The Bicycle Book - Wit, Wisdom and Wanderings
book review
Reviewed by Denise Wrathall Satya House Publications, 2007, $14.95, 152 Pages This is a book for people who love cycling. And although I had a few suspicions at first, I must finally have become a real cyclist, because I enjoyed this book. The Bicycle Book: Wit, Wisdom and Wanderings is a compilation of contributions from the Bicycle Exchange website, edited by Jim Joyce. The book also includes contributions that have never appeared on the site. It is divided into three categories – you guessed it: Wit, Wisdom, and Wanderings. At first, the Wit section might remind you of those clich© golf books; you know, the ones that only golfers think are interesting and funny? Articles like the “Life is a Bike” series, and “Are You a Gearhead?” are okay, but you’ll really start to warm up to the book when you read the part about what dogs and cyclists have in common.
The Wisdom section is my favourite, mostly because of the sample of questions and answers from Andy the Mechanic’s bike repair column on the website. Andy’s contributions should almost be in the Wit section – they are entertaining and full of great information.

Was that FAT GUY?
I saw a fat guy cycling today. Then I saw another fat guy cycling. Funny thing was, neither was THE Fat Guy Cycling. Why is this? I believe the fastest way to get in shape to ride 100 miles is to actually RIDE your bicycle. This is known as sport specificity. For example, shopping does not get you in shape for riding. Riding gets you in shape for riding. Get out there and ride!

And now for something completely different...
How about a railbike?
More great pictures are here.
Please be very careful and make sure that the railroad line is really and truly abandoned before trying this.
Fat Guy Cycling does not advocate trespassing on railroad right-of-way and we cannot be responsible for any injuries sustained by railbiking. Our lawyers made us say that. Oh, yeah, that and "contents are extremely hot."

Railbike adventure, ho!
The railbike odyssey continues. I finally decided the test tracks at Wallace and L Streets in Bozeman were destroying my bike. Sure, the first couple of times it was important for me to take care of some necessary tweaking, but after repairing the thing time and time again I finally realized that I was dealing with the worst set of railroad tracks in the state of Montana.
So, onto bigger and better things. Was my bike ready? Who knows. It wasn't ready to take another beating at the test tracks, that's for sure. I had originally considered riding the abandoned line from Wilsall to Livingston, but after a bit of research I realized I'd have permission issues with some of the landowners along the rail line. I needed a place without such constrictions, preferably on National Forest or BLM land. I needed... Homestake Pass.
Here's where Montanans take a deep breath, look at me dubiously, and mutter, "Wow." Homestake Pass is the route I-90 takes over the Continental Divide to Butte, Montana. It's known for steepness and treachery.
The rails running alonside it, however, aren't steep at all. After all, it's rare that any railroad has more than a three percent grade, Homestake included. It takes a big, swooping northward turn before coming back toward the interstate, making the pass in double the distance. Plus, the rails were gorgeous compared to the test tracks: straight, gleaming, clean, and totally gap-free. If it weren't for the large sage and juniper bushes growing up between the rails, it might even be fun.

CYCLING ON ABANDONED RAILROADS
By Bob Mellin
Imagine gliding along on ribbons of steel, through breathtaking open space, enjoying the pristine air, the abundant wildlife, and the silence. Your ride is as smooth as glass and there's no traffic. Your hands are free to take pictures or en joy your lunch. Your path is never steep. Where there's a hill, you go around it or through a tun nel. Where there's a river, you go over a bridge. Breath deeply relax, enjoy . . .
No, you're not dreaming. You're RAILBIKING!
A hundred years ago, dozens of patents were granted for various contraptions which adapted a common bicycle to ride on railroads. The 1908 Sears catalog offered a railbike attachment for $5.45. But this unique form of cycling never caught on, largely because no one wanted to share the rails with the trains which were far more numerous and active in those days.
But over the years, times have changed and train traffic has diminished. Today over 80,000 miles of track lie abandoned throughout the United States, and another 2,000 miles of rails are abandoned everyyear. Cycling on rail roads no longer has to be ille gal or dangerous.
A new book called "RAILBIKE- Cycling On Abandoned Railroads," written by experienced railbiker Bob Mellin, provides an overview of the history, current status, and predicted future of cycling on the rails. Safety issues are discussed in detail and suggestions for exploring the vast network of abandoned rails are presented. A companion book entitled "RIGHT-OF-WAY - A Guide To Abandoned Railroads" is also available to guide in locating abandoned tracks. State-by-state maps identify abandoned rails and some of the history of the lines and the companies that operated them is included.
