Benefits of Olympic Weightlifting
You are probably wondering what makes Olympic Weightlifting a better choice for resistance training than others forms. Weightlifting offers many benefits over bodybuilding, powerlifting, and machines. However, the main reason people do not participate in weightlifting is because they are afraid of getting injury, however this is a false assumption that is easily discredited. Safety and Injury Aspect of Weightlifting
Body Composition Effects
Another benefit of weightlifting is the amount of muscles used in the lifts. The Olympic lifts involve basically every muscle in the human body and this entails a great workout. Olympic weightlifting also forces stabilizer muscles to activate to secure the weight overhead in the lifts. For a recreational lifter Olympic weightlifting will cut down on the exercise time, allowing them to get done in 45 minutes to 1 hour what they used to do in "traditional splits" for 1.5 hours or more! In an 8 week Olympic weightlifting program study, participants lowered their resting heart rate by 8%, lean body weight increased by 4%, fat dropped 6%, and systolic blood pressure decreased by 4% (Stone, Cardiovascular). Not only is Olympic weightlifting safe it is a great way to stay in shape too! Athletic Ability
Effect on Bone Mineral Density
Enjoyment Factor
One aspect of Olympic weightlifting that people enjoy is the lifts themselves. People enjoy the feeling of the barbell being weightless as they drop underneath it or they enjoy the speed that it takes to complete the lift or maybe they just enjoy mastering a technical skill. For most people there is a larger sense of satisfaction that comes from successfully hitting a personal best in the snatch or clean and jerk than finally getting those 19 inch arms or something along those lines.

Turkey's Naim Suleymanoglu, who is considered the greatest Olympic weightlifter in history, weighed just 140 pounds and stood 4 feet, 11 inches tall. That combination of size and strength earned him the nickname "The Pocket Hercules."
Women's weightlifting made its first Olympic appearance in 2000. Both men and women must complete two different lifts in this event. In a "snatch lift", the barbell is pulled from the platform to above the head in one continuous motion. In a "clean-and-jerk" the lift is done in two motions. First, the bar is pulled up to the shoulders as the lifter goes into a squat and follows that with a burst into an upright position. Once there, with the bar resting on their chest, the lifter must extend his/her arms and raise the bar above their head and wait for the referee's signal. The maximum weights the lifter is able to successfully lift using both techniques are added together to determine the winner.

Sample Olympic Weightlifting Routine
This Olympic weightlifting routine is an example of how Olympic-style lifts can be incorporated into a strength training program. It is designed for individuals who have little Olympic lifting experience but who do have a significant strength base. It is essential that younger and less experienced strength trainers follow an anatomical adaptation strength phase to prepare muscles, ligaments and connective tissue for more strenuous training such as this. This sample Olympic weightlifting routine presupposes the athlete has recently completed at least 12 weeks of foundational strength conditioning. Perhaps the main reason is due to their complexity and the space required to complete the lifts safely. It's a shame however, as contrary to some misguided beliefs, Olympic-style weightlifting under correct instruction is very safe and can offer some athletes great performance benefits...
Should Athletes Adopt Olympic-Style Lifting Into Their Routine?
Olympic weightlifting routines and exercises are finding themselves into more and more sports training programs. While they can offer advantages to some athletes, they are far from the magic bullet that many strength and conditioning experts claim.

Pyrros Dimas, Naim Suleymanoglu, Hossein Rezazadeh, Ivan Abadjiev: the biggest names in Olympic-style weightlifting are the guys IronMind has been rubbing elbows with for over 15 years, and that’s why when we talk about weightlifting—whether it’s how to do a power clean correctly or what the Bulgarian weightlifters really do in training—you are getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. IronMind publishes MILO , the only iron game publication that was credentialed for weightlifting at the last three Olympics. And through its landmark training hall videos, IronMind introduced the concept of the no-no-no squat and turned Ivan Chakarov and Stefan Botev into household names in the U.S. weightlifting community. The president of IronMind, Randall Strossen, has covered weightlifting at the last 14 World Weightlifting Championships and 13 European Weightlifting Championships, and the last three Olympic Games. Throw in his coverage of weightlifting at the last two Asian Games, weightlifting at the 1990 Goodwill Games, and the last three Asian Weightlifting Championships, and you know why IronMind stands apart in the field. Olympic Weightlifting
Let's examine an elite-level bodybuilder, a powerlifter, and an Olympic lifter (weightlifter), each weighing the same. The bodybuilder is clearly the most muscular, the powerlifter is usually the strongest, and the weightlifter is usually the most powerful. Participants from each of these sports perform many similar exercises, such as squats and pressing movements. In addition, power training is helpful even for those interested in more aesthetic goals. Research suggests that the fast-twitch muscle fibers that are involved in explosive movements are more capable of hypertrophy than slow-twitch fibers. So even if you don't decide to compete in weightlifting, by adding power movements to your training you can have both a buffed body and some of the athletic skills to use it. You can add explosive movements such as snatches and clean and jerks to most strength-training programs even if you aren't interested in competition just yet. Keep in mind a few pointers to maximize the benefits of performing these movements. The Olympic lifts and their variations require a higher degree of skill than simpler exercises like a barbell curl or a shoulder press. Spend time learning how to do the weightlifting movements with a broomstick first. Once your technique is developed, you can start to progressively add weight.

Former gymnast/soccer player finds silver lining
Click here for more on this story Latest: Monday September 18, 2000 10:17 AM SYDNEY, Australia On the morning of most FIFA tournament gold medal games, the staff of the international soccer body customarily engages the local organizing committee in a friendly. In the game that preceded the Olympic gold medal matchup in 1996, it was revealed that, on the field of play, Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games worker Tara Nott an otherwise engaging type who could've been cast as the fresh-faced, spunky girl-next-door on any sitcom doesn't do friendly very well. In the heat of battle Nott upended some geezer from FIFA and was yellow-carded by referee Esse Baharmast. "You have to calm down," Baharmast told Nott. Calming down is not for the 5'1", 105-pound Nott, which may explain why, after only five years of competing, she won a silver medal on Sunday in the first ever women's Olympic weightlifting competition. Nott lifted 82.5 kilograms (181.9 pounds) in the snatch and 102.5 kg (225.75 pounds) in the clean and jerk to finish behind Bulgaria's

History of Weightlifting
Humans have been holding contests to measure individual strength and power for thousands of years. In Ancient Greece , weightlifters held competitions to determine who could lift the heaviest rocks . Later on, the Greeks invented dumbbells for weightlifting competitions. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the method of removing clappers from bells, which made them soundless during lifting. Weightlifting became an event at the first modern Olympics in 1896 and the World Weightlifting Championships have been held every year since 1891. Women first started competing in the Championships in 1987.

Lifting Our Youth to Greater Heights! about us Team New Jersey was established in 2000 by Bob Giordano, a competitive Olympic Weightlifter and a member of the 1980 United States Olympic Weightlifting Team. The program began when a local youth asked Giordano to teach him the technique involved in Olympic style weightlifting. After several months of training, that youth entered his first Olympic Weightlifting competition. He astounded everyone with his medal winning performance. Since that time, many other young people have joined him in training with the group that has come to be known as Team New Jersey The nucleus of the competitive team consists of fifteen to twenty young men and women, who train on a regular basis and compete throughout the year. In a short time, Team New Jersey has garnered many medals and honors, both individual and team, recently capturing the team trophy for best team at the Metropolitan Open Championship in Queens New York Additionally, our team members have established many state records in the various weight categories.
