Pole Vaulting Takes Center Stage in Vermillion
By By KDLT Sports KDLT-TV Derek Miles brought along some of his peers from the pole vaulting world for a showcase at the dome. And whether or not you call yourself a pole vaulting aficianado, and who does really? Anyone can recognize that these guys are the best in the world. "We've had this competition the last couple years, but nowhere near the size and the caliber that we have this year. With as many Olympic medalists as we have and the number one guy in the world and the American record holder in this kind of field...it's pretty rare to get this many guys together in one shot," says Miles. Although our primary field is bicycle helmets, we get a lot of questions about helmets for other activities just because there is no Skating Helmet Safety Institute or Equestrian Helmet Safety Institute where you can ask. We also serve on the ASTM F8.53 Headgear Subcommittee, where we help to develop helmet standards for all types of sports. So here is what we know about helmets for other activities. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a very useful chart of helmets matched to various activities on their Web site.

Equestrian Helmets
The equestrian community developed an ASTM standard in 1988 and it has unique characteristics related to horseback riding and horse sports. In particular, the hazard of being kicked by the horse is unique. If you ride in woods, the larger vents of the bicycle helmet are more likely to snag a branch, another hazard that increases because the rider position is higher on a horse than on a bicycle. As a result, ASTM has a specific equestrian standard, and the design of the helmet is for the impacts encountered in horseback riding. Although some riders do wear bicycle helmets for cost reasons, they can have much better protection with an equestrian helmet designed for their sport. It should meet the ASTM standard for equestrian helmets (F1163). There is no law in the US that prohibits a merchant from selling equestrian helmets that do not meet any standard, so look for an ASTM F-1163 sticker. We do not recommend equestrian helmets for bicycle riding because the lab drop test on flat surfaces is done at only 1.8 meters rather than the 2.0 meter bicycle requirement. In addition, most equestrian helmets are not as well ventilated as most bike helmets for summer riding. Plantation, Florida, has a helmet ordinance requiring ASTM F1163 or its equestrian helmet equivalent as approved by the Chief of Police for age 16 and under. It took effect in 1999. New York State now has an equestrian helmet law as well for riders under 14. Its effective date was 1/5/00. It requires an ASTM helmet and also requires that a helmet be provided if you rent a horse from a horse rental service. For sources of information on equestrian helmets, see

Modernizing a research station at the bottom of the world

The logistical difficulties and great expense prompt one to ask: Why maintain a permanent science base at the South Pole at all? One answer is that certain kinds of research can be done in no other spot. In particular, the South Pole is said to offer an ideal setting for astronomers, because the air is exceptionally cold, thin and dry, making this locale the next best place to space for siting a telescope. The South Pole also provides astrophysicists with a remarkable laboratory to study high-energy neutrinos: AMANDA (Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array) uses deeply buried sensors at the South Pole to register the rare interactions between these particles and the ice itself. Indeed, these problems make the South Pole appropriate for only a limited number of astronomical observations, primarily those in the submillimeter to millimeter regime. Shorter wavelengths (infrared and optical) can be better studied in places like Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which lacks a troublesome inversion layer. And longer wavelengths (centimeter- and longer-wave radio frequencies) are so little bothered by atmospheric absorption that siting the receiving antennas at the ends of the earth is not necessary.

Kevin is remembered as someone who made a difference. He had many friends in State College and on campus. Kevin was an accomplished student and athlete at State College High School and had several significant achievements during his short first two years at Penn State.
We immediately held a meeting inviting everyone and anyone who wanted to attend a discovery meeting on what could be done to make the sport of pole vaulting safer. I was taken back from who took the time to attend that meeting. We had track and field coaches and sport equipment specialists from all over the country attend. In the end we had 24 fantastic people volunteer their time and be there as we discussed what needs to be done to prevent this sport from being the #1 most dangerous event per capita in all of athletics. It was that meeting the paved the way for tons of research on previous accidents, equipment and equipment failure, rules and regulations concerning the sport, training techniques, manufacturers etc.

Another six athletes suffered head and neck injuries; all completely recovered or were expected to. Certainly schools and parents need to be sure that coaches who teach pole vaulting are qualified to do so, he said. Three pole-vaulting deaths in 1983 caused the National Federation of State High School Associations to require that school officials pad all areas in and around landing pits by 1987. From 1982 to 1997, researchers found three other deaths from track and field events, three accidents causing permanent disability and seven other serious injuries from which the athletes recovered. A thrown discus, a heavy shot used in the shot put event or javelin struck 10 of these high school athletes. Two pole-vaulters and one other track athlete hit by an errant discus died in the United States during 1997.

100-meter Dash Javelin Pole Vault ... Bibliography Pole-vaulting was not one of the original Olympic sports in ancient Greece. Some think that the sport was derived from the Dutch habit of dyke-jumping, although one of the earliest pole-vaulting stands was built in Germany in 1791. The objective is, obviously, to get the athlete's centre of mass over the highest bar possible. However, today's pole-vaulters use a quite different technique to that used 100 years ago, when athletes went over the bar with their feet pointing downwards. Athletes now do a complex gymnastic manoeuvre, turning upside down as the jump takes place (figure 2a).
An example of a pole vault
The rules for pole-vaulting that are set by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) - the sport's governing body - are extremely liberal. There is no restriction on the length of the pole, the materials from which it is constructed or its energy-storage capacity. The only stipulation is that poles should be generally smooth and not be covered with too much adhesive tape. Poles were originally made out of solid wood, probably hickory. Slightly more flexible bamboo poles were introduced in the early 1900s, mostly by American vaulters, who dominated the sport at the time. Basic mechanics tells us that the highest stresses occur on the outside of a bent beam, and that a symmetrically bent object, such as a pole, actually has a zone down the middle (known as the neutral axis) where the stresses are very low and even zero. There is therefore no need for the pole to have any mass down the centre. Bamboo, which is a naturally hollow material, is much lighter per unit length than a solid pole - yet provides the same maximum stress. This enables an athlete carrying a bamboo pole to either take a faster run-up or to use a slightly longer pole.
