Cardio Options: Race-Walking, Speedwalking, etc.
Whatever you call itRace walking or Power walking or Speed walkingit's a smart cardio option. That is, if you do it really really fast, fast enough to get your heart-rate in its target zone. It's an especially good idea for those like Crabby who have shredded their knees through years of running. You can get pretty much all the benefits of running, with a lot less wear and tear on the body. (Here's one random article from some hard-core weightlifting guy with some of the benefitsCrabby was feeling too lazy to find a more authoritative source, but you can trust her that it's good for you).
However, despite tons of magazine articles saying for years that Power Walking is the next big thing, hardly anyone seems to actually do it. At least not in Crabby's neighborhood. Outdoor exercisers tend to be either runners or walky-walkers, not race walkers.
What's the reason for the puzzling absence of speed walkers? Simple: it's impossible to do it without looking like a total dork. Crabby knows this because she does it herself. The frantic arm-swinging, the ludicrous hip swivel, the prissy eyes-straight-ahead posture: one can't help but think "doesn't she know she looks like an assh*le?" Yes, she does.

Race walking:
From Wikipedia
Racewalking is a distance event in the sport of Athletics. It is distinguished from running by the biomechanics of movement. Racewalkers achieve speed by pushing the leg forward with the hamstring and gluteus as the dominant muscles.
Runners achieve speed by lifting the leg from the ground with the quadricep. Racewalkers aim to keep their bodies low to the ground, with shoulders steady and arms pumping through the hip. Speed is influenced by the strength of the arms and rapidity of leg movement.
At maximum efficiency a racewalker will seem to skim over the ground. As a racewalker tires and loses technique, movement becomes jerky and the athlete may begin to "lift". This is not desirable for maximum efficiency.

Race Walking Tips
Race Walkers Need Strong Arms, Too
Race walking involves the repetition of a very specific motion over a long period of time, longer than many running events. Race walkers who make the effort to strengthen their arms will find that their arm movements are more efficient, and they can rely on their arms to help propel them forward in the latter stages of a race when they get tired and need more energy. To build arm strength, try this: hold a 5-pound weight in each hand and pump your arms up and down. Swing your arm through a full range of motion so your hands brush past your hips. Pump your arms for about one minute, rest, and repeat. Try to do this exercise 2-3 times per week. Save Tip Comments Tip Rating

Membership Form Vancouver Racewalk Results BC Athletics and National Racewalk Championships Walk Right In Maintain Continuous Contact And Watch Those Knees The members of Racewalk West invite you to come in and enjoy our site. We have a wide variety of skills and talents and we're more than willing to share them with you.
The title of this page describes the two basic rules of Racewalking. The rules were put in place to assure that all competitors would proceed by means of a "fair" walk.
There must be continuous contact with the ground, no "flight" phase as you see in running. The walker must also maintain a straight leg from the time the foot touches the ground until the hip passes over the foot, this gives us our characteristic wiggle.
And there you have it. That's all the rules you need to know, the rest is technique, strength and endurance.
What are you waiting for, give it a try!
