Introduction
In my many years in this sport, I have never seen any reasonably complete article in the magazines dealing with open water swimming (they seem to rehash the same basic stuff every few years). A lot of them talk about how to draft, or tell you to look up every few strokes to stay on course, but very few seem to deal with the subject in much detail. So last summer, I started to gather my thoughts and experiences on the subject. I finally got back to it just now. Rather than deal just with racing in open water, I have tried to deal with both swimming for fun and racing. I welcome all comments ! (Did I forget anything? Am I completely off base? Are there any other tips that you have found particularly helpful?) Enjoy!

Know the course. Look at the map of the swim or go to the lake, ocean etc., itself and figure out which direction you will need to swim and when. Talk to people who have previously done the race (in past years). Also pay attention when the waves(groups of swimmers) in front of you go and watch the pattern they are swimming in. If it is legal take another racer with you and swim the course in advance. 9. Learn more than one stroke.

Jump to: navigation search Open water swimming is an activity in which people swim in large, outdoor bodies of water such as oceans bays lakes and rivers . While casual swimming in such bodies of water technically qualifies as "open water swimming," this article is limited to human long distance swimming in open water with the goals of fitness and/or competition. The rise in popularity of triathlons , which usually include an open-water swim as the first stage (followed by cycling and running), has led to an increase in interest and participation in open water swimming. The triathlon made its Olympic debut at the Sydney Games in 2000 and involves an open water swim of 1500 meters (1.5 kilometers). Open water races of 5, 10 and 25 kilometers were included in the 2005 World Swmming Championships held on Montr©al in July 2005. There are many events around the world which attract large numbers of open water swimmers, including the Rottnest Channel Swim and Escape from Alcatraz . On October 27 the International Olympic Committee added the 10 km open water swim as a 2008 Olympic event.

First Open Water Swim
I did it. Lake Ontario, 60 degrees. It IS cold! Even with a wetsuit. Especially the first couple of minutes in the water. Filling the wetsuit with water was a shocking experience.
After waiting for the water to warm up in my wetsuit, I started to get used to the cold on my hands and feet. Then another shock. My face! Arg. For two minutes I get an ice cream headache. Probably my brain trying to tell me this is not such a good idea. But I ignored it and pushed to get to that first buoy.
Once I started swimming, I forgot about the cold. All that was in my mind is the openness, the fresh air, the smell of the water. Anything else than chlorine is good! And my goal, different from usual, getting to a buoy, swimming straight. How wonderful it is not to look at a line at the bottom of a pool, feeling the waves and trying to be in sync with nature. This is how swimming was meant to be.
It might sound weird, but my first experience with open water swimming was far from being scary. Just a bit cold. So I did only about 1100m, which I think is acceptable for a first time, and in 60 degrees water. I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the next group swims, I'm actually thinking about going twice a week, when my initial plan was once a week in the lake and twice in the pool.
