2007 In Review
Submitted by jon on January 22, 2008 - 11:01am. Thank you for making 2007 a great year for Powerlifting Watch. We launched the first-ever Lifter Rankings (subs req) which are broken out by gear type. These top 50 Rankings are also broken out by weight class and gender. I believe these to be the most accurate and useful Rankings available in the sport. 18 comments read more quote

A powerlifting competition takes place as follows: Each competitor is allowed three to four attempts on each lift depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in. The lifter’s best valid attempt on each lift counts toward his competition total. If two or more lifters achieve the same total, the lighter lifter ranks above the heavier lifter. Competitors are judged against other lifters of the same gender, weight class , and age. This helps to ensure that the accomplishments of lifters like Lamar Gant , who deadlifted five times his own weight, are recognized alongside those of Andy Bolton , the current World Powerlifting Organization squat, deadlift, and three-lift world record holder. Comparisons of lifters and scores across different weight classes can also be made using

Been fighting strep throat here in the family, so this night was a decent showing with all things considered. I still took it a bit easy as I dont totally have my confidence back and am having some scheduling problems as far as my workouts are concerned...
I figure after a few Dynamic Effort workouts in, my endurance and work capacity will be back up, so I look forward to that. One saving grace is 505 doesnt feel heavy on the back, the speed and form need some work though, but thats no surprise...
Deadlifts were fast and strong, I concentrated on my form a bit. I swear I set up differently for each pull. I figure if I get this sorted out then when I start pulling heavy again, I ought to be back in the game. I guess I am fortunate to have pulled 570 with crap form, cant imagine what will happen once I tweak this mother....
Thats all for now, gonna watch the Patriots whoop up on the Chargers enroute to the Superbowl (Knock on Wood)....
Keep it Dark, Keep it Heavy...

How Powerlifting Made Me a Better Libertarian
by Myles Kantor
by Myles Kantor

Libertarianism is a very physical worldview. A recurrent and basic theme in libertarian writing is the human body. For instance:
  • "Let us…concentrate on the question of a man’s ownership rights to his own body. Here there are two alternatives: either we may lay down a rule that each man should be permitted (i.e., have the right to) the full ownership of his own body, or we may rule that he may not have such complete ownership." ( Murray Rothbard "State laws, regulations, and actions are objectionable just because the state is claiming the right to control how someone's body is to be used." ( N. Stephan Kinsella "…the principle of self-ownership stands at the basis of libertarian thought. Each person is the owner of his or her own body." ( David Gordon
Individuals exercise self-ownership through a variety of physical choices such as a man choosing to wear a beard or not. For the despotic alternative, consider the prohibition of beards by Albania’s Enver Hoxha and, more recently

Strong Man Origins
In the late 19th century, when weightlifting was just beginning to develop as a sport, there was a wide range of lifts. Many of them were novelties performed by the professional strong men who performed with circuses in Europe, in music halls in Great Britain, and on the vaudeville circuit in America. Other lifts were used primarily for training, but were sometimes included in competitions. Among them were the dead lift, the supine or back press, the deep knee bend, the belly toss, the wrestler's bridge, the barbell curl, the one-arm swing, the upright row, the bent press, and the behind the neck press. At the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, there was an all-around dumbbell event in which competitors had to perform nine one-arm lifts, a single two-arm lift, and an optional lift. When the British Amateur Weight Lifting Association was founded in 1911, it listed 42 official lifts for which it would approve records. During the 1920s, there were two national weightlifting organizations in the United States, the American Continental Weight-Lifter's Association (ACWLA) and the Association Of Bar Bell Men (ABBM). They both recognized records for a wide variety of lifts, although some of them were relegated to exhibitions, not competitive events.
