Last updated: January 22, 2008 Welcome to the Vulcan Orienteering Club (VOC) Orienteering - The thinking sport I came, I saw, I thought, I ran The VOC hosts orienteering meets primarily at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL (just south of Birmingham, I-65 exit 246). We have a large portion of the 9,000 acre park mapped with enough detail for orienteering. This allows us to start in several different locations throughout the park to keep you from getting too acquainted with any one section of the park. The VOC orienteering season runs from September through May each year. We typically host one meet each month (usually on the 3rd Saturday). All events are open to everyone and offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses, as well as free beginner instruction. There is a nominal fee of $5 per map. (small groups may go out using a single map. Additional fee if electronic punching is used). Our orienteering meets are very informal and are primarily used to introduce people to the sport of orienteering and as practice for national USOF orienteering meets. You may enjoy it as a casual walk through the woods or a competitive run. To find out about the next VOC event, please check the

Home The results for the 11/11 Quail Hollow event have posted. The 2007 event schedule is available here Orienteering is a sport that exercises your mind as well as your body. It has sometimes been called "Cunning Running", "Hiking With a Purpose", or "The Thinking Sport".
Orienteering challenges you to read a map while crossing streams, climbing hills, or hiking along scenic trails. On your map are marked locations (control points) that you must visit. Your job is to figure out the best way to get from control point to control point. At each control point you will find a red and white marker and a unique paper punch that will prove that you were there. Just punch your card and go on to the next control point.
Orienteering is open to people of all ages and athletic abilities. Some people like to run like a hare while others like to take their time and enjoy the scenery. Beginners activities are available at every event and free instruction is available for the asking.
The NorthEastern Ohio Orienteering Club organizes orienteering events for foot, cross-country ski, bicycle, and canoe. We even organize an endurance form of orienteering called Rogaine. [Nope, that's not the hair tonic. The name was coined in Australia before the hair tonic came along.]

Orienteering is a fun way for groups to work on teambuilding, leadership, followership, and problem solving skills in an outdoor environment. Basic orienteering entails learning some basic map and compass skills, then move your group through a series of checkpoints using coordinates, maps, and compasses. The checkpoints must be reached in sequential order as quickly as possible. Participants must develop strategies to navigate from one coordinate to another. The participants who successfully navigate the course in the shortest period of time win! Minimum # of participants: 15 Cost: $15.00 per person Adventures Unlimited is a proud member of

The Price of an Orienteer
Imagine you're from a small orienteering club in Sweden and you've developed a good, young orienteer. Then that young orienteer goes to one of the big elite clubs. The big club gets help in the important relays, and you get nothing.
One of the small clubs in Sweden is proposing that the big club would have to pay the small club. The idea is that for an orienteer up to the age of 23 who moves to an elite club, the elite club will pay compensation to the club where the runner was developed for each year between the age of 15-21:
Here is the "price list":
5,000 Swedish Crowns to the club the orienteer belonged to when they were 15-16; 5,000 for age 16-17; 10,000 for ages 17-18; 10,000 for age 18-19; 15,000 for ages 19-20; and 15,000 for ages 20-21.
I think it works like this...If a runner trained with a club from the age of 15-21 and then moved to another club, then the new club would have to pay the original club a total of 60,000 Swedish Crowns. The payment compensates the first club for its investment.
