Wheelchair racers speeding to victory, blind swimmers competing for gold, and disabled skiers pushing their bodies to the limit. These are today's Paralympians. They train hard. They play to win. And in recent years, Canadians have been winning big at the Paralympic Games. The Paralympics began as a postwar sporting event designed to get injured ex-soldiers moving again. But by the 1980s the Games had evolved into an elite international competition. Rehabilitation through sport Toronto hosts '76 disabled Olympiad 'A dive, sort of straddle, sort of roll'

Landmine survivors go for gold in Athens!
SPAMFLTER SPATMFLTER Landmine survivors from Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Lebanon will be amongst the athletes from around the world competing in the Athens Paralympics 17-28 September 2004. We salute these athletes for their inspiring achievements in reaching the Paralympics 2004 and wish them the best of luck for the competition. They remind us that, with hard work and commitment, the scourge of antipersonnel landmines can indeed be overcome! The needs and rights of landmine survivors will be amongst the issues highlighted at the Nairobi Summit for a Mine-Free World, 29 November - 3 December. There, State Parties to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty will assess their progress in provision of assistance to survivors and devise ambitious plans for more comprehensive and sustained assistance for all, including access to emergency medical care, rehabilitation and income generation opportunities. Also to be discussed is the question of how to embed participation of landmine survivors in the work of the Treaty. Send good luck messages to these star athletes!

Wojtek Czyz, running with a space-tech enhanced prosthetic leg, took the gold at the 2004 Paralympics yesterday, finishing the 100 m sprint in 12.51 seconds, a new Paralympic record, 10 hundreds of a second faster than that of Sydney 2000.
German Czyz, the world record holder for long jump, is participating in the Paralympics Games in Athens trusting in space technology and expertise to help him win. He participates in 100 m sprint, 200 m sprint and long jump. For the competitions, parts of the prosthesis he is using are made from material designed for space to make it both stronger and lighter. Czyz lost part of his left leg in a sports accident three years ago and in order to continue his passion for “everything that has to do with sport”, this meant that he had to use a prosthesis.

About the Games
On the 2nd July 2003 the International Olympic Committee announced that the XXI Olympic Winter Games would be held in the city of Vancouver in the province of British Columbia, Canada. One of the great advantages of the Games being hosted by Vancouver is the close proximity to the world-renowned skiing resort of Whistler, which will provide the slopes for the alpine skiing events. There will be two Olympic Villages, built to house the competitors and officials during the games, one in Vancouver, the other in Whistler. Once the Games are over the villages will be converted to residential housing and healthcare facilities for the local population.

Give Oscar Pistorius an Equal Opportunity
By John Williams

W hen I was in high school and later college, I desperately wanted to be a member of the debating teams. Both times, I was denied because I stuttered. The rejections left me bitter, angry and were deeply painful. I could not understand why I could not be given the same opportunity as others to compete. After all, my mind was as good as theirs.
The reality was, it took me longer to speak. To compensate for my dysfluencies, I offered to use a metronome or another rhythm method. The results were the same a resounding no from the powers. I have often wondered if I had the chance to prove myself as a debater, what kind of influence would that success have had in my life?
Let’s fast forward to the present. South African Oscar Pistorius was born with his fibulae missing in both legs. He says he is “the fastest man on no legs.” Pistorius is the double amputee world record holder in the 100, 200, and 400 meters

physical competition is not about people wobbling around in wheelchairs, according to mary ellen synon of the sunday independent
"Perverse" and "grotesque" are not adjectives I would readily use to describe the spirited efforts of athletes at the Paralympics in Sydney. But those are some of the choice words Mary Ellen Synon employed in yesterday's Sunday Independent. She added: "Surely physical competition is about finding the best - fastest, strongest, highest, all that. It is not about finding someone who can wobble his way around a track in a wheelchair, or who can swim from one end of a pool to the other by Braille." "One must question the propaganda that says one ought to applaud the physical performance of the lame as we applaud the physical performance of the fit," Synon continued. She is wrong: physical competition is just as much about courage as anatomical perfection. Psychological bravery is what divides the good athletes from the great. The ability to ignore the cries of pain from your twitching muscle fibres and your pleading brain is where the fundamental battle is fought. Standing alone questioning your own ability, your preparation and your opponent's strength is where your worth as an athlete is determined.

Patti Smith and 300 other performers were part of a show in Torino, Italy's Piazza Castello. The theme of the show was the transition between winter and spring. The Italians continued their eclectic selection of music at the Olympics with opera mixed in with songs from Mary Poppins. Athletes from 39 countries participated in the Torino 2006 Paralympic Games. Russian athletes turned in the most winning performances claiming a total of 33 medals followed by Ukraine with 25 medals and Germany with 19 medals. Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers presented the Canadian flag. The flag was raised as the national anthem was played and pictures of Canadian scenery were shown on a large screen. The next winter Paralympic Games will be held in Vancouver, Canada in 2010. Jim Byrnes, a Vancouver singer performed "Of Whom Will I be Afraid". Mr. Byrnes lost his legs in a car accident. As he did at the Torino 2006 Olympics closing ceremony, Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Paralympic flag in a holder on his wheelchair. Mayor Sullivan is a quadriplegic as the result of a ski accident.
