Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana In 2005, Jan Whitaker organized a group of people with and without disabilities to form Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana , Inc. as a chapter of Disabled Sports USA to continue the volunteer work she had been doing since she introduced the concept of adaptive outrigger canoeing to Rochester in 1997. CAOO 's mission is "To provide the opportunity for individuals with disabilities to gain confidence and dignity through participation in paddle sports, recreation and related educational programs". This year, Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana is organizing the 10th Annual Rochester River Challenge Outrigger Canoe Sprint Races on September 16, 2006. This inclusive community event, now the largest outrigger canoe race on the east coast of the United States, is open to paddlers from 10 years of age and up; no experience is necessary; all equipment is provided as well as an experienced steersperson. This Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project event will include guest teams from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, members of the U.S. military services severely injured in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan who are rebuilding their lives through sports. Come join us! Jan and her Ohana (family) of pioneer paddlers with disabilities have:
1) Inspired the establishment of a permanent outrigger canoe program in Maryland for members of the United States Military Services in rehabilitation programs at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Center.

Outrigger canoe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Large Passenger-carrying Outrigger Canoe (bangka), Puerto Galera, Philippines The outrigger canoe Tagalog and Indonesian bangka Maori waka ama Hawaiian wa'a Tahitian : "va'a") is a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers , which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull . The outrigger bestows greater stability and seaworthiness upon a canoe. Smaller canoes often employ a single outrigger on the port side, while larger canoes usually employ a double outrigger configuration. The sailing canoes are an important part of the Polynesian heritage and are actively raced and sailed in Hawaii and Tahiti.
edit History
Outrigger canoes were originally developed by the Austronesian speaking peoples of the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel, and were used to transport these peoples eastward through to Polynesia and New Zealand during the Austronesian migration period. Even today, it is exclusively among the Austronesian groups ( Malay Micronesian Melanesian and Polynesian peoples) that outrigger canoes are used.

Back on the water!
SanDiego Outrigger closing out a stellar Ironman season with a 2-3 victory for the novice women and gosh-darn good race for men!! Our novice gals have been kickin' it all ironman season! We are very excited about the strengths and energies the novices are bringing into the club this year, and very proud of their acheivemens. it all sets the stage for the coup de gras part of outrigger racing and that, of course, would have to be 9-man. Right now though, we all take a giant lateral leap as we move into sprint season, the fast-twitch, high HR, short distance racing part of the summer. Its a whole 'nother animal, and Im not necessarily referring to Jack... anyway, we hold our own during sprints with the anticipation building as we head up to Santa Barbara this weekend for the state sprint championships. More than on-the-water- racing this race marks the end of the novice season. Rite of passage events up and down the beach make this a commemorative day for any a "young" guy and gal.
San Diego...Hoo-ya!

HOME SCHEDULE DOCS MERCHANDISE ... LINKS
Ho'okahi Pu'uwai Outrigger Canoe Club (HPOCC) was founded in 1998 to promote outrigger canoeing and related Hawaiian and Pacific Island paddling sports. Based in Foster City, CA, HPOCC is a 501c non-profit organization, which supports itself through modest membership dues, tax deductible contributions from individuals and fund raising activities in the community.
Ho'okahi Pu'uwai means one heart, one goal in the Hawaiian language and is a sentiment we perpetuate throughout our ohana. We are one of the largest outrigger clubs in the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association (NCOCA), currently with over 100 members ranging in age from 6 to 60+ that compete on a consistent basis. We hold our practices in two locations - Coyote Point Yacht Harbor for open water training and the Foster City Lagoons flat water training.
HPOCC enters crews to compete in all of the NCOCA sprint and long distance competitions, along with races in Southern California (Catalina Channel, Santa Barbara), Hawaii (Molokai Channel, Queen Lilioukalani Race) and New York (Liberty Challenge).
In the early long distance season, from April through the end of May, races typically range from 8 to 15 miles (3 to 5 miles for Novice). The sprint season lasts from June through July and consists of a series of regattas where clubs compete to gather points, culminating in the Sprint Championships at the end of the season. There are races to accomodate anyone who wants to paddle, from our keiki's (kids) as young as 6 years old up to our Senior Masters over 60 years old. Races, ranging from 250 meters (for the keikis) up to 2000 meters match crews of similar age and experience. Long distance season starts up again in August and lasts until September with crews paddling in races around the Bay Area and in Hawaii.

Of all the types of multihull sailing craft that I've been involved in, the outrigger canoe still holds the greatest fascination for me. While catamarans and trimarans are now common in ocean racing, cruising, and charter fleets, the characteristics of the sailing outrigger canoe are still unknown to most sailors. While hull and outrigger float (ama) shape come in a wide variety, outrigger sailing rigs are divided into two types; those that tack and those that shunt. Tacking rigs are similar to those seen in most parts of the world, but shunting rigs change tack by reversing the sail from one end of the hull to the other. The former bow becomes the stern and vice versa. The Micronesian shunting proas always sail with the outrigger on the windward side. There are many variations throughout the Pacific, but the most arresting feature of a shunting proa is the asymmetric hull used in some parts of Micronesia. Polynesians sail both tacking and shunting types. The Ulua is an example of a tacking outrigger.
