Racewalking is a long-distance event in the sport of athletics. Although the idea is to get from point 'A' to point 'B' as quickly as possible on two legs, racewalking is biomechanically quite different from running . According to the rules (below) one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Stride length is reduced, so to achieve competitive speeds, racewalkers must attain cadence rates comparable to those achieved by Olympic 400-meter runners–and they must do so for hours at a time since the Olympic distances are 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and 50 kilometers (31 miles.)

edit Rules
There are two rules that govern racewalking. The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as 'lifting.' The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes over it. These rules are judged by the human eye, which creates controversy at today's high speeds. Athletes may sometimes 'lift' for a few milliseconds per stride which can be caught on high-speed film, but such a short flight phase' is undetectable to the human eye.

RACEWALKING
Do you feel the need for speed Racewalking may be your answer. Although racewalking is a technique that can be used at any walking speed it is generally used by walkers to increase their speed and endurance. Plus the racewalking technique provides a great aerobic workout and burns more calories per mile than fitness walking or running.
Racewalking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs.
This is what differentiates racewalking from running. It means that there is a moment when the heel of the front foot and the toe of the rear foot appear to be in contact with the ground at the same time. Before the racewalker takes the rear foot off the ground, their front heel must make contact with the ground. Contact with the ground appears (to the human eye) to be maintained at all times.
The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical position.
This differentiates racewalking from other forms of walking. It does not mean that your legs are straight at all times. The rule is that the knee should be straight when the heel strikes the ground. It must remain straight until it passes under the body. Then the knee bends and swings forward taking the next step.

Race walking differs from running in that it requires the competitor to maintain contact with the ground and straighten their front knee when the foot makes contact with the ground, keeping it straightened until the knee passes under the body. Judges evaluate the technique of race walkers and report fouls which may lead to disqualification. All judging is done by the eye of the judge and no outside technology is used in making judging decisions.

It is impossible to fully appreciate the sport of racewalking unless you have some understanding of its history. The following overview is based largely on a doctoral dissertation completed in 1989 by the late William Gordon Wallace.
      The English Heritage
"Competitive walking of man against man appeared sometime late in the 16th century or early in the 17th. It became the custom in that period for members of the English aristocracy to employ footmen to accompany them during their travels across country by coach. These were in effect servants whose duties included the carrying of messages and documents, hastening ahead of the family coach to make arrangements at inns for an evening's food, drink, and sleep, or advising the country house staff of the imminence of the family's arrival". "Heavy wagering being a part of the excesses practiced by the nobility at that time, it was inevitable that masters began to match their footmen against one another in races. With sizeable sums at stake these noblemen increasingly sought footmen who could demonstrate speed and stamina. They were then trained as gladiators to compete in matches arranged over varying distances. Thus it was that a class of professional pedestrians evolved on the British scene".
