Multisport Coaching WELCOME!
by Coach Steve
"I love the feeling of getting tossed by the water and the constant shifting between giving in to the water and then pulling against it." Swimming in open water gives me a sense of freedom. I truly look forward to it! Gone are the confines of the tiled, walled box filled with chlorinated water. A grid of lane lines forces us to swim in a straight line. With no where else to look, we stare at the line on the bottom, lap after lap, turn after turn. The boundaries can make training monotonous. I'm psyched when my open-water training and competition days are in sight! But that means making adjustments in my training techniques. Swimming in the pool is good preparation for open-water swimming from a fitness perspective, but let's face it, it's tough to swim straight without lane lines or blue tiles as a guide. There's no place to stand if you need to catch your breath, and no pace clock to measure your progress. This is foreign territory! For those of you who are relatively new to open-water swimming, here are a few tips:

In a move to shake off Britain's Nanny State image, the Prime Minister announced the creation of the Risk and Regulation Advisory Council (RRAC) . The Council, dubbed "the body for common sense", will work with ministers, civil servants and voluntary organisations to develop a better understanding of public risk and promote a more considered approach to public risk.
Mr Brown, who launched the RRAC today (16/1/08) said: "The issue of public risk is one of the most challenging areas of policymaking for any government. I have asked the Risk and Regulation Advisory Council to provide a catalyst for the change we need in the way policy is developed across all departments " .
The RRAC is chaired by Rick Haythornthwaite chair of the Better Regulation Commission and comprises of seven unpaid members, it will report directly to Downing Street.

first real open water swim
today i did my first real open water swim, complete with wetsuit. i've had issues with swimming for a long time - when i was a kid, i almost drowned. i blacked out, came to with people over me. so, water kinda freaks me out but only when i can see the bottom.
we got in the water, and started out in a grassy area. grass is freaky :-) i had a hard time controlling my breathing due to nerves, so i had to stop quite a bit to get myself under control. i was able to swim the 150 yards or so the buoy, went around and started back. i was doing 5 or 6 strokes, taking a break, 5 or 6 strokes, taking a break and so on.
after we got back to shore, i was able to calm down, and went back out 15 yards or so over the grass and made myself look down, and focused on my breathing. i came back in much better form, and i think the next time out will be much different. only a few weeks to the tri, i feel better about it every day! The open water swim was started in 1994 in honor of Masters swimmer Steve Omi's life. Steve passed away from cancer one month before his 37th birthday. He was well liked and respected by his fellow swimmers. He was an inspiration in life and throughout his battle with cancer his strength and fortitude was the impetus for starting a scholarship fund to honor his memory.
This open water swim is a fundraiser for a scholarship to be awarded to a local graduating senior planning to swim at the collegiate level. The recipient is not necessarily the fastest swimmer. Preference is given to a senior that has shown dedication to swimming and been an inspiration to other swimmers. Our desire is to acknowledge a student that treats others with respect, provides a role model, and takes a positive approach to life. These traits represented Steve Omis character. The money raised from the event goes for actual costs and to the scholarship fund.

More Articles Well it is that time of the season where you have either completed a couple of races or you are getting ready for the first open water swim. Now it is time to leave the comforts of that nice , clear, warm community swimming pool. I have compiled a list of a few tips that might make that experience a little less stressful. One of the first things to consider would be the difference in open water swimming versus the pool where you probably have done most of your training. The big variable in open water swimming would be the conditions. You would rarely have 2 ft waves nor 50 other swimmers in your swim lane at your masters swim practice. The best tip for handling some of the conditions is experience. The more that you have been exposed to various conditions in open water the more comfortable you will feel on race day. So with that being said here are a few additional tips to consider: The Wetsuit - A proper fitting wetsuit can improve your swim time 20% or more due to increased buoyancy and decreased drag. Not to mention a wetsuit will help keep you warm in colder water. You can also use cooking spray on the outside of the suit (forearms and shins) to aid in removal. (Don't use petroleum base spays or lubricants, due to the detrimental effects on the suit)

HISTORY
The Emerald City Open Water Swim was the first event of its kind in the Seattle area. Dave Gertsch saw the need for an open water swim in Seattle after participating in similar events in California. He organized the first Emerald City Open Water Swim in August of 1984. In the events first year there were approximately 100 participants. Since then the swim has had as many as 500 swimmers. The swim has developed into a family event with entertainment, awards, and door prizes following the swim. There is at least one family who has three generations of swimmers who compete together each year. Participants enjoy trying to find the year of the swim, which is hidden in the T-shirt design, each year. Reportedly, the weirdest door prize awarded at the event was a free tattoo!

About the Catfish Open Water Swim
This event has grown to be one of the largest Open Water Swims in the country. We knew there were plenty of triathletes and swimmers in the Bay Area, and we also knew they didn't have many chances to compete in clean open water. So we gave all these athletes the chance to swim (legally) in one of California's best and most scenic reservoirs: Steven's Creek Reservoir. The venue is ideal for competition, offering clean water, warm sun, and a beach party atmosphere. This open water swim is quickly becoming one of the Bay Area's best summer events.
