A nonprofit organization offering information on the objectives of the sport, membership, ride calendar, ride results, chatroom, newsletters, and links.

Competitive Mounted Orienteering (CMO) is one of the most challenging and exciting equestrian sports - for the competitive as well as family horse rider! CMO is like a mounted treasure hunt, which tests your horsemanship, your map reading ability, and your compass skills - all while having great fun with your horse! A CMO rider taking a compass bearing from a clue - A LARGE ROCK ON A STUMP. CMO stresses sound horsemanship, and we like to call it "The Thinking Horse Sport"! The object of the sport is to ride out as an individual or a team on a prescribed course and find as many of the hidden Objective Stations as you can and get back in the least amount of time, on either a ten station long or 5 station short course.
The long course can be anywhere from a around 8 to as long as 25 miles. The terrain depends on the ride manager's choice of area - but CMO rides are held all over the country from the high forests of Washington State to the rolling hills of Indiana!
The short course is much smaller, and is oriented towards families, riders wishing a less competitive event, training of new horses, and new riders looking to check out the CMO fun. Click here for a complete introduction All riders are welcome. To check out a ride schedule in your area

The Challenge of Orienteering
Welcome to the confounding and addictive world of competitive orienteering By Dougald MacDonald - November 28th, 2007 Bingo!
After 10 minutes of thrashing through the pucker brush around a small granite outcrop, I’ve suddenly spotted the well-hidden Control No. 7. This orange and white nylon box, about the size of a 12-pack, is the seventh checkpoint on my course at a local orienteering meet.
I dash over to the control and find the hole-punch that’s dangling from a short string. Marking my scorecard with this unique punch will prove I’ve been to No. 7. Then I check my map for Control No. 8, about a quarter-mile to the south. Suddenly another racer comes crashing through the brush. I scurry off into the woods.
Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten to check my compass, and after about a hundred yards I realize the sun is at my back. Wasn’t I supposed to be heading south? In my haste to shake my competitor, I’ve made a rookie error and run 180 degrees in the wrong direction.
Welcome to the confounding and addictive sport of orienteering, a blend of cross-country running and navigation, with brains and woods sense counting more than brawn. Course setters hide a series of controls—those orange and white boxes—and competitors race to find them, in order, using an extremely detailed map showing each of the controls’ locations.

News January 19, 2008 We will have a Score-O (on foot) tomorrow starting between 12 and 1:30 at Hopkins Point Lodge in Mendon Ponds Park. There will be a time limit of 90 minutes-get as many as you can in that time (but you don't have to stay out in the cold any longer than you want to!) Control pickup will start at 3:00. There will be a fire and hot refreshments. Winterfest has many other attractions throughout the park 11AM-4PM. January 18, 2008 We will have an event Sunday at Hopkins Point Lodge in connection with Winterfest in Mendon Ponds Park. This was planned as a ski-orienteering course, and if there is enough snow, that's what it will be. If not, there will be a score-o. here is the message from the course setter: Well I have delayed as long as I could before writing this note. We appear to be heading back into winter, but just what kind of winter is yet to be determined. And this weekend is Winterfest weekend at Mendon Ponds Park. And that means orienteering - but just what kind we don't know yet! But Mother Nature is turning on the freezer this weekend, with temperatures expected in the mid teens - and that means the lake effect machine may turn on full force! With the groomers sitting on standby waiting for any chance to get out and make nice wide skating trails, there is still a chance for some reasonable skiing this weekend.

Orienteering: The Thinking Sport
A mental and physical sport of Scandinavian origin, orienteering is a foot race, a puzzle-solving thought race, a cross country running sport, and a fun recreational activity. Orienteering is for men, women, and children of all ages and abilities. All you need is a love for the great outdoors! The objective is to locate orange markers (called controls) in the woods using a special, highly detailed topographic map; participants navigate their way to a series of controls before crossing the finish line. Courses vary in difficulty and length - beginner courses are typically 1-2km long with navigation entirely or almost entirely on established trails, while the most advanced courses are 6-10km long and require extensive cross-country navigation. Participants can travel alone or in groups, running, walking, or leisurely strolling the course. The sport can be enjoyed as a healthy form of family recreation, or as a highly competitive race involving navigational skill, speed, and physical stamina. Congratulations to Sue Hawkes-Teeter, Janet Tryson, Phil Hawkes-Teeter, and Glen Tryson for their third place finish in the 12-point team division at the US Relay Championships on September 23. (

Orienteering Games for MS Windows
"Catching Features" from www.catchingfeatures.com
By far the most realistic simulation of a sporting event. This game reproduces a complete A-meet with day-1 and day-2 courses, other competitors, wildlife, great maps, and wet creek crossings. The scenery is detailed with good terrain, various water features, and all kinds of vegeation. This level of complexity requires a fast, new, computer and lots of disk space. The download is 17 megabytes.
"WinOrient" from www.mirakron.com
This program has very good graphics in both full screen and windowed mode. There is not much variety in vegetation; every tree looks the same; no thickets, no bushes. The map is a bit sparse, but it has good-looking moss-covered rocks! It takes a long time to complete each leg. This is closer to real time, but I don't want to spent an hour in front of the computer to complete one course. This one has no sound. I could not find a replay option. Replaying your route enables you to learn from your mistakes.
"WinOL" from Melin Software
A good overall program though less sophisticated. The software controls are most intuitive, and therefore, make a good introduction to those unfamiliar to orienteering. The demo version fits on one floppy disk, so you can give it to those people who ask, "What the heck is orienteering?" The map quality is not quite as good as the previous program. The program does allow you to run through the scenery by holding down an arrow key. After a run, WinOL will replay your route choices on the map. A good review, but very embarrassing.
