the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-round competition was held for the first time.

    RHYTHMIC (RG)
    Description of Apparatus
Rhythmic Gymnasts compete on a floor area of 13 metres square, to musical accompaniment. Harmony between the gymnast, the apparatus and the music plus required difficulties are necessary to achieve a balanced composition.
The following apparatus are used in Rhythmic Gymnastics.
    Rope
The rope may be of hemp or any synthetic material. Its length is proportionate to the height of the gymnast. The technical figures may be made with the rope either taut or loose, with one or both hands, with or without change of hand. The relationship between the apparatus and the gymnast is more explosive than in the other cases. The rope often appears as a serpent like attacker seizing and winding around the gymnast, but suppleness and agility, tinged with elegance, always win out in the end.
    Ball
This is made of rubber or plastic. The ball is the only apparatus for which no grip is allowed. This means that amore sensuous relationship between the body and the apparatus is required. The ball moves in perfect harmony with the body. Spectacular throws with control and precision in the catches are dynamic elements.
    Clubs
These are made of wood or plastic. Sleight of hand! The gymnast uses the clubs to execute mills, rolls, twists, throws and as many asymmetric figures as possible, combining them with the many figures featured in non apparatus gymnastics. Exercises with the clubs require a highly developed sense of rhythm, maximum psychomotor coordination and precision up to watchmaking standards. The clubs are particularly suited to ambidextrous gymnasts.

Rhythmic gymnastics routines should last between 75 and 90 seconds and the gymnasts are penalized for every second they finish over or under the time allotment.
While mainstream or artistic gymnastics is performed on an apparatus like the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor, rhythmic gymnastics, a strictly female event, is performed with an apparatus. The five disciplines in rhythmic gymnastics, once called modern gymnastics, are rope, hoop, ball, ribbon, and clubs. The competitors use graceful balletic moves and manipulate the various apparatus in conjunction with their bodies and music on a 13-meter square floor area. At Athens, in the individual competition, the gymnasts will perform to music with the hoop, ball, clubs, or ribbon. In the group competition one routine with five ribbons and a routine with three hoops and two Balls will be performed.

Brief and Straightforward Guide What is rhythmic gymnastics?

What is Rhythmic Gymnastics?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that combines gymnastics and dance with the artistic and skillful use of hand-held apparatuses. The concept of rhythmic gymnastics has been around since the 1800s, but has developed into a full-fledged Olympic sport since conception. Officially recognized for the first time as modern gymnastics in 1961, it later became and remained known as rhythmic gymnastics. The first World Championship for the sport was held in 1963, but wasn’t added to the Olympic competitions until 1984 as an individual sport. In the 1996 Summer Olympics, a group competition category was added to rhythmic gymnastics. As of 2007, rhythmic gymnastics remains a sport primarily participated in by women, but some countries have developed a male-based interest in the sport. Whether performing as an individual or a group, gymnasts must employ the use of one or more hand-held apparatuses used in the sport. These include clubs, balls, hoops, ribbons, and rope. Competitors combine various elements of gymnastics and dance while simultaneously manipulating an apparatus. In rhythmic gymnastics, competitors are scored based on a twenty point scoring system. The scoring system has changed since its initial inception, which began as a ten point scoring system much like artistic gymnastics. Though the scoring system is always subject to change at the discretion of the F©d©ration Internationale de Gymnastique (
