The traditional form (sometimes referred to as "Foot Orienteering" or "Foot-O") involves cross-country running , though other forms have evolved. The competition is a timed race in which individual participants use a special purpose map and a magnetic compass to navigate through diverse terrain (often wooded) and visit, in sequence, control points that are indicated on the map. The course of control points is kept a secret from competitors before the start, when they are provided with a detailed topographic map on which the course is marked. Competitors start at staggered intervals, are individually timed , and are expected to perform all navigation skills on their own. Standings are determined first by successful completion of the course, then by shortest time on course. Rules and principles of the sport are defined by the International Orienteering Federation The English name derives from the Swedish word "orientering". The term was first used to describe the sport in 1918 by Major Ernst Killander, then President of the Stockholm Amateur Athletic Association, in publicity for the first large scale competitive meet held in

    What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation. It is for all ages and degrees of fitness and skill. It provides the suspense and excitement of a treasure hunt. The object of orienteering is to locate control points by using a map and compass to navigate through the woods. The courses may be as long as 10 km. This site aims to inform you about the sport of Orienteering, you can find that information at the left under "The Sport." We also have information on learning how to read maps and peform land navigation using such tools as a compass. This information is based off U.S. Army training and is what you need to know to be an orienteer. Jalic LLC Contact Us

    Orienteering Definition
In orienteering you use a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain. In a typical event, the organizer places orange and white control markers at various land features found on your map. These markers act as checkpoints along the course. The object of the sport is to use the map and compass to locate the control markers and return to the finish. Using your imagination and navigational skills, you try to select the best route to each control. Once there, you punch a score card which verifies that you found the control. There are many versions of orienteering (on foot, bicycle, or skis; at night; in relays, and so forth), but the idea is essentially the same: the use of a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain.
(Text courtesy of NEOC Times Furthermore, most orienteering events are in some way, shape or form a competition (for those inclined). A measure of success is commonly given by time taken to complete a given course or by the number of control flags found during a specific time allotment. A ranking of competitors (including a winner) usually follows. Competition can range from trying to do better than fellows from your club, to elite level where competitors are running and navigating faster than most people can run on a flat road. It's all up to you as to what you want from the sport. The figure at the top of the page is one side of the three-sided orienteering flag.

    • Excitement
The event: In orienteering, participants receive a map of an area which shows a series of sites to visit. Participants develop strategies to navigate from one site to another. The challenge: Find the most efficient route to all of the locations and prove you were there.

Like most pages on the Web, this is heavily under construction. I'm completely overhauling my pages and I really wanted to get the new versions up, though it'll be a while before I get everything in place. This page is by no means a comprehensive list of O-sites, since (a) there are so many of them and (b) I'm sure other people have much better lists already. Instead, my aim is to provide a number of useful starting points for people new to the sport or looking for a club. Informational links have been limited to those in English (though there is a wealth in other languages as well), and the club links focus on those in the Northeast and Northwest US, though there are several starting points for other locations in the US and around the world. Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the

REMINDER-Director nominations The final deadline for Director nominations is fast approaching. Nominations must be received by FRIDAY 1ST FEBRUARY. Do you wish to be part of a team of committed and passionate people working in a dynamic, challenging environment to shape the future of orienteering and ensure the sport is run in an effective, business like manner? Following the EGM decision, British Orienteering will soon be governed by a Board of ten Directors, nine directly elected by the membership. As part of the transitional arrangements, at least three of these Directors will be elected by the members at the AGM on the 22nd March 2008. The Board will be acting as a team, working together in productive meetings, pragmatically tackling the tasks that present themselves. It is not a political forum where the interests of particular groups or areas can be championed. The Board will need to work effectively with Committees and any workgroups it establishes. Directors should demonstrate high standards of conduct and will need to keep themselves well informed about the sporting environment in which we work, and the issues facing clubs.
