Olympic-style Weightlifting
An Introduction
By John Cissek MS, CSCS O lympic-style weightlifting is a sport that is inaccessible to many and misunderstood because of this. Rightly or wrongly, the sport is so difficult that many of its practitioners will develop the kind of attitude that turns off perspective participants. With this article, Jason is letting me put up a few things to try to expose more people to the sport, minus the politics and bs! Olympic-style weightlifters contest two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. In the snatch, a lifter takes a wide grip on the barbell and lifts it from the floor to a position overhead in one motion. In the clean and jerk, the barbell is first lifted from the floor to the shoulders (the clean) and then from the shoulders to a position overhead (the jerk). Both men and women compete in Olympic-style weightlifting. The 2000 Olympics will be the first time that women will be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Contestants are divided into either ten (for men) or eight (for women) weight classes. The weight classes in Olympic-style weightlifting are:
Men: under 47 kg, 51 kg, 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg, 105+ kg

Jay - nice job on your lifts today! When is your comp next week? Where is it? In Pittsburgh? Is this your first comp? Let me see how many more questions I can ask in one paragragh...sorry. Also, took your advice on the carbs...am focusing on lowering them. Hope you are having a great Saturday! December 8, 2007 7:57 PM

Hey Kim, thanks for the kind words. Here is tentative schedule for the next month. Hoping to make little gains at each meet and it also gives me a very clear goal and something to focus on. Hope the reduced carbs are working, but really, I'm just copying what others are doing, primarily over at the PM Boards. Have a super week, let's keep in touch. The Olympic lifts will improve your explosiveness. Explosiveness is a function of speed and strength. Not only will your speed and strength improve but so will your flexibility, stability, and balance. Olympic Weightlifting can be a part of any type of fitness or sports training program. It can be done safely by a variety of people, both male and female ranging in age from pre-teen to senior citizen. All of the Olympic lifts can be modified to fit your fitness, sport, or medical profile. We welcome all newcomers! Our U.S.A.W. and N.S.C.A. certified personal trainers supervise all OPEN LIFT sessions. Our trainers can assist you with designing and implementing a workout. They can assess your situation and monitor your progression. Each time you report to an open lift session you will check in at the door. The PowerGym is available for OPEN LIFTING workout sessions during the following hours:
Fridays: 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. You may drop in and leave at anytime during these time blocks. However, we ask that you limit your total workout duration to 1.5 hours and let others "work-in" on the platforms when the room is near or at capacity. Both the open lift sessions and the Olympic weightlifting workshops are FREE!

    Olympic Weight Lifting
The sport of Olympic weight lifting is a staple of the Olympics and probably the first thing that comes to mind to most people when the subject of lifting weights comes up. It is exciting to watch someone take a barbell loaded with weight, and rip it from the floor and to a position fixed over their head in less than a second! Men and women routinely lift weights that are two to three times their bodyweight and more, over their heads with consummate ease. It is no wonder that millions of people get excited about watching it every four years. When most people go to the gym to build strength or to just get in shape, however, they seem to forget all about Olympic lifting and go straight to the shiny new machines and the cardio equipment. The problem with that is that one of the best ways to build muscle fast and to improve functional strength is through a weight lifting plan that includes some weight lifting exercises. Exercises like the power clean, the clean and jerk, the behind the neck push press, and the high pull will do wonders for your development. Plenty of information on this subject, and how to do the exercises can be found in Milo, which is a quarterly publication that can be found at www.ironmind.com

Olympic Weight Lifting Technique: Power Clean and Jerk
Olympic weight lifting technique is vital for proper form to achieve your full potential. There are two main Olympic lifts called the Clean and Jerk and the Snatch. For most people they will find the clean and jerk the easiest to learn out of the two, BUT the snatch is the most athletic movement in sports.
The Olympic weight lifting technique uses focus, speed, strength, stability, muscle, mental drive, and your Central Nervous System. The mental power of your mind will be the main force and success of your Olympic weight lifting technique.

The power is in you to total master the Olympic weight lifting techniques, so start off with a small weight or just the bar until you are doing perfect repetitions. Even practice in your mind performing at your peak, think of how it feels, what you saw, your facial expression and ask yourself how you are going to perform today, the answer is that you are power, and you were made to succeed and conquer.
The power clean is the first exercise you should learn to master out of the Olympic lifts, so lets go into detail on developing perfect technique to avoid injury and to help you lift even more weight.

Olympic style weightlifting can be modified and adapted to help athletes develop explosive strength and power for all sports. If trained and done properly, modified Olympic style weightlifting can help athletes to condition themselves for explosive power, muscular endurance, strength, speed, quickness, agility and cardiovascular fitness.
    Anaerobic Power and Endurance
In any martial arts training including MMA and BJJ, it requires a fairly good combination of both anaerobic and aerobic fitness. You need both types of energy to excel in sparring or fighting. You will also need to know how to generate explosive power to break boards or execute your knockout punch or kick. In a typical round of sparring, it involves a series of short bouts of anaerobic power output (punching, kicking or grappling) followed intermittently by aerobic movements (bouncing around, shuffling, checking, or faking).

Weightlifting epitomises the human desire to seek out challenges, to attempt to do what is seemingly impossible, and to succeed. For using weights to develop physique, see bodybuilding A weightlifter about to jerk 180 kg Weightlifting (Olympic style) is a sport in which competitors attempt to lift heavy weights mounted on steel bars called barbells , the execution of which is a combination of power flexibility , concentration, skill, will power, discipline, athleticism, fitness, technique, mental and physical strength. The term "weightlifting" is often informally used to refer to weight training . Olympic weightlifting trains the athlete for functional strength, utilizing the body's major muscle groups. For this reason, the Olympic lifts (or simplified versions such as the power snatch or clean) are extensively used in training for other sports such as American Football . Weight lifting is a plays a vital role in the success of many athletes but it can also be an athletes worst enemy. Technique is the most important part is weight lifting and with out proper technique weight lifters will get hurt and before they are able to gain strength and muscle they have to heal their muscles. Giving your muscles rest is also just as important as working your muscles. When lifting weights the muscles are actually being torn into small pieces and when they become over worked they tend to give in and become injured. That is why it is just as important to rest (let your muscles heal) properly.
