The Fine and Noble Art of Alfresco Natation
Welcome to my swimming pages, covering outdoor swimming spots mostly around the North West of England. All sites featured are open to the public and accessible at least on foot or bike via public rights-of-way. All water should be treated with the utmost respect. What is a gentle, supportive, relaxing medium can also be a potential hazard (note: "can be" not "is"), so good old common sense must be exercised at all times. Water is heavy and dense and once it's on the move little can stop it: you go with it! The following are my suggestions for a safe water experience based on a lifetime love of water in all its manifestations: Don't swim in open water unless you are a competent swimmer. The only drownings I know of involved children capable of swimming just a few strokes. All local swimming pools offer swimming courses which are an investment for life. They are life-savers, not just for swimmers but also for anglers, boaters and others whose work or play takes them on or near water. I had professional tuition at school and when I started to swim I actually looked forward to my weekly Games period! Breast stroke is by far the best for swimming in open water. If you get cramp in your legs you will still be able to swim using only your arms. You must also be able to float. Remember, there's no convenient poolside to hang on to if you need to rest. If you become proficient in breast stroke then it's easy (and important) to learn the "lifesaving stroke" used to support and carry to safety anyone in difficulty.

22. SwimTrek, Swimming Adventure Holidays Around The World
Pools are great for training, but nothing beats open water swimming holidays for fun, freedom and for a great feeling of achievement.
http://www.swimtrek.com/
SwimTrek is the world's only swimming holiday operator, running swimming tours to Croatia, Greece, Malta, Germany, Finland, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand and the British Isles. We go island or lake hopping following routes of cultural, historical and geographical significance. Pools are great for training, but nothing beats open water swimming holidays for fun, freedom and for a great feeling of achievement. All locations have been chosen for their excellent water quality. SwimTrek swimming holidays are suitable for most standards of swimmers, so why not experience something different and exciting? How far do I have to swim?
The total weekly distance covered in any of the tours averages out at no more than 5km/day. This may seem short for some and long for others, but we know that your trip should be a holiday and not an endurance event! Time to rest and relax is incorporated into every trip on every day. You can of course hitch a ride in the support vessel at any time.
An Island Hopping typical day
Walking through beautiful and sometimes challenging terrain, we reach our preferred departure point for the morning swim to the next island. Swimmers will then depart in groups (depending on swim speed) under a motorised escort to the next island, where you will have an opportunity to rest, enjoy a meal and explore areas of interest.

Open Water Swimming
Each summer in Victoria, thousands of people of all ages take to the beaches around Port Phillip and Westernport bays and the ocean beaches to participate in the fantastic sport of Open Water Swimming. For some, it's just a great way to combine their love of swimming and the freedom of swimming in the open water. For others, it's what they train through the cold winter months for, swimming hundreds of kilometres up and down the pool. And for some, they just love the excitement and atmosphere of the events. The profile of the sport has recently been lifted with the introduction of the 10km event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and distance pool swimmers of the calibre of Grant Hackett and Craig Stephens mixing it with the Australian open water racing stalwarts. Why not give it a try - there are shorter novice races at some of the events if you're not sure if you're ready for the full distance. Have a look at the Open Water Swim Calendar to find an event that suits you.

OPEN WATER SWIMMING GRAND PRIX 2007

Following the cancellation of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix 2007 event in Rosario (ARG) and Atlantic City (USA) by the Organisation Committees, the FINA TOWSC Commission has reviewed the Rules and Regulation for this Grand Prix. Currently the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix 2007 Rules and Regulation state in Point 5.2 that swimmers have to swim and finish within the time limit of at least five races and in addition need to take part in the last event in Sumidero Canyon (MEX) in order to be eligible for overall prize money and final rankings. Considering that the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix 2007 consist now only of eight races instead of ten, the FINA TOWSC Commission reconsidered the requested number of races in point 5.2 of the Rules and Regulation as following: "Prizes will be awarded to the first eight placed men and women. The swimmers are eligible for prize money, based on overall points achieved, providing that they took part and finished within the time limits, in a minimum of three (3) races and participated at the last event of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Sumidero Canyon (MEX) on 13th October 2007 "

The Fat Salmon Open Water Swim is the premier Open Water Swimming Event in the Seattle Area and the Northwest. Hundreds of Swimmers have participated in this event since it was first run in 1999. Two swimming distances are offered to accommodate swimmers with different levels of experience and ability. Swimmers who are new to Open Water Swimming or who are more comfortable swimming a shorter distance can wet their toes with our 1.2 mile swim. Those with more experience who want to challenge themselves with a truly long-distance event should opt for our 3.2 mile swim. Both swims take place in Lake Washington, a large fresh water lake in Seattle, WA. The 3.2 mile swim starts under the I-90 bridge and follows the shore to Madison Park. The 1.2 mile course starts up the beach at Denny Blaine Park, intersects with the 3.2 mile course and also finishes at Madison Park. See our course map for details. Pond life!
Nottinghamshire swimmer Helen Gorman has traded tiles for trees and chlorine for pond plants. "One of my first outdoor swims was at Newstead Abbey, and I've swum in Colwick Lake and Holme Pierrepont" Helen Gorman Swimming in open water is swimming as nature intended. You breathe the fresh air and paddle past plants and wildlife and fortunately the fish usually get out of the way. I would trade in tiles for trees, and chlorine for pond life any day! Getting into a lake or pond to start a swim can be a little breath taking. Solar rays warm the water, but not to the level that boilers heat swimming pools. Once you get moving though, the water feels refreshingly cool. There are a few insider tricks and tips to keeping warm. Most of your body heat is lost through your head so try wearing two swim caps and notice the difference. But don't get tempted to douse yourself in goose grease, it's really a bit of a myth that you need to do this unless you're going to be swimming for hours and hours. The water heats up during the summer and as long as the air temperature is warm then the best time of year to swim outdoors is August and September. Early summer could be a little chilly! One of my first outdoor swims was at Newstead Abbey, and I've swum in Colwick Lake and Holme Pierrepont, but unless you're part of an organised club or event, there isn't anywhere to go and swim outdoors in Nottinghamshire. Open waters present a lot of dangers, particularly as they're not life guarded. It's a real shame that there isn't a designated place for people to swim.

Qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Swim
Similar to cyclists in the Tour de France, marathon swimmers compete in very close proximity to one another, swimming most of the course in a large pack. While a few swimmers will try to break from the pack as the race progresses, the race will culminate in a fast and furious finish as the athletes sprint for the gold, silver and bronze...and places #4 through #25. So how do these athletes qualify for Beijing?

Has anyone done any open water swimming yet?
As the weather was looking so good I thought it was about time I did some open water swimming. Unfortunately the weather turned all British at the weekend so I decided against that and just did my usual runs, cycle and brick work.
I thought I would try a local 50m outdoor pool this evening just to break myself in gently.
I'll report back.
