Search Petanque , pronounced "pay-tahnk", one of Europe's most popular outdoor games, is a distant relative of horseshoes, and a first cousin of the Italian 'bocce'. The game originated in Provence in the early 1900's.
The aim is to toss, or roll a number of hollow steel balls ("boules") as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, called "but" or "cochonnet" (meaning "piglet" in French). Players take turns and the team that ends up nearest to the target ball when all balls are played, wins.
Unlike horseshoes, where the aim stake is fixed, petanques' target ball may be hit at any time, which can completely turn around the score at the last second. And whereas the official bocce rules call for a smooth, prepared court with markers and sideboards, petanque can be played on most outdoor surfaces, without any setup.
No special skill is required, adults can play with children, and the equipment is inexpensive. The game of petanque is simple, relaxing, lots of fun, and a perfect way to make new friends. Last but not least, petanque can be - and usually is - played while enjoying a cool drink (the French will often go for pastis) and some tasty snacks! No wonder this extremely pleasant game is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide.

Petanque is extremely simple, just like horseshoes. There's a target, and you have to get as close to it as possible.
What makes it so appealing, is that you can be way ahead for a while, yet lose a second later, or vice versa. Because nothing is decided until the last player plays the very last boule. If he or she moves the aim ball or kicks an opponent ball out of the way, the layout of the boules - and thus your score - may change dramatically.
The Basic Rules
These are illustrated and will get you started in no time at all.
The Official Rules

France, especially the Provence, where petanque originated, has always been a popular holiday destination, so more and more tourists started to play with the locals, bought sets and introduced the game back home, in Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia, Spain etc.. On the other hand, many French expatriates would pack up a set of boules when they moved, and the game spread throughout the world.
We also have a report on the 2001 Championship in Lons-le Saunier, France. Hopefully an incentive for many youngsters to have a closer look at p©tanque.

There were only two changes in the Board: Jan Claire who decided not to run again as President is replaced by candidate Manny Sanz who was voted in as President. GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
We had our annual meeting at Tout Va Bien . A little more than 20 members showed up. A lively crew. The club passed new bylaws: La Boule New Yorkaise is now a division of New York Petanque, Inc., a nonprofit corporation. Elections were postponed to make way for a new round of nominations and an election by mail-in ballots to be completed by mid-February. Sunday, November 4, 2007
    MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
This time the funny team did win. The weather's turning in New York. We are in the low 50s and we think it's nice weather. So while thousands are running the marathon, we are playing in the last tournament of the season. A big turnout. 30 people showed up in time. 10 melee triples. And Eric came wearing the jester's hat. And with Gilles and Bruce, the funny team was set. And they would win.

Menu Events Results Huh? FAQ ... Talk Rules Photos News Short introduction to pétanque (boule). The word pétanque is a corruption of the French term , "pieds tanques", meaning (more or less) "feet tied together". It refers to the position from which the boule is thrown and differentiates it from other similar games. To be able to play a game of Pétanque you need, firstly, to be nice enough to have at least one friend. Games can be played between two people, each using three boules . The boules are metal balls obtainable at a number of shops selling sporting goods. One can also play in teams of two or three people. ( Teams of two also play with three boules per person , while teams of three play with two boules each .) You will also need a small wooden ball (called a cochonnette , a pig, a piggy, a coche, a woody etc), and any open space of at least 3m by 12m . In many parts of the world it is also seen as a prerequisite to have at least one bottle of wine at hand before a game can commence. A coin is tossed to see which team starts the game.
