Thursday, January 10, 2008 Rob Conway is following the mantra of his former World Wrestling Entertainment character. He really is doing it the Con-Way. In this case, that means not rushing back into a full-time grappling schedule after being released last May from his WWE contract. Conway deserves a break. He spent four years on WWE's main roster, wrestling in 11 countries and every U.S. state except Montana. Conway also worked sporadically as "enhancement talent" on WWE telecasts from 2000 to 2003 while honing his skills in the promotion's Ohio Valley Wrestling developmental territory. "I've gotten to recharge my batteries," Conway said last week in a telephone interview. "That's why I haven't tried going back there or to TNA (Wrestling). I'm still not ready to wrestle four or five times a week."

The Biography of George "The Animal" Steele
Burt Ruby, the wrestling promoter in Michigan during the 50's, 60's and 70's, was the mentor of George The Animal Steele. Burt was the mentor of many super stars including The Sheik, Killer Kowalski, Bobo Brazil, Abdula The Butcher, Leaping Larry Chene, Ricky The Crusher Cortez and Igor.
George started his wrestling career in 1962 wearing a mask and wrestling as The Student. The Student started his career being managed by Gary Hart. Overnight, The Student became a main event star in Burt’s local promotions. As The Student, (George) had the opportunity to learn his trade while wrestling with many of the top talents of the time, under the watchful eye of Burt Ruby. The Sheik came back to the Detroit area to wrestle in 1965. This gave The Student a chance to watch and learn from one of the greatest wild brawling super stars of all time.
Bruno Sammartino, the WWF champion, and his entourage came to Detroit’s Cobo Hall for a big match with Bulldog Brower. The Student was spotted by Bruno’s entourage that night in Cobo Hall and was shortly invited to wrestle in Pittsburgh. They did not want a masked man in Pittsburgh so The Student became George Steele. George was in a couple of tag matches with the great Dr. Bill Miller. Steele and Miller tagged up against Bruno Sammartino and the Batman in main events. Soon it was George Steele vs. Bruno Sammartino for the WWF title. The Pittsburgh Civic Arena was rocking with packed crowds that just could not get enough of the wild brawls that Steele and Bruno were having.

February 15, 2007 Professional wrestling – or sports entertainment as it has recently been called – has been a part of American culture since the late 19th century. Many of the traveling carnivals would have wrestlers challenge members of the audience to a match, which the audience member would win. He, of course, was a plant. As was the next "contestant." They would do this a few times to get the real patrons – or "marks" – worked up into a frenzy so they would put down serious money to watch the next match. This time, the contestant would be an actual member of the audience, and the wrestler would crush him and the carnival made some more money for its coffers. It was part of the "carny" life, and could be relatively profitable to the performers. After a few days in Podunk, USA, they'd move on to Smalltown, USA and use the same ruse. As long as they kept moving, not many caught on.

Benedict Arnold Despite having dispatched each of their opponents, the tag team of George Washington and Benedict Arnold is not a harmonious entity. Arnold feels that Washington is gaining too much individual credit for the tag team's success. Before that night's match, hidden cameras catch Arnold shaking hands with their opponent, King George. When Washington gets in trouble during the match, he goes to tag in Arnold, but instead Arnold slaps him in the face. The match degenerates into a three-on-one until Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys race to the ring to save Washington.
Mexican-American War A supremely popular and confident James K. Polk comes to the ring and says he has achieved everything he wanted except winning a title belt from the utterly deplorable Santa Anna. At this incitement, Santa Anna walks out showered by boos. Santa Anna says that Polk can't have the belt, that it belongs to him and he refuses to relinquish it. Polk asks Santa Anna, "Whatcha gonna do when the United States of America runs wild over you!" At that point, Polk's cronies, Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, ambush Santa Anna. With Santa Anna sufficiently debilitated, Polk delivers the final blow and takes what he believes rightfully belongs to him.

Expert: Matthew Moyles is a teacher and coach in the Minisink Valley Central School District. He began wrestling in the seventh grade. From the moment he stepped out onto the practice mat, he knew he had found a sport he truly loved and respected. He wrestled all throughout junior and senior high school, but was forced to give up competition due to a medical condition. His reluctance to give up on competitive wrestling shed light on a new area of wrestling that he never considered before: coaching. After he graduated, he volunteered to help out at his local high school wherever he could. Four years of volunteering allowed him to take a step back and examine the sport and fine-tune his coaching techniques. He is currently one of the two modified coaches in the Minisink Valley district, and he loves coaching almost as much as wrestling. Series Summary : “He’s on the top rope; he’s gonna jump…oh, did you see that? He just did a flying hammer, right into that guy’s face. Oooh, that’s gotta hurt!” Some people are acquainted with a brand of wrestling that involves a lot of acrobatics and carefully timed maneuvers—as well as gaudy costumes, stage makeup, and a lot of threatening gestures. Yet before pro-wrestling organizations like the WWE, WWF, WCW and others came to the forefront, wrestling was, and continues to be, an Olympic sport, perhaps created by the Greeks...or perhaps it is the oldest sport known to man.

From coast-to-coast, not only have Canadian fans supported some of the most successful promotions in the business, many Canadians have also become some of the biggest names to step into the ring. One American wrestling magazine in the early 1970s listed the 50 top wrestlers of the time and over a quarter of them were Canadians.
