When Anthony Zahn and his teammates meet for coffee, no one brings a handicapped-parking permit, even though most are triple amputees. They joke about throwing a spare prosthetic leg on the dashboard instead. Story continues below Kurt Miller / The Press-Enterprise Anthony Zahn, who was born with a degenerative neuromuscular condition that attacks the muscles, recently captured the bronze medal in the road time trial at the Para-Cycling World Championships in France. Pushing past their physical challenges, winning cycling events and gunning for the Paralympics define and dominate their lives. Zahn, 32, of Riverside, recently captured the bronze medal in the road time trial at the Para-Cycling World Championships in Bordeaux, France. He rode 19.8 kilometers in 31 minutes, 12 seconds. His goal is to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Paralympics Games next September. "Para," which means "beside" or "along side," refers to a parallel Olympics. The Paralympics allows elite athletes to compete in categories according to the nature and severity of their handicap.

disqualifying the paralympics 2000
by Russ Kick (russ@mindpollen.com) - December 28, 2000
The world's second-largest amateur sporting event just ended. Elite athletes from around the globe competed against each other in dozens of events, shattering records and bringing home medals for 68 countries. But I missed this 12-day event, and chances are you did, too. You see, the United States doesn’t carry broadcasts of the Paralympics. Neither does Australia, which is strange considering it's the country hosting this event. The media in many countries faithfully ignore it, and sponsors stay away in droves. In 1960 the Paralympics first brought together the world's greatest disabled athletes to compete in Olympic-style events. Since the 1970 Games, all forms of disability have been incorporated, so that athletes compete in one of six categories: amputee, wheelchair, cerebral palsy, sight impairment, intellectual disability, and "les autres" (French for "the others," a catch-all category for people with other forms of disability). Within each category, athletes compete against others of similar functionality. For example, blindness is divided into three levels, and cerebral palsy is comprised of eight levels.

Paralympics open in a blaze of light
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Rain that threatened to spoil the celebration held off Wednesday for the 11th Paralympics to open with a big party. Huge fish float above the crowd during the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Sydney Wednesday. The biggest Paralympics picked up where the Sydney Games, the biggest of the modern Olympic era, ended 17 days earlier in a vibrant spectacle of dance, music and Aussie icons. Thousands of glowing flashlights inside the stadium compensated for the starry cosmos that usually backlights the Southern Cross constellation that was hidden behind overcast skies. Gray clouds hung menacingly over the city all day and weather forecasters had predicted heavy rain and strong winds during the evening, but it never rained. Another full-scale party was already in full swing by the time governor general Sir William Deane declared the games open and swimmer Tracey Cross read the oath. In his opening address, International Paralympic Committee president Robert Steadward paid tribute to the unparalleled success of the Olympic Games, then promised more of the same.

Klementich an inspirational athlete
Usually, the best place to find athletes is on the playing field, but you'd also be surprised to find out which ones are walking the halls at UH who don't suit up for gameday. I couldn't give you an exact number, but I did manage to find one. And at first glance, you couldn't make the comparison. His name is Jacob Klementich and he's a graduate student who participates in the Paralympics, athletic contests for the physically challenged. On Saturday, he will compete in the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association championships at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. For Klementich, 38, it will be his sixth time competing in a Paralympic event. I had the privilege of sitting down with Klementich for an in-depth interview. The feature story was published in today's issue of the Daily Cougar It's an inspiring tale about an inspiring athlete. Posted by Ronnie Turner at 09:23 AM var s_prop2="UH Sports"

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Silver 2004 The Paralympic Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities . This includes mobility disabilities, amputees visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy . The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games , and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). (The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics , which are only for people with intellectual disabilities The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games . No relation with paralysis or paraplegia is intended, however, the word Paralympic was originally a portmanteau combining 'paraplegic' and 'Olympic'.
