Pole Vault Deaths Spur Safety Concerns
A recent rash of pole vaulter deathsthree within 2 monthshas highlighted the dangers of the event and has raised new questions about what can be done to make it safer. Barry P. Boden, MD, lead author of a 2001 study on catastrophic pole vaulting injuries, says that though extremely tragic, the deaths fit patterns identified in the study. "Based on our data, there's usually one death per year," says Boden, an orthopedic surgeon at The Orthopaedic Center in Rockville, Maryland, and an editorial board member of THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE. "This is on the high side, but not out of the ordinary," he says. Tracking the number of pole vaulters is difficult, Boden says, so it's not known if the rash of injuries is coincidental or related to increased participation. However, numbers are thought to be increasing, based on the popularity of extreme sports and the influx of women into pole vaulting. Women now compete in high school and college, and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney marked the first-ever Olympic women's pole vault competition. An American, Stacy Dragila, won the gold medal in the event.

NCAA TRACK AND FIELD COMMITTEE ENHANCES POLE VAULT RULES
INDIANAPOLIS-The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has proposed several rules changes intended to reduce the risk of injury in the pole vault event. Sound safety standards already have been in place, but the committee reviewed pole vault because of concerns raised after several injuries and deaths in the sport in recent months. At its annual meeting in Indianapolis that concluded June 19, the committee voted to increase the minimum pole-vault landing pad measurement beyond the vault box to 6 meters wide by 5 meters deep (19 feet, 8 inches by 16 feet, 5 inches). The minimum has been 4.88 meters by 3.66 meters (16 feet by 12 feet). "Many NCAA institutions already have landing pads that far exceeded the previous minimum and already meet the new dimensions," said committee chair Diane Howell, associate athletics director at the University of Houston. The committee also voted to make the front portion of the landing pad the same width as the back portion. That standard is 6 meters (19 feet, 8 inches), and it must extend a minimum of 1.83 meters (6 feet) forward (toward the runway) from the back edge of the vaulting box. If the front landing pad does not extend to the area immediately around the vaulting box, a padded collar of 2 to 4 inches of uniform thickness must cover the area behind and to the sides of the vaulting box that is not protected by the landing pad. The collar padding must not affect the bend of the pole.

Manson owns magical pole-vault mark
Former Jayhawk has cleared 18 feet for 20 consecutive years By Gary Bedore , Assistant Sports Editor Saturday, April 23, 2005 Like baseball Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio and Cal Ripken, track standout Pat Manson owns a record that may never be broken. advertisement "What Pat has done ... there's simply nothing to compare it to," said Tim Weaver, meet director of the Kansas Relays, of former KU pole vaulter Manson clearing the world-class height of 18 feet for an unheard-of 20 consecutive years. "What Cal Ripken accomplished (playing in 2,632 consecutive games) was certainly on a national scale more impressive," Weaver said. "But as far as longevity ... to vault at a world-class level, go over a bar 18, 19 feet in the air for 20 years, is a little insane, but also amazingly impressive." More impressive than Ripken's streak or DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak? Manson is too humble for that argument.

Central raises the bar in pole vault
Trojans have been above the rest in event for years
By Record-Eagle staff writer Record-Eagle/Douglas Tesner Nathan Breithaupt leads this year's version of TC Central's vaunted pole vaulters. TRAVERSE CITY - There's a reason that the pole is 13-14 feet long. Otherwise it would be hard to pass the Traverse City Central pole vaulting baton. It started with Joe Neihardt in 1962, the first TC Central pole vaulter to clear 13 feet. The current pole vault leader is senior Nathan Breithaupt, who cleared 14'1" last season. "That's a long period of time, jumping real high," Central coach John Lober. Neihardt would go on to coach the Central track team. Lober was an assistant with the Trojans under Neihardt from 1970-76 before taking over the program in 1977.

By Mike Cane
Herald Writer
PASCO - Nearly 20 minutes after pulling off an unfathomable achievement, Laura Bulander still quivered with excitement. "I didn't have any expectations at all," said Bulander, a senior exchange student at Snohomish High School. Bulander, who came to Snohomish from her home in Solothurn, Switzerland, surpassed her previous career best by a foot to place a surprising third in the Class 4A girls pole vault Saturday during Star Track XXIII, the 3A/4A Track and Field State Championship meets at Edgar Brown Stadium. This is the first year of vaulting for Bulander, who entered the state meet seeded 11th with a personal record of 9 feet, 6 inches. Her best effort Saturday was 10-6. "When I cleared 10 (feet)," she said, "I was so happy. ... Now I'm shaking." Bulander's Snohomish teammates, seated high above the track under the Snohomish tent, erupted in cheers as the Swiss Miss soared higher and higher.
