Pole Vault
The pole vault is the most technical of athletic events, therefore a considerable amount of time should be spent on understanding and perfecting the technique. The vault can be broken up into different sections, which can be worked on individually. All instructions refer to a right handed athlete. adsenset(1)
Pole selection
The appropriate pole to use is determined by your weight. Never use a pole rated below your body weight.
The Grip
A grip area from 6" to 18" (inches) from the top of the pole is the range the pole is made to bend and respond efficiently. Pole manufacturers place a red band around the top of the pole to indicate the top of the recommended grip range. All fiberglass poles have a specific "soft side" which runs the length of the pole and you must identify the specific "soft side" either by using the manufacturer's identification point or by visually sighting down the pole. When vaulting, the "soft side" must face away from you in the direction of the initial bending of the pole. Holding the pole parallel to the ground, "soft side" facing away from you, grasp the pole with the left hand palm down and the right hand palm upwards. Right hand should be approximately 12" from the top of the pole and the hands should be approximately shoulder width apart.

Mission Statement
The key to safe and high level performances in any event or sport is formal event education. Both the athlete and the coach must have a solid understanding of the event and incorporate supported current information and techniques into their training and performances.
It has become increasingly obvious that an effort should be made to educate and/or reeducate the pole vault coaches and athletes of our country. The educational information should be current, relevant, supported, and accurate. This information should be clearly stated and not misleading or so broadly stated that it is left open for misinterpretation. Therefore, an effort must be made to make such information available to the masses.
Based on this assumption the USA Pole Vault Education Initiative was established. The PVEI staff will endeavor to educate the coaches and athletes of the pole vault event and make available the most current and correct information available. The PVEI staff will screen the site’s information for accuracy and correctness. The information will be completely irrefutable, non-controversial, clearly stated, definitive information dealing with the pole vault event in order to give the athlete and coach a final authoritative source. The site will be in continual development and updated with current information, as it becomes available.
ATTENTION: The Pole Vault Education Initiative could use your help in seeing that the educational material we are providing stays online and is regularly maintained! If you have found our site useful, please consider making a financial donation. Any amount will be accepted, every little bit helps! An easy way to help is to visit the sites in our Google Ads!

That ties him with teammate Jon Bednarz who also cleared a personal best 13'3 for second highest jumping the league this season. Bednarz is now just six inches off the sophomore school record set in 2001 by Gavin McMahon '03. Darren Traynor, after clearing 11'9 had three good attempts at 12'3. Junior John Antrim-Cashin cleared a personal best 11'3, while soph Chris Corsillo also PR'd at 9'9.(Note Corsillo only cleared 7'0 once all last year as a Frosh). Two frosh also joined in the PR parade as Conor Prunty and Joshua Lopez-Travetello cleared 8'9.

Physics of the Pole Vault by Kimo Morris I PE = mgx where m is mass (calculated from weight), g is the acceleration of gravity, and x is the height off the ground. Again, from your physics book, you can also get the equation for calculation Kinetic Energy: KE = 1/2 mv where m is mass, and v is velocity (which is the same as speed in our equation). Since we've made the assumption that all the kinetic energy will equal the potential energy, you can just make the equations equal to each other like this: mgx = 1/2 mv If you solve for x (height), you get x = (1/2 v )/g T his solution says a lot! First, notice that mass no longer appears in the equation. In fact, there are only two things left in the equation - speed and gravity. Obviously, gravity is constant. Thus, your absolute height will be determined by how fast you run! Now, let's come back down to reality. There is a lot more to pole vaulting than just running fast. One must work on proper technique throughout the entirety of the vault. The better your technique, the less energy you will lose throughout the vault. But, a generality can be made here. Assuming it were possible for two vaulters to have the exact same technical skills, the one that jumps the highest is the one that can run the fastest. So, let's get back to our equation. Suppose you can run a 100m race in 12 seconds. Your speed (velocity) would therefore be 100m/12s = 8.33 m/s. Gravity is 9.8 m/s

Thought of the Month (1/08) Work on pole runs, high knee sprints, walk through plants, jog through plants. Build up stamina so you can put in a lot of practice jumps in early season. Do drills that simulate vaulting. Do them slowly so you are in the correct positions for muscle memory. Then gradually speed them up. In season you should have stamina for 30+ jumps in a practice.

Newsfinder emagazine is presenting a detailed article about pole Vault.

Pole Vault
Posted by Jim Down in Non Famous section Pole vaulting is an athletics event where the athlete tries to gather his kinetic energy from running and transfer it into a long, flexible pole as an aid to leap over a bar. This is the only event where the tool is used in order to aid the athlete. In all other events in track and field the tools are obstacles or projectiles used to impede the athletes’ progress.
Pole vaulting was known to the ancient Greeks and the Cretans used long poles to vault over bulls. The Celts used to pole vault - but for length. Poles were used in Europe as a practical means of passing over natural obstacles (crossing canals filled with water or jumping over high level fences). Modern competitions probably began around 1850 in Germany, when it was added to the gymnastic exercises of the Turner by Johann C. F. GutsMuths and Frederich L. Jahn. The heavy, rigid poles were made of ash and the athletes climbed them as they jumped. In 1889, the Americans banned the movement of the hands along the pole and invented the technique of reversing the legs upwards, clearing the crossbar with stomach facing down, using bamboo poles with a sharp point at the bottom. They competed on grass, planting the point in the grass, vaulting over a pole and landing back on the grass. In the 1896 Olympics, the record, set with a bamboo pole, was 3.2 m.

Advanced
Pole vaulter soars to new heights By Lauren Brousell Staff Writer April 26th, 2007 Junior Alison Spivak makes it look easy. A physical therapy major and the top pole-vaulter for the Bombers, Spivak has a lot on her plate. Spivak tries to keep herself prepared on and off the field. Growing up in small-town Staatsburg, N.Y., Spivak spent her whole life playing everything from soccer to field hockey, but she found her passion in track and field. More specifically, she grew to love pole vaulting. Taking cues from her older brother, Spivak was one of the only pole-vaulters on her small high school team. Not only did she pole vault, but she also competed in the long jump, high jump and triple jump as captain of her team. For the Bombers, Spivak placed first at the New Jersey Invitational in a team win this past weekend. Last winter, she was named to the all-Empire 8 team in the pole vault for the third year in a row. She also received the honor of being Empire 8 Athlete of the Week twice. Head Coach Jennifer Potter said Spivak will not become complacent because of her accomplishments.
