what's an outrigger? Forty-five feet of wave slicing machinery powered by six paddlers and attitude Outrigger canoeing began long ago as the principal form of transport for the peoples of Oceania, Polynesia, and numerous other island cultures. While traditional outriggers were carved out of a single tree trunk, modern fiberglass and composite versions embody many of the original design features that make this craft efficient and extremely seaworthy. The most obvious characteristic is the ama (the outrigger pontoon) which provides a high degree of stability without imposing significant drag Today, outrigger canoeing continues as an important cultural activity, while providing competitive and recreational opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts around the world. Major races are now held across the Pacific and the eastern US. The traditional six person boat has been joined by single and double person versions (OC-1 and OC-2). Outriggers excel at long distance open ocean paddling, though they are also raced in short distance sprints. Paddlers switch sides every fifteen strokes to reduce fatigue this also results in a balanced body workout.

Extract from Paddlers Guide to Outrigger Canoeing. Photos Steve West. Deep in a hot languid rainforest, on the Pacific island of Huahine, the air dense with the smells of smoke from village fires and the fragrance of lush vegatation, there is a gathering, a ceremony. The felling of bread-fruit tree, which has long served the community, will perish and be reborn as a va`a, to continue to serve the community in another form. It's a time of sadness and celebration. Tom Blake in 1926 took the sport to a new level of performance, creating a purpose built hollow paddle board 50lbs lighter than boards of the time, with square rails and narrow tail. At the 1930 Waikiki Surfboard Paddling Championship, Tom smashed the record by near three minutes creating a catalyst for the development of the sport.

Adventurer: Outrigger Canoeing
On a balmy Saturday morning, it's practice as usual for the New York Outrigger Club. What this group of outrigger canoe enthusiasts hears is not the crashing waves of the Pacific or the whistle of cool Hawaiian trade winds, but the shouts and calls of tourists who wave frenetically from the deck of the Intrepid at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in Manhattan. As the paddlers battle uptown against the current and pull up alongside the Intrepid for a midmorning stretch session, curious onlookers on the hulking aircraft carrier show increasingly noisy interest.
They are finally greeted with a wave and a hello from the club's president, Di Eckerle, who rides in the six-person canoe's rear steersman's seat. A cheer goes up in reply, and Ms. Eckerle smiles. "Only in New York," she says.
The nonprofit New York Outrigger Club, founded in 1996 by Roger Meyer, launches its canoes from Pier 63, at 23rd Street and the Hudson near Chelsea Piers. The season runs from April to October, and practices are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings, which is when beginners can receive formal instruction.
"It's wonderful to see Manhattan from another point of view," said Ilana Lobet, 53, an Upper West Side resident who owns a custom-framing business. She began paddling in 2002 as a way to train for the Eco-Challenge adventure race in Fiji. "I've lived here since 1976. Out on the water, the scene is always different."

Outrigger Canoeing is the magic workout: quick, cheap, social, easy to get to, and fun for any fitness level. Really - it's not a race, so no one else in the canoe cares how fast you're paddling...or even knows, actually. Everyone in the canoe rows together, but some people row stronger than others and it all still works. (Bottom line: you don't have to have the back muscles of a Hawaiian competitor to enjoy this sport!) But it gets better - because . Take the Adventurous outrigger clinic once or twice, then join the free women's club in San Francisco or the inexpensive co-ed club ($150 a year) in Redwood City. You'll be on the mailing list, get invitations to the twice weekly paddles, and then just sign-up to join the canoe when you're available. Bring friends, they're free too. (For San Francisco, if you're really into it, you can officially join the canoe-owners group and pay a small fee to help maintain the canoes.) These clubs are very welcoming to new members and love sharing the fun (workout) of outrigger canoeing! 5 Great Reasons to try Outrigger Canoeing: 1. Almost anyone can get the hang of it immediately and experience the thrills and rush!

Outrigger Canoeing and Beaching It, Big Island
I was out on the open seas today, using a paddle to navigate our long, white outrigger canoe with Umi, a beach boy at the Fairmont Orchid who loves outrigger canoeing. The Fairmont Orchid is a beautiful resort on the Kohala Coast. The waters are clear here. The ocean breeze blows, and it is a paradise with very good banana mango smoothies. It is also not too far from Waipio or Waimea, so a good place to use as a jumping off point to visit both, if you manage to leave the resort.
I’ve been snorkeling in these waters over the past few days. There is a sanctuary here for sea turtles, who you can easily spot while snorkeling and canoeing. Umi showed me the proper technique for rowing, as well as how to push off and jump in the canoe. We were off.

Outrigger canoeing offers recreational and competitive opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities.
Adapted canoes are used that have specific seats modified for individuals with physical disabilities. The seats are lower and have backs to give extra support. The canoes have two stabilizing flotation devices called "ama" which provide greater balance and stability. A mechanical lift is on the dock for individuals who need assistance transferring from a wheelchair. Experienced steerpersons navigate the canoes.
Team opportunities are available to compete in outrigger canoeing sprints. This program is a partnership between SportsNet Outrigger Canoe program ( http://www.rochesterrehab.org/driver_rehab_sportsnet/SN/sportsnet.asp ) and the Genesee Waterways Center. Application and pricing

Cook Islands Vaka Eiva Festival
An outrigger canoeing celebration and competition on Rarotonga
Philippa Rowlands Feb 20, 2007
The Vaka Eiva festival of canoeing is a blend of exciting canoe races, cultural exchange and a traditional celebration of the canoeing heritage of the South Pacific.
The Vaka Eiva Festival of Canoeing was started by Cook Islands Canoeing Association in 2004 and is hosted on the picturesque island of Rarotonga. This exciting annual festival celebrates the South Pacific heritage of canoeing with races and a host of other activities. The Vaka Eiva does not just offer an exciting and memorable sporting event for spectators, but also a time to see the traditional culture of the Cook Islands and other nations on display. On the first day of the festival there is a welcome by village leaders, dancing and singing performances and a blessing of all the canoes taking part and on the last day of competition each country attending the festival is obliged to present a brief cultural show for the participants and spectators.

Outrigger canoeing for those with disabilites in Rome?
You might plan a trip to Rome for a lot of reasons. See the ancient sites. Visit the Vatican. Experience real Italian food. I'm sure there's more.
Add outrigger canoing to the list.
Huh?
This article
reports that outrigger canoing is available in of all places Rome. And there's an added bonus to traveling to pursue this sport, be it in Rome or perhaps in a more traditional Pacific Ocean locale. Writes Marco Zoppas:
"One of the attractions of outrigger canoeing is that it is a sport accessible to all, with no age limits or language barriers. It is also growing in popularity among disabled athletes. The Makai centre is planning to add special seats to the OC4 and OC6 canoes, enabling athletes with a wide range of disabilities to join canoeing activities at some point in the future.
Another mode of travel conquered?
