SetCurrentMenu('THE GAMES,Paralympic Sports'); // > The concept for the first Paralympic Games was created by Sir Ludwig Guttmann in 1948, when English World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries competed in sport to help with their rehabilitation. The Paralympic Games have grown tremendously since then, with 3,806 athletes from 136 countries competing at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. While Paralympians comprise athletes from six different disability groups, the Paralympic Games emphasize athletic achievement, rather than disability. Athletes compete in sports that test their strength, speed, skill and athleticism in events that are both identical to the Olympic disciplines as well as completely unique to the Paralympics. Chicago would provide the perfect setting for the 2016 Paralympic Games, providing these athletes with state-of-the-art facilities, enthusiastic support and a wholehearted welcome into our beautiful city. Archery History
The Stoke Mandeville Hospital was the first to host an archery competition for persons with a disability in 1948, although at first with only the purpose of rehabilitation and leisure. Archery grew rapidly and became one of the first sports played in the original Paralympic Games held in 1960. Now, athletes from 37 counties compete in this sport.

Dubbed "Sky, Earth and Human Beings," the emblem of the Beijing Paralympics is a stylized figure of an athlete in motion, implying the tremendous efforts a disabled person has to make in sports as well as in real life. With the unity and the harmony of "sky, earth and human beings," the emblem incorporates Chinese characters, calligraphy and the Paralympic spirit. It embodies the Paralympic motto of "Spirit in Motion" and reflects the integration of heart, body and spirit in human beings - the core of the philosophy of Chinese culture. The three colours in the emblem represent the sun (red), the sky (blue) and the earth (green).

What are the Paralympics?
A quick rundown:
Athletes:
Special Olympics involves over 500,000 athletes from 8 to 80 with mental retardation. Paralympics provides world-level competition for elite athletes with any disability. This year, for the first time, some individuals with mental retardation will compete in the Paralympic Games. Many of these athletes received their training through Special Olympics. Olympic Games are open to any athletes who qualify.
Competition: While competition and winning are just as important to Special Olympics athletes as those in Paralympics and the Olympic Games, Special Olympics is unique in that it encourages participation and the year- round, lifetime benefits of sports training. We call this "Training for Life." Research shows that Special Olympics participation leads to higher social competence and better self-esteem among participating athletes.
Ability Levels: Every year there are over 15,000 Special Olympics competitive events around the world. Competition in 23 sports is open to athletes of every ability level. Special Olympics does hold World Games every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games, to bring together Special Olympics athletes from around the world. The ninth Special Olympics World Summer Games in New Haven, Conn., in July, 1995, involved more then 7,000 athletes from over 140 countries and drew 500,000 spectators. The next Special Olympics World Winter Games will be February 1-8, 1997, in Toronto, Canada.

Overall, Scholz set American records in the 50-meter butterfly, 800-meter freestyle and 1500-meter freestyle over the three-day competition. He placed first in all three events, breaking the American record in the 800 Free by two minutes. ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2004) See also: Together with Wojtek Czyz three areas that needed improving were identified: the artificial limb itself, the fit and training conditions. Biomedical procedures determined which parts of the prostheses could be improved for running and jumping and it became clear that the major problem was the knee joint element, namely the L-shaped bracket between the artificial knee and the carbon feather, which replaces the lower leg. On behalf of ESA, MST contacted ISATEC, a German company with experience in the use of high-performance materials in space projects, such as high-strength aluminium alloys, titanium and carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastics (CFRP). This company designs and analyses structures in CFRP used for rocket motors and the Alpha Magnet Spectrometer (AMS) experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). AMS is a detector designed for extraterrestrial study of antimatter, matter and missing matter. Using the same techniques and expertise, ISATEC analysed and optimised the L-shape bracket to improve the artificial limb for use in competitive sports. "Detailed analysis suggested different solutions for different sports, each optimised for a specific use," explains Johannes Schmidt, Project Manager at MST. "For sprinting a bracket manufactured from a high-strength aluminium alloy was developed, the material used by ESA in its AMS experiment."
