Shercock was represented by seasoned walkers Peter Muldoon Paul Fitzpatrick and Bernadette Muldoon in the older age groups and by four first-time walkers in the younger juvenile events. Peter came off his winter conditioning programme only recently and was looking forward to his first race of the new season. Working of a negative splits approach, he completed the first 5km of the junior 10km race just outside his 24 minute target in 24:11 in the company of junior international Ann Loughnane (left) Bernie Muldoon pushes for home at the end of her u17 3km race. Wednesday, November 21, 2007 Racewalking for Science As part of the shortness of breath ( dyspnea) research project that I'm involved in over at UCSF, every 3 months I have to go into the lab where they check my pulmonary functions and then have me do a series of physical fitness type tests. Sometimes they have me get on the treadmill and basically walk till I puke. Other times they 'll test me to see how many arm raises I can do in one minute and that sort of thing. One of the tests that I have to do during every follow up visit, is called the "6 minute walking test" . (Kinda weird they would have me do this if you consider , that on a good breathing day, I can walk 9 hours non-stop) .

No, not many states include it as a high school track and field event. Peters walked to first place at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland on Saturday, March 11, beating a field of 21 other athletes. She set her personal record to finish the one-mile race in 7:25.71. The following day in New York City, out of a field of 30 girls, Tina took the title in the National Scholastic Indoor Championship one-mile race in 7:36.13. She entered the races knowing she had a good chance of winning this year because in 2005 she won her first national title at the Nike nationals and finished second to a senior at the National Scholastic Championship. Cricket, croquet and the once beloved "equestrian high jump" were evicted after the 1900 Games. The "plain high dive," which allowed no twists or somersaults, used to be an Olympic sport. So was live pigeon shooting. Now they won't even release live pigeons as part of the Opening Ceremonies, fearful of traumatizing the little beasts. Racewalking: A Great Workout With 1/3 the Impact One of the beauties of racewalking is that it provides a great cardio workout, comparable to running, but with a smooth, fluid motion that imparts only about 1/3 the impact of running. Of course, some runners can continue on into their '80s with never a problem but there are others who find that their joints suffer from the pounding on streets and trails. For them, racewalking can be a great alternative. But racewalking is different from running in that it is something that you have to learn how to do. Some people pick it up more quickly than others. If you have other racewalkers around whom you can mimic and who will give you pointers, that is a great help. It is also very beneficial, in the early stages, to have someone video your racewalking so you can see what you are doing and make corrections. But once someone does learn the racewalking technique and begins to pick up smoothness, speed and endurance, it is wonderfully fun, satisfying and, for many, highly addictive!
