Cross Country skiing and snowshoeing are fun, easy to learn, inexpensive, and healthy ways to spend some of your free winter time. Since '79 we have taken pride in our wholesome natural foods cafe, unique laid-back atmosphere, curvy exciting trails, and backcountry ski specialty shop. Our day lodge provides close access to some of West Virginia's most treasured high country. Located in a snowy corner of the Cabin Mountain range of West Virginia's High Alleghenies, we pick up much of our 160" annual snowfall off the Great Lakes whenever strong northwesterly winds drop out of Canada. Originally built as the Weiss Knob Ski Area in 1959, Bob and Anita Barton operated 4 rope tows and had snow making here. We now maintain 50 km of trails all ranging from 3200 ft to 4400 ft. Over 1,200 vertical feet to cross country up and over! Click on map above for larger image . For more trail maps click here.

Bulletin Board or call the Nordic Hotline at (970) 429-2039) The Moore Trail offers a technical 1.5 Km loop and access to the High School Trail from the Aspen Golf Course trails. Pyramid Peak looms in the background. The Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Trail System is unique to North America because it links two towns (Aspen and Snowmass Village) via the Owl Creek Trail which meanders through meadows, wooded areas and crosses three distinct valleys. In addition, the system has trails east of Aspen on the North Star Nature Preserve , along the Roaring Fork River, adjacent to the Aspen High School and the Aspen Valley Ski Club training building. It has trails adjacent to the Snowmass Aspen Golf Course and one on the Snowmass Golf Course . The combination of the varied, entertaining ski trails, wonderful vistas, amenities of trail-side cross-country centers, restaurants, athletic clubs and training facilities makes the Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Trail System really very unique and rewarding to ski and snowshoe on. This trail system is also the largest free groomed cross-country ski system in North America. There are 60 kilometers of groomed skiing available in this trail system. The majority of the system is groomed for both classic and skate skiing although there are some trails that are classic-only. Grooming is done with either small Pisten Bully snowcats or snowmobiles. This is a true winter trail system and does encourage snowshoe use on all of its trails although walkers, runners and bicyclists are not permitted.

Special Olympics Japan athlete Yoshikazu Niguchi, 17, clinched a gold medal in the 3K cross country finals at the 2005 World Winter Games. Higuchi was evacuated from his home when his village was hit hard by an earthquake in October 2004, and couldn't train for two months because his coach's house had been destroyed. Higuchi said the experience made him feel even more strongly that he wanted to bring a gold medal back home to make people around him happy. [Photo by Kishimoto] Cross Country Skiing is a winter sport which promotes superior physical conditioning while providing enjoyment for athletes of all ages. Special Olympics cross country skiing events are designed to be appropriate for athletes of every ability level. Individual events offered in cross country skiing range from the 500 meter race to the 10K. In addition to these traditional events, Special Olympics offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic cross country skiing skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events.
Special Olympics athletes can also participate in a Unified Sports® cross country skiing relay event.

    http://www.trappfamily.com/skicenter/index.php
Johannes von Trapp, President of Trapp Family Lodge, was the visionary behind the opening of America's first cross-country ski center at the Trapp Family Lodge in the winter of 1968-69. It was the first time cross-country ski trails, instruction and equipment sales and rentals were offered at one location.
In "those early years" the two-mile road uphill to the Trapp Family Lodge was unpaved. The Lodge had 27 rooms and the Ski Center was located in a small shed. There was no grooming equipment, ski trails were packed by skiers. Tin can lids served as trail markers.
    The Ski Center Today
The garage that once held the wooden skis has been replaced by a contemporary lodge with a retail shop and equipment rentals (including our Fischer "demo" program). 45km of groomed trails and 100km of back-country trails make the ski center Stowe's largest - suitable for all ages and abilities.
Be sure to make the exhilarating trip (on skis or snowshoes) to the Slayton Pasture Cabin where soup, sandwiches, hot chocolate and homemade cookies are served fireside.

    http://www.vermontvacation.com/recreation/xcskiing.asp
f you're a cross country skier - or are thinking of learning - Vermont is the place to be this year.
Vermont holds a key place in U.S. ski history. The first alpine ski lift in America was in Woodstock, and many Vermont Olympians have lifted ski medals on the podium. Cross country skiing caught on at the Trapp Family Lodge and telemark skiing began its revival here.
Vermont is home to the first U.S. Olympic gold medal winner in nordic skiing, Bill Koch, as well as outstanding alpine skiers such as Betsy Snite, Andrea Meade, Suzy Chaffee, Billy Kidd and several members of the Cochrane family. The Green Mountain State is a haven for ski apostles of all tastes and experience levels. As snowshoeing has caught fire again, thanks to the folks at Tubbs Snowshoe, many of our cross country centers have added terrain just for snowshoeing. You'll find that staff here bring a lot of experience and enthusiasm to your vacation, whether it's pioneering new ways to teach cross country skiing and leading back country snowshoe treks. More than 20 alpine ski resorts and almost 50 cross-country touring centers dot the state. With 4,500 skiable acres, 900 trails and 150 lifts, Vermont skiing accommodates every level from the advanced racer to the training toddler, from quiet cross country jaunts on groomed trails to hiking in the powder deep into the woods. Vermont is the place to discover the joy of cross country skiing.

    Injury studies in XC skiing
One of the main problems in accurately assessing nordic ski injuries is the lack of data specifically relating to them! Very few studies have looked at XC injuries alone compared to the masses of publications on alpine ski injuries. One of the reasons is that, by the sport's very nature, its participants are often spread out far and wide in the hills unlike alpine skiers who are concentrated in a downhill resort. This makes identification and follow-up of injured nordic skiers much more difficult. It also means that studies that do track down injured XC skiers are likely to fall into one of two patterns - firstly - hospital based studies which will be biased towards those who only suffer major injury and thus come to hospital attention with many minor injuries that don't slipping through the net.
