Phone: 00359 2 55 01 42; Fax: 00359 2 55 30 63 In a survey of 100 girls, aged 11-15, having been trained actively in rhythmic gymnastics at least for a period of 5 years, we found a fivefold higher incidence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). These data were compared to the results from a screening of 4800 students of the same age, carried out in Sofia by the same examining team in 1996. A detailed familial and past diseases anamnesis was registered in all the probands. General physical and meticulous back examinations were carried out, and X-rays were taken in all the AIS suspected cases. Special attention was paid to the presence of generalised joint hyperlaxity, which had been usually the main criterion for the primary selection of 5-year-old-girls to start training in rhythmic gymnastics. Eating regimen, weight-height relations, growth and maturing development (delayed menarche or secondary amenorrhea) were assessed too. Intensity, duration and specific moments of the training process were carefully analysed, and a significant asymmetric loading and an extreme physical overloading of the body were found.

A decade of excellence in sport and art! The Okanagan Rhythmic Gymnastics Club was founded by
Canadian Olympian Camille Martens in fall of 1997. Currently girls ages 5 and up are taking part in a variety of programs, training from 1 to 20+ hours/week. All athletes are trained in diverse and challenging, yet thoroughly enjoyable programs. Training regimens include class work in dance, conditioning, flexibility, coordination, drama, video analysis, music interpretation, expression, sport psychology, personal organization, and nutrition.
Since it’s inception Okanagan Rhythmics has had the opportunity of working with an elite international coaching staff. 1996 Olympian Birgit Schielin of Austria provided exciting demonstrative example, Svetlana Rasseko from the Republic of Belarus shared extensive expertise in technique and program structure, Vlodya Makarov from the Ukraine provided the ballet and character base that is essential to good results, Linda Wei from China brought more international flare and specialized in classical ballet, Rachel Martens added dramatic flare and correct posture and alignment and Head Coach/Club Owner Camille Martens has inspired, encouraged, coached, choreographed and directed.

Rhythmic Gymnastics
Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport combining dance and gymnastics with the use of apparatus such as balls, hoops, ribbons, ropes, and clubs. The name of the sport was recently changed from "rhythmic sportive gymnastics" (RSG) to "rhythmic gymnastics" (RG).
How did it start?
Rhythmic gymnastics began in Scandinavia during the 19th century when two schools of thought about gymnastics collided, resulting in this sport. Originally developed to provide an overall physical fitness program for girls and women of all ages, Rhythmic Gymnastics evolved mostly during the 1950's. The sport was first recognized by the FIG (international gymnastics sport governing body) in 1962, and the first World Championships were held in 1963 in Budapest, Hungary.
