The word pétanque is a corruption of the French term , "pieds tanques", meaning (more or less) "feet tied together". It refers to the position from which the boule is thrown and differentiates it from other similar games. To be able to play a game of Pétanque you need, firstly, to be nice enough to have at least one friend. Games can be played between two people, each using three boules . The boules are metal balls obtainable at a number of shops selling sporting goods. One can also play in teams of two or three people. ( Teams of two also play with three boules per person , while teams of three play with two boules each .) You will also need a small wooden ball (called a cochonnette , a pig, a piggy, a coche, a woody etc), and any open space of at least 3m by 12m .
