Pole Vault Overview This page concentrates on Safety and a basic understanding of the Pole Vault. General Overview: The pole vault (PV) is an event in track and field where athletes compete to clear the highest possible crossbar by using a vaulting pole. The basic concept is to convert horizontal energy (the run) into vertical energy (thus clearing a higher bar). Pole Vault Pits
  • Ensure the landing pad meets the minimum specifications in size and capability (to sufficiently cushion the landing). If you are unsure of the minimum specifications, check your State (High-School), NCAA (Collegiate), or IAAF rulebook. Keep the pits covered and/or inside when not using. If you cover your pits outside, put your pits on tires or wood palattes to avoid water damage to the underside of the pits. Always strap and tie pits to manufacturers specifications, and check them before each use. Seasonally check your pits (especially the cover pit) for tears or rips and have an awning or upholstery shop repair as necessary. Pits are expensive ($5,000 - $10,000) and this is an easy way to prolong their life. Ensure the pits are the proper distance from the back of the box. While National High School regulations permit 14" of space between the back of the box and the pits we recommend pushing the pits as close to the box as possible without having the pole bend into the pit (which would stop the poles forward motion and cause the vaulter to stall).

    Bednarz and McGeever Top 13'3
Brian McGeever, in his first meet this season showed that he's better than when he last competed more than six months ago, as he cleared a personal best 13 feet and 3 inches. That ties him with teammate Jon Bednarz who also cleared a personal best 13'3 for second highest jumping the league this season. Bednarz is now just six inches off the sophomore school record set in 2001 by Gavin McMahon '03. Darren Traynor, after clearing 11'9 had three good attempts at 12'3. Junior John Antrim-Cashin cleared a personal best 11'3, while soph Chris Corsillo also PR'd at 9'9.(Note Corsillo only cleared 7'0 once all last year as a Frosh). Two frosh also joined in the PR parade as Conor Prunty and Joshua Lopez-Travetello cleared 8'9.

CLEARS THE SECOND HIGHEST HEIGHT FOR A SOPH IN PREP HISTORY
It seems persistence pays off as Jonathan Bednarz pushes through this midseason with a 12’10 clearance this past Saturday at the Armory after months of struggling to get beyond 11’6 . After his 3 rd attempt at 12’4, nobody thought that his narrow clearance could get him any higher. They were proved right through his first two attempts at 12’10, but to everyone’s surprise on the 3rd attempt he leapt up and soared over the bar. Along with this was Darren Traynor's clearance of 11'10, a 4 inch PR, moving him ever closer to medal contention come championship time. Soph Michael Ulanski also had a good day and vaulted over 11-4 (Note: Mike jumped 8'6 at this meet last year).

October 28, 2003 Having coached pole vault in Lethbridge since the spring of 1995 (9 years).
I find that I lack the motivation to continue. Though I feel much obligation to the athletes who have worked so hard over the years, I feel to continue without the passion I have felt in the past would be unfair to everyone concerned. This decision has been debated in my thoughts many, many times over the past few months. I will attempt to explain why my passion for this sport has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer continue. 1. I am selfish and want my time to myself again. I want to spend my time on other things. 2. I am no longer convinced that the pursuit of excellence in pole vaulting is a worthwhile endeavor. Though it does teach many qualities that spill over into other facets of daily life and the fitness aspect is a plus to all involved. The rewards for reaching a national or international level are only greater problems of training and travel support. Coaching young athletes to reach their full potential means that some of them are going to reach these levels and the same problems of funding for national and international travel and higher quality training will come up again and again. I cannot lead young ones into this dead end with a clear conscience. 3. Volunteer coaches are used and abused in Canada. Volunteer coaches are expected to coach and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Volunteer coaches are out of necessity coaches, trainers, chauffeurs, administrators, fundraisers, psychologists, maintenance personnel, logistics experts, statisticians…etc. Volunteer coaches use their vacation time to spend time with and for their athletes. It is too much. This is not going to change.

This is an exhilarating event to watch
It's all about clearing a crossbar with the use of a pole with speed and a smooth technique the key to success. You power down the runway and plant a pole into the special box at the front of the landing pad and hopefully get over the bar without knocking it to the ground. Stacy Dragila (USA) Born 25.3.71
Russian Yelena Isinbayeva is the current superstar, but it wasn't so long ago when Dragila was the vaulting queen. The American originally ran the hurdles but after a stint at training for the heptathlon, she was encouraged to try the pole vault and dominated for several years. As well as her Olympic crown in 2000, she has won almost every major championship, including the 1997 indoor Worlds in Paris and the 1999 outdoor Worlds in Seville. Sergey Bubka (UKR) Born 4.12.63

    Pole Vault
The pole vault is the most technical of athletic events, therefore a considerable amount of time should be spent on understanding and perfecting the technique. The vault can be broken up into different sections, which can be worked on individually. All instructions refer to a right handed athlete. adsenset(1)
    Pole selection
The appropriate pole to use is determined by your weight. Never use a pole rated below your body weight.
    The Grip
A grip area from 6" to 18" (inches) from the top of the pole is the range the pole is made to bend and respond efficiently. Pole manufacturers place a red band around the top of the pole to indicate the top of the recommended grip range. All fiberglass poles have a specific "soft side" which runs the length of the pole and you must identify the specific "soft side" either by using the manufacturer's identification point or by visually sighting down the pole. When vaulting, the "soft side" must face away from you in the direction of the initial bending of the pole. Holding the pole parallel to the ground, "soft side" facing away from you, grasp the pole with the left hand palm down and the right hand palm upwards. Right hand should be approximately 12" from the top of the pole and the hands should be approximately shoulder width apart.

Physics of the Pole Vault by Kimo Morris I PE = mgx where m is mass (calculated from weight), g is the acceleration of gravity, and x is the height off the ground. Again, from your physics book, you can also get the equation for calculation Kinetic Energy: KE = 1/2 mv where m is mass, and v is velocity (which is the same as speed in our equation). Since we've made the assumption that all the kinetic energy will equal the potential energy, you can just make the equations equal to each other like this: mgx = 1/2 mv If you solve for x (height), you get x = (1/2 v )/g T his solution says a lot! First, notice that mass no longer appears in the equation. In fact, there are only two things left in the equation - speed and gravity. Obviously, gravity is constant. Thus, your absolute height will be determined by how fast you run! Now, let's come back down to reality. There is a lot more to pole vaulting than just running fast. One must work on proper technique throughout the entirety of the vault. The better your technique, the less energy you will lose throughout the vault. But, a generality can be made here. Assuming it were possible for two vaulters to have the exact same technical skills, the one that jumps the highest is the one that can run the fastest. So, let's get back to our equation. Suppose you can run a 100m race in 12 seconds. Your speed (velocity) would therefore be 100m/12s = 8.33 m/s. Gravity is 9.8 m/s

November 20, 2003 * 8-10 am * Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina * Tampa, FL Present: Bob Anderson, Earl Bell, Bill Brine, Roy Burek, Rick Burke, Steve Chappell, Tim Curley, Ed Dare, Eric Darnell, Scott Deitch, Ruben Echemendia, Dean Fisher (co-chair), David Halstead, Greg Henshaw, Eric Hostetler, Greg Hull, Jan Johnson, Ian Kovacevich, Peter McGinnis (co-chair), C.A. "Dewey" Morehouse, Dennis Piper, Daniel Pomerening, John Sabelli, Eddie Seese, Wilson SooHoo, Mark Strawderman, Chris Swanson, Randy Swart, Russ VerSteeg, Jeff Watry, Paul Wilson McGinnis opened the meeting at 8:05 am. Attendees introduced themselves. McGinnis then gave brief history of the proposed standard for specifications for helmets used in pole vaulting. The standard was balloted a second time during the summer of 2003 at the subcommittee level. This ballot resulted in three negative ballots (one by a non-member) as well as one comment accompanying an affirmative ballot. The purpose of the meeting was to address these negative votes and comments. NEGATIVE VOTES AND COMMENTS FROM JUNE 17 BALLOT: *W. Farrell (non-member) negative: "In Section 8.3.2 after the statement saying "For use in the sport of pole vaulting" add "and state the peak acceleration test results achieved" or similar wording so that consumers can compare helmet test results, not just whether the standard is met." Swart suggested that Farrell should be asked to withdraw his negative. If Farrell would not withdraw his negative, Eddie Seese moved and Dean Fisher seconded a motion to consider this a non-persuasive negative. Discussion: No other ASTM helmet standards included this specific labeling requirement. ASTM standards are pass-fail. There are more than one impact test - which acceleration result would be indicated on the label? Impact tests are not the only element of the standard. Motion passed unanimously. (Note: McGinnis spoke with Farrell after he arrived later in the day and Farrell indicated that he had withdrawn his negative.)

    1. Discussion : Is a pole vault headgear standard needed?
    • 4 state high school associations require helmet use by high school pole vaulters but do not specify type of helmet to use: Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
    • New York State legislature has proposed a law requiring all college and high school pole vaulters to wear helmets
    • implementation of rules requiring larger pole vault pits and padding of hard surfaces eliminates much of the head injury risks - but many head injuries in pole vaulting have occurred in non-compliant facilities (i.e., unpadded hard surfaces around the pit or unpadded standard bases)
    • expectations of helmet users will exceed capabilities of helmets - clear warning labels explaining the limitations of a helmet and the instructions for helmet use would need to be included as part of a standard
    • helmets should not be considered the only solution to the problem of reducing head injuries in pole vaulting, but one part of an overall plan to reduce injuries in pole vaulting

    Only the brave -
    - or the barmy -
    - or the brilliant!
    ...attempt the Pole Vault!
Actually it's not quite like that! The pole vault is a fun event but exacting requiring a range of physical skills including strength, speed, flexibility and gymnastic ability - and above all a fearless attitude and determination. We are very lucky in Wellington in being able to offer young athletes the chance to try this, the ultimate all-rounder's event.
    Who me?
To become a pole vaulter the main qualification is an interest in the event. The best vaulters are all-round athletes with a background either in sprints or jumps. The event is particularly well suited to gymnasts or ex-gymnasts.
    What is the Pole Vault?
Well I am sure you have seen it on TV - the aim is simply to jump over a bar set as high as possible. You are allowed to us a pole (of any length) to assist your passage to the upper realm.
