Bushwalking on skis " is a hobby where skiers tackle trails of various lengths and difficulties. Some skiers stay out for extended periods using tents and equipment similar to bushwalkers/hikers, whereas others take relatively short trips from ski resorts on maintained trails. As a sport , cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group and it (along with rowing and swimming) is one of the sports that burn the most calories per hour in execution. Modern cross-country ski competition is experiencing a revolution that is resulting in greater compatibility with audiences which began with the addition of the Sprint event to the

Northwest ITBEC
Cross Country Skiing in Northwest Wisconsin
Northwest Wisconsin is a region rich in Nordic skiing tradition and history and blessed with some of the best cross country ski trails in the country. Not only are there literally hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails, but they represent a wide range of family-oriented to athletically challenging experiences in a setting of incredible natural beauty. With the region’s strong Scandinavian heritage, it was only natural that Nordic skiing took root in northwest Wisconsin. Farmers, loggers and settlers of Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish extraction used cross country skis for work and recreation dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. Much of the area’s "modern" Nordic skiing heritage can be attributed to the late Tony Wise and the development of Telemark Resort in Cable. Wise was one of those larger than life characters whose accomplishments helped elevate cross country skiing to a much higher level of awareness in the Midwest and perhaps the country. He was the former owner of Telemark Resort which became one of the first downhill ski areas in the Midwest in 1947. As such, it quickly became a hot spot for winter sports in the area. Wise recognized the potential for cross country skiing at Telemark; a system of trails was laid out and Telemark began to make its mark in the world of cross country skiing. Nordic Skiing
BIATHLON
Biathlon was introduced in Innsbruck in 1988 (for athletes with a physical disability). In 1992, athletes with a visual impairment were also able to compete in Biathlon. The competition is open to athletes with a physical disability and blindness/visual impairment. It consists of a 7.5km route divided into three 2.5km stages. Between the two stages athletes must hit two targets located at a distance of 10 metres. Each miss is penalized by an increase in the overall route time. The most important success factor lies in the capability of alternating the skills of physical endurance and shooting accuracy during the competition. Athletes with blindness/visual impairment are assisted by acoustic signals, which depending on signal intensity, indicate when the athlete is on target. The sport is governed by the IPC with co-ordination by the IPC Nordic Skiing Technical Committee following the modified rules of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
Cross-Country Skiing appeared at the 1976 Winter Games in –rnsk¶ldsvik, Sweden. The competition is open to athletes with a physical disability and blindness/visual impairment. Depending on functional disability, a competitor uses a sit-ski, a chair equipped with a pair of skis. Athletes with blindness/visual impairment compete in the event with a sighted guide. Male and female athletes compete in short distance, middle distance and long distance (ranging from 2.5km to 20km) or participate in a team relay using classical or free techniques. Cross Country Skiing is governed by the IPC with co-ordination by the IPC Nordic Skiing Technical Committee following modified rules of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and in 2006, is practiced by athletes in 24 countries.

Home Events Info Conditions ... Snow Shoeing Welcome to the Wolverine Nordic Ski Club We are a non profit group that promotes nordic skiing in and around Gogebic County, which is located in Michigan's upper peninsula near the town of Ironwood. Our location, in the middle of the Lake Superior snow belt called Big Snow Country, provides us with snow that tends to arrive earlier, pile deeper, and last longer than anywhere else in the Midwest! Abundant snow, coupled with the natural rolling terrain in our northern hardwood forest, makes for a wonderful winter experience. So bring your skis or snowshoes and give us a try. Our trail system consists of five different loops that provide 24 kilometers of skiing for both striders and skaters. We operate on a donation basis and since all of our funding comes from memberships and donations, we ask that you please remember us when you pass by the donation boxes located at all major trailheads and our chalet. All of our grooming is performed by volunteers but the machines and the fuel they use cost quite a bit. Should you ever wish to get in touch with us, simply our chalet at 906-932-0347 and leave a message, or email at
