NCAA TRACK AND FIELD COMMITTEE ENHANCES POLE VAULT RULES
INDIANAPOLIS-The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has proposed several rules changes intended to reduce the risk of injury in the pole vault event. Sound safety standards already have been in place, but the committee reviewed pole vault because of concerns raised after several injuries and deaths in the sport in recent months. At its annual meeting in Indianapolis that concluded June 19, the committee voted to increase the minimum pole-vault landing pad measurement beyond the vault box to 6 meters wide by 5 meters deep (19 feet, 8 inches by 16 feet, 5 inches). The minimum has been 4.88 meters by 3.66 meters (16 feet by 12 feet). "Many NCAA institutions already have landing pads that far exceeded the previous minimum and already meet the new dimensions," said committee chair Diane Howell, associate athletics director at the University of Houston. The committee also voted to make the front portion of the landing pad the same width as the back portion. That standard is 6 meters (19 feet, 8 inches), and it must extend a minimum of 1.83 meters (6 feet) forward (toward the runway) from the back edge of the vaulting box. If the front landing pad does not extend to the area immediately around the vaulting box, a padded collar of 2 to 4 inches of uniform thickness must cover the area behind and to the sides of the vaulting box that is not protected by the landing pad. The collar padding must not affect the bend of the pole.

By MICHAEL WEINREB Published: February 2, 2007 Yelena Isinbayeva has heard many things about New York. She has heard that those who visit New York for the first time tend to fall in love with it. But on the ride from the airport to her hotel, she saw nothing of interest, none of the designer shops or gourmet restaurants she would like to visit, and certainly not the Statue of Liberty. REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Pole vault Pole vault is a an event in track and field competition in which athletes use a pole to propel their body over a crossbar set at a certain height. The equipment needed for pole-vaulting includes the pole, a crossbar, and two upright standards to support the crossbar. The pole can be made of any material. However, all good vaulters use poles made of fiberglass. The pole is from 12 to 171/2 feet (3.7 to 5.3 meters) in length. The fundamentals of pole-vaulting include (1) the grip, (2) the run, (3) the plant and take-off, (4) the swing, (5) the pull-up, and (6) clearing the bar.

Dec. 8, 2007 Results
Manhattan Kan. - Sophomore Jordan Scott set a new meet record in the men's pole vault as three Jayhawks won their respective events in their season debuts for the University of Kansas men's and women's track and field teams at the KSU All-Comers meet in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday afternoon. Scott won the pole vault with a KSU All-Comers meet record vault of 5.24 meters (17-02.25 feet). Scott broke the record in which he set last year by a half an inch (17-01.75 feet). Senior Julius Jiles won the 60-meter dash for the men in a time of 7.96 while sophomore Lauren Bonds won the women's 3,000-meter run as the first of three consecutive Jayhawks to cross the finish line. Bonds completed the event in 10:13.89 with senior Hayley Harbert finishing in 2 nd place in a time of 10:21.15 and sophomore

Hurdler garners regional qualifying mark in first home meet of season
Even with eight stitches in his left hand, senior pole vaulter Yoo Kim managed to place first in the event at the UCLA-USC dual meet Saturday. While dicing up an avocado the day before the meet, Kim accidentally sliced open his left ring-finger with a butter knife. Bleeding profusely, Kim had the wound inspected by trainers, who bandaged it in hopes that it would not re-open during competition. Luckily, his left hand is his bottom hand while vaulting, leading him to believe it wasn’t much of a factor. “If anything, the anaesthetic made it a little hard to get into the meet today,” Kim said. “I felt a little tired today.” Kim was slightly disappointed by his mark of 17 feet, 5 inches which is well below his personal best. With the second and third place finishes of teammates Pat Luke and Shane Hackett in the event, UCLA swept the pole vault. JUMPING FRUSTRATION: Third place was not exactly what Juaune Armon had in mind when he envisioned his long jump performance before the meet. Though his mark of 24 feet, 1 inch was a regional qualifier, it still placed him well behind USC’s Allan Simms and Andre Serrette. “It’s tough for Juaune because this meet really starts our season,” jumps coach Robert Johnson said. “Right now we need to get prepared for the Pac-10 meet.” Armon has time to regain his form with the conference meet still two weeks away. But to have a chance to score at the NCAA Championships, he will likely need to regain his 26-foot form of past years. Since his fourth-place performance at March’s NCAA Indoor Championships, Armon has battled minor injuries, including a tweaked hamstring on his second attempt on Saturday. He said those did not affect his performance Saturday.
