How Long Will it Take to Acclimatize to a Recumbent Bicycle?
Recumbent bicycle riders use many different muscle groups in different ways than an upright bicycle rider. You cannot just jump on a recumbent and expect a complete cross-training transition from your upright bike. Like any new exercise you must break yourself in slowly. In many ways, learning to ride a recumbent is like learning to ride a bike all over again, although a lot more fun. Do not expect yourself to begin passing cars in the first month of recumbent cycling. Take it easy, smell the flowers and work yourself up to speed in a reasonable amount of time. Recumbents encourage easy-going cycling so that should not be too difficult. Although some people adapt to recumbents almost instantly, most people are better served by a learning curve. Most people should take six months to two years of recumbent cycling to fully acclimatize themselves to the recumbent cycling position. It should be noted that the acclimatization period for short-wheelbase recumbents is usually longer because of the higher bottom-bracket. No special exercises or literature are required for teaching your body to ride a recumbent. All you have to do is get out and ride it. Most recumbent acclimatization will be straightforward physical training except for two things. One thing is “recumbent butt” and the other is sleeping feet. Both conditions involve only minor discomfort but you should be aware of them because anybody who rides a recumbent will develop much higher standards for comfort than riders of upright bikes. Recumbents are like five-star luxury hotels. They both encourage nitpicking.

Differences in pedal forces during recumbent cycling in adolescents with and without cerebral palsy.
Full Abstract
BACKGROUND:
We showed that subjects with cerebral palsy had greater transverse and frontal plane hip and knee motion, increased duration of muscle activity, increased cocontraction, and decreased efficiency during recumbent cycling than subjects with typical development. However, it is also important to understand the forces exerted on the pedals. The purpose of this report was to compare pedal forces during cycling between adolescents with and without cerebral palsy.
METHODS:
Ten subjects (3 male, 7 female) with spastic diplegic or quadriplegic cerebral palsy (15.6 years, SD 1.8) and 10 subjects (3 male, 7 female) with typical development (14.9 years, SD 1.4) cycled on a stationary recumbent cycle at 30 and 60 revolutions per minute if able. Three-dimensional piezoelectric force transducers measured pedal forces. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVAs.
FINDINGS:
INTERPRETATION:
These findings compliment our earlier findings of altered joint kinematics and muscle activity indicating that subjects with cerebral palsy and typical development have different cycling strategies. Methods to increase the duration of the positive force may allow subjects with CP to cycle more successfully and cycle vigorously enough to reach a heart rate necessary for improving fitness.

So I bought my friends Vision VR44 Recumbent bike, and have been happily completing Centuries ever since. Why? The following list sums it up for me: (I grabbed the list below from some other site, I wish I had the link to give them credit, but I don't, sorry) Why a recumbent?
A RECUMBENT SEAT is more comfortable than the narrow styles of standard road bikes. OVERALL RIDING POSITION creates a comfortable, heads-up riding posture that lets you see the world around you without the neck and shoulder strain associated with conventional bikes. RECUMBENT HANDLEBARS are located above the main frame in a very natural position that takes the strain off your shoulders, wrists, and hands.

MY RECUMBENT STORY IN BRIEF
I transitioned from being an avid runner to being a passionate cyclist about 30 years ago. My wife bought me a traditional upright bike since I had Walter Mitty notions of becoming a triathlete. Due to my dislike of swimming, I never made it as a triathlete, but cycling soon overtook running in my affections. Although I never raced, for many years I participated in as many cycling events as my work schedule would allow. About six years ago I retired from my career as a management consultant. One of my first retirement projects was to organize a week long tour of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan with my then 32 year old son. Problem was that we didn't have touring bikes. My son had seen advertisements for recumbent bikes and he thought it would be a blast to do our tour on bents. We both bought Rans V2 long wheelbase bents and off we went. My conversion to bents had nothing to do with being uncomfortable on upright bikes, or getting older or any of that. I tried it because my athletic son wanted a different kind of adventure. And in the process I found a form of cycling that was enormously satisfying and challenging.

  • Cycling for Knee Rehabilitation
    Cycling for Knee Rehabilitation
by Karen Hambly BSc MCSP (Sports Scientist/Physiotherapist) Exercise bikes, static bikes, stationary cycles, bicycle ergometers - these are all names for the bicycles that you find in virtually every physiotherapy clinic, gym or health club across the world. Many knee rehabilitation protocols include cycling so why is this exercise modality so popular for knee rehabilitation? This article will give you an insight into the use of a cycle for knee rehabilitation. Firstly what we need to consider is that the broad goals of any knee rehabilitation programme are likely to be to -
    • increase or restore knee joint range of movement increase or restore knee joint stability increase or restore the strength of muscles around the knee decrease or eliminate pain prevent reoccurrence of the injury
In comparison with other exercises cycling is a relatively activity that can help to improve knee joint mobility and stability. Cycling is frequently used as a rehabilitation exercise modality after knee injury or surgery as well as part of the management of chronic degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. The bicycle has a number of features that make it a particularly good tool for knee rehabilitation:

I guess we should feel sad, but there is also reason to be optimistic. More info, faster, and the ability to interact with others in a timely fashion make this sea change bitter sweet.

What is a recumbent bicycle? A bicycle where you sit back in a full seat with your cycling into a strong headwind you become very aware of that fact!
    http://www.hpv.on.ca/recumb.htm
    Recumbent Bicycles
Lightning P-38 - a high performance recumbent What is a recumbent bicycle? A bicycle where you sit back in a full seat with your legs in a horizontal position. This puts the body in a position where there is less wind drag from the legs, but still maintains the optimal angle between back and legs as on a conventional bicycle, provides a more comfortable riding position with no weight on the wrists, and provides a natural view looking forward. The standard "diamond frame" bicycle design evolved over time from basically a "horse with wheels" (hence the seat is called a saddle) and the design is a result of that heritage. If you study where the energy goes in riding a bicycle you will find out that at speeds over 25 km/hour, 90% of your energy is used to overcome wind resistance, only 10% goes to bearing friction and rolling resistance. Cycling into a strong headwind you become very aware of that fact! To design a really efficient bicycle (i.e. one that goes fast with just moderate effort) the only way you can achieve it is to cut wind resistance. The only practical way to do that is to reduce what is known as frontal area (as car manufacturers do now). The almost vertical position of your body on a standard bicycle is not the best position you can be in for aerodynamic drag, hence racers bend over with their backs flat and arms tucked in to reduce wind resistance - this works, but it can be uncomfortable, squeezes the diaphragm making breathing less efficient, puts a lot of weight on your hands and wrists, and to see forwards requires craning your neck upward in an unnatural position.
