Pankration has its roots in the world’s first martial art that was introduced to the East by Alexander the Great. Whoever believes that martial arts were born and raised in the Far East is, it seems, mistaken. As in almost every aspect of history, the Greeks got there first , this time proudly proclaiming to the world their place as the first to practice martial arts. The Greek version of karate is called Pankration , a name that has existed since 648BC. It’s a blend of wrestling, boxing, strangulation, kicking, striking techniques and joint locks. Fast forward to 2006 and this particular martial art is alive and kicking, literally, in over 30 countries.  Despite changing over the years, Pankration still looked frightfully violent to me.  Savvas Koumastas , Pankration instructor and champion says: “It is a form of martial arts, you know,” he said flipping a 16-year-old over his shoulders. The boy landed with a loud thump, not giving me enough time to cover my eyes. “It doesn’t hurt,” he explained, “because one of the first things we are taught is how to fall without damaging our bodies.” Legs, arms, feet and palms are first to hit the mat or the ground, allowing the pankratists to protect their spine, back, neck and other vital body parts. “They are taught how to knock down and how to fall down properly,” Savvas said. With what seemed like awfully simple techniques and movements, each student was able to knock down their supposedly clueless opponent with a kick or a twist of the arm. But do students use these techniques outside the classroom? “I have used my Pankration techniques in a fight before but it isn’t the same as during the lesson,” said Antonis, 17. “Your opponent isn’t going to move in the same way your classmate would but we learn to combine movements so we know we can calm an opponent down slowly without causing any damage.”

Anyway, the trip was a success. The Greek government and the International Olympic Committee required that we have Pankration practiced on four continents and in 25 countries within one year. On April 11, 1999 we returned to Greece. We had met all requirements within five months. The common denominator here is that all of us, men and women that had never met, each representing their own country with so many diverse martial art backgrounds, embraced this opportunity with open arms, and even more importantly, open minds.
So here we are 3700 years later motivated and excited about entering the Olympics in 2004. I can only hope that the spirits of the men that walked into the Olympic Stadium in 648 BC are smiling down on us.
I hope to see you in Athens!!

Ancient Hellenic (Greek) martial art of 'Pankration': pronounced variously as; 'Pan-kray-shun Derived from two Greek root words: ‘Pan’ meaning all and ‘Kratos’ meaning strength, power or force. Pankration was a martial combat art that included the use of any and all forms of technique and power. Our first historical inkling of the existence of Pankration comes from the ancient Olympic Games, where it is recorded as an Olympic event in 648 BC. Pankration was more than just an Olympic event however. It formed the basis for all combat training for Greek soldiers. The Roman Empire used Pankration training as the combat training system for all Glatiators. Find out more about our Pankration Program: Modern Techniques

He solely was responsible for reviving the concepts of the ancient Greek combat sport in 1969 some 25 years before MMA surfaced. He is credited as being far ahead of his time and among the early pioneers of MMA. I have read his books and seen his videos and Arvanitis has an extensive skill set. Posts: Junior Member

The history was cool but other than that, it was disappointing and did not appear to be the hardcore system that Arvantis has been promoting the past 30 years. It looked more like karate with some grappling. No face strikes, elbows, or striking on the ground This version does not seem to be the same brutal combat sport I have read about for so many years in the mags.

Pankration was an ancient sport introduced in the Greek Olympic games in 648 BC. Many historians believe that, although Pankration was not one of the first Olympic sports, it was likely the most popular. Some also argue it to be the first all-encompassing fighting system in human history. This is a strongly debated issue in the academic community.
Pankration
Etymology : The term comes from the Ancient Greek words "pan" (meaning "all") and "kratos" (meaning "strength" or "power") or in other words, no holds barred. The term is also used to describe the sport's modern varieties.
Origins
In Greek mythology it was said that the heroes Hercules and Theseus invented the pankration as a result of using both wrestling and boxing, were the two co-founders of panmahia, unarmed combat.
The term " panmahia " would later become disused in favor of the term pankration . The ropolo (club) and lion skin armor would also become symbolic among Hellenic warriors due to the famed feats of Hercules. It had numerious forms such as kato pankration, in which the athletes could fall to the ground and continue the match, and ano pankration, in which athletes had to remain standing throughout the match.
The competitors could use moves like the gastrizein , (stomach trick), which was a kick to the gut, as well as the apopternizein , (heel trick), where a foot was grabbed to throw an opponent off balance. Also one opponent could hold another and punch him during a match. Pankration was more than just an Olympic event, it formed the basis for all combat training for Greek soldiers - including the famous Spartan Hoplite warriors and Alexander The Great's Macedonian Phalanxes.

Pankration: Ancient Greek Martial Arts - the most ancient known?
Ancient Pankration Bag (Pig) Training
I've been curious as to what might have been the fighting style for ancient Byzantines. In searching for "greek martial arts" I found a style called "Pankration" that is virtually unknown in the US. Here is a very interesting video published this month on "Your Greek News" . Aris Makris, a pankration trainer in Montreal and the subject of the video, claims that Greek martial arts documentation dates back as far as 12000 (yes, 12 thousand) years with legend going back as far as 25000 years, and that this far older than Asian styles touting 2000 years of legend. At the very least, it seems well known that Pankration was introduced to the ancient Greek Olympic games in 648 B.C.
Here is what the International Federation of Pankration Athlima has to say about it:
"Pankration Athlima is an ancient Olympic Greek martial art and athletic combat sport that was an integral part of the ancient Olympic games for well over 3,000 years . The origin of the sport can be traced to the mythical Greek demi-God

What is Pankration?
While I cover some of the broader known Martial Arts, I also like to spend a moment from time to time on styles that are barely mentioned outside of those heavily involved in the Arts.
Pankration is one of these, finding its origins in Greece as part of the original Olympics in 648 BC. It is derived from two root words: pan meaning ‘all’ and kratos meaning ‘strength or force.’ Differing from other Olympia counterparts such as wrestling, pankration allowed strikes and throws. The only attacks that were not allowed were those consider dishonorable, such as biting or attacks to the eyes. The contests would continue until sunset or an opponent giving up and sometimes even death! The champion would be recognized as the greatest all-around athlete of the whole world.
As in other Martial Arts styles, there are many different aspects to it that make it more than just a fighting style. There are forms and techniques used to improve the fighting style. And there is an internal piece that is as critical to the warriors in developing as the external discipline.
Under the leadership of Alexander the Great, it is believed that his armies helped to spread this art into the Eastern worlds. While it is debated how much influence this art had on the present day Eastern Martial Arts such as Kung Fu and Karate, it is clear that characteristics from pankration do exist in many current day styles.
