Steve in Wailuku used to play many years ago in Washington Square with the folks of La Boule NY (he says hi to Yngve - by the way) and would love to get going again in his new hometown.
His boules have arrived, he found some good spots, so all he needs is other players!

Oregon overall is among the fastest growing "petanque states" in the country. With a Portland president to boot, it will probably go even faster! Labels: OR posted by Petanque America @ 7:06 PM 0 comments

Social Petanque on a Bounded Court Introduction These pages discuss a form of Petanque becoming very popular in the United States. It may be popular elsewhere, but I speak only from experience. "Social Petanque on a Bounded Court" differs to some extent from the formal international game originated in France, with its very strict rules. "Social Petanque on a Bounded Court" retains the element of strategy found in the formal international game, but makes it fun for everyone! Petanque is a game everyone can enjoy. Strength, height and age make little difference. Teams can be formed such that they are well balanced and all can enjoy. We were first introduced to this form of Petanque at Cypress Cove Resort . This is a fantastic family-oriented resort and players of all ages and skill levels are invited to play Petanque every morning!! The most distinct characteristic of the game described here is the playing surface. It is bounded by timber, has fixed positions to throw from, and has fixed markers to speed measurement of the initial toss of the cochonnet (or jack). These elements speed play and alleviate interference problems when several games are being played at the same time. For example, Cypress Cove Resort has six courts that are often busy; traditional "open area" rules would leave this many ongoing games open to gross interference.

Dear All, As you may be aware I have been elected on to the WPA Executive as Press Officer and as part of that duty I have been instructed by the Executive to create a new web site for the WPA. Therefore I cannot, and it would not be right, to maintain this web site to the same detail, I am therefore currently transferring content from Petanque in Wales site to the WPA site. I would like to thank everybody for their continued support for the site over the years, especially all the petanque players in Wales and all those friends in England and Scotland who were regular visitors. Best wishes Tony Smith

It was not until 1907, at a place called "La Ciotta", that a guy by the name of Jules Lenoir introduced the game in France. The original game required the player to make a run of 3 to 4 steps before releasing the ball(boules). Jules had the misfortune to be born with some sort of poliomelitis hence making it difficult for him to make the "run". He suggested that the player will have his/her "Pieds tanques" in a playing circle marked on the ground, meaning that the ball could be released whilst in a still position. From "pieds tanques" came the game now known  as "Petanque". WHAT IS PETANQUE?

Boules is a general name for the game of and its predeceders longue butaban and roulette , which themselves evolved from mail (pinball) and quilles (skittles).
The Game
In , a little wooden ball (the cochonnet) is thrown out as a target, at a distance of 6 to 10 meters. The players, with three boules each and divided into two teams, then take turns throwing their heavy iron boules to land as close as possible to the cochonnet. The boules are polished steel, and each set of three is engraved with a pattern of concentric circles or squares for identification. A player from one team throws first, and then a player from the second team. After that, a player from the team that does not have the closest boule to the cochonnet throws. When all boules have been thrown, the team with the closest boule gets a point for every one of their boules closer to the cochonnet than the closest of the opposing team. Comparing distances of closely matched boules is done with everything from long broken sticks or a string to a purpose-built measuring tape. When the round is over the boules are picked up, with a strong magnet on the end of a cord for those to infirm or lazy to bend over, and polished clean of dust for the next round. A throwing line is drawn in the dirt and the cochonnet is thrown out again, often back in the opposite direction, for the next round. The team aquiring thirteen points first wins.
