Hoop Takraw InternationalBasketball.com Special Feature By Garo Salibian On: Hoop Takraw Takraw Lot Huang / Thai Basketball Here is an excerpt from "A Traveler's Guide to Thailand" by the Tourism Authority of Thailand about the fascinating and versatile game Takraw. Of course what is known most internationally is Sepak Takraw (Kick Volleyball). What caught our attention though was a brief paragraph about "Takraw Lot Huang" called "Hoop Takraw" or "Thai Basketball". It said Hoop Takraw was one of the most popular forms of Takraw in Thailand!! The excerpt says: "One of the most difficult of all acts is seen in a game of "hoop takraw", The player makes a hoop of his arms behind his back, and kicks the ball with his heels through the hoop in such a way that it also passes through a hoop suspended in the air. (If you groan at the thought better not try it). "Hoop takraw" seems to be the most popular version of takraw in Thailand. A team usually consists of seven players (there can be no less than six) who stand at the perimeter of a circle. During a 30 minute period, the players cooperate with each other to earn a high score. Hoops are suspended over the centre and the players must hit the ball through them. Successive teams try to surpass the previous score. Takraw Lot Huang (Hoop Takraw) competition usually takes places at Sanam Luang during the summer season (February to April)"

Diving Golf Tennis Thai Boxing ... Footwork is the secret of the superior player. The game is common in various versions in most parts of Southeast Asia. But perhaps nowhere is it played with the enthusiasm and vigor as in Thailand where it is seen throughout the country in the courtyards of Wats and on fairgrounds. Particularly skilled players can be observed in Bangkok at the Phramane Ground (Sanam Luang), across from the Grand Palace. There are certain basic rules to takraw as a competition sport but it is often played without scoring and the participants just enjoy putting on a good show . While to the Western observer, it seems to be similar to volleyball, only one takraw version (called net takraw or sepak takraw ) has a similar game philosophy - to hit the ground in the field of the opposing team. In most other versions, the scoring is rather similar to gymnastics. Points are given for the skill with which

Homepage My Country Takraw (Wicker-Ball Game) Takraw is a ball made of rattan, woven into a shape about 5 to 6 inches in diameter. In itself it is a work of art that is admired by the lovers of folk art. The Takraw game is basically an outdoor game that is easy to play but difficult to master. A player can use his foot, head, knees, shoulders, or elbows to hit the ball. Commonly there are three kinds of the takraw game. They are Takraw Wong (Circle takraw), Takraw Lot Huang (Hoop takraw) and Takraw Takhai (Net takraw). These are some pictures from the Asian Games In Takraw Wong (Circle takraw) about 5 to 6 players stand in a circle and try to keep the ball in the air as long as they can by using nine parts of their body (2 feet, two knees, two elbows, two shoulders and a head) to deliver the ball. This type of Takraw aims at self-enjoyment, as well as for the entertainment of others. The players may display skills in fancy kicks and balancing. Takraw Lot Huang (Hoop Takraw) is a competitive game that can be played by many teams with not less than six players in each team. The players in each team take turns hitting the ball into a basket hoisted about six meters from the ground. Each team has forty minutes to play ball and send it into the basket as many times as possible. Scoring is based on the basket shots and also the manner of hits. All hits have different scores depending on their degree of difficulties. The team with the highest score is the winner.

A Wicker ball game called Takraw.
The 'Takraw' or wicker ball is made of nine to eleven rattans weaved loosely into a round-shaped and hollow ball. It is 5 to 6 inches in diameter and weighs 160 to 180 grams.
The original circle type takraw is the popular game that people play for fun. It usually is not regarded as a competitive sport. The game begins as a team of 6 to 10 persons stand in a circle about 25 metres in diameter in diameter. All the players have to do is keep the ball airborne for as long as possible. The winner is selected from the team when points are scored by adding the smallest number of ground hits during the game. The exciting and competitive from of takraw, which is one of the disciplines the Southest Asian Games, is called Sepak Takraw, or net takraw.
Net takraw is played by two teams of three players eash. Each team confronts each other across a net, 2.5 m above ground across the centre of a 20 by 44 feet court. Similar to badminton, the object of the game is to ground the ball on the opponents side of the net.
The modern technique of the game is very much like volleyball, the crown of the head and the feet being used above net height to smash the ball into the opposite court.

Sepak takraw was almost definitely based on the Chinese game of cuju (a name which also means "kick ball"). The sport would have been brought in through early trade and had already become popular in Malaysia and Thailand by the early 1400s. Back then it was called Takraw in Thai or Sepak Raga (literally "kick rattan ball", because the ball is made of rattan) in Malay and played mainly by men and boys standing in a circle, kicking the ball back and forth between them.

    WHAT IS SEPAK TAKRAW ?
JAPANESE ENGLISH WARNING This page is being translated from Japanese by using the translation software. Approve it though it thinks that there is an a little funny expression. Do you know Sepak Takraw?
    Background and History
Sepal Takraw was created by the royal family of Malaysia about 500 years ago. The name itself comes from two languages. Sepak is "kick" in Malay, and Takraw is the "ball" in Thai. When it is born, It looked like Japanese "Kemari", and some became a circle, and a pole was kicked, and the number of times was being competed in.
It looks very similar to the Japanese traditional game, "kemari" where the players form a loose circle and the number of times the ball is kicked before it touches the ground is counted. In 1965 the game was unified into the present volleyball style with the addition of a net and the adoption of international rules.
    Game
The court and the net height and size are identical to those used in badminton and each team has three players. The rules are very similar to those in volleyball , with the following five important exceptions
    • The use of hands is not permitted.

    18. Basic Rules & How To Play
A spike is much more difficult in sepak takraw than volleyball, because slamming the ball down hard means getting your feet above the net.

Sepak takraw is played between two teams of three players; the left inside, right inside and back. The court is about the same size as a badminton court (20 by 44 feet) and the net is 1.52 metres high. Traditionally balls were hand-woven from bamboo or rattan, but most modern ones are synthetic. Basic rules and scoring are similar to volleyball. Each team is allowed a maximum of three touches of the ball to get it back over the net to the other side without letting it touch the ground. The first team to score either 15 or 21 points, depending on the rules in play, wins the set. The team that prevails in two sets wins the match. Play starts when the server is tossed the grapefruit-sized ball by a teammate while keeping one foot in a small 'serving circle'. He then must kick the ball over the net with the other foot. After that, volleyball rules pretty much apply, except for the fact that the ball can't be touched by the hands or arms. Top takraw players have to combine great foot-eye coordination with quickness, anticipation, power, flexibility, and acrobatic skills.

    Takraw Anyone?
Posted In: Sports . By Brent and Tawm If you asked anyone what Canada's national sport was, people would be quick to say hockey. If you asked anyone what America's national sport was, most would probably say baseball (at least that is what I would answer). If you asked most people what Thailand's national sport was, most people would say Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) although the only sport most people care about it football. No not the CFL or the NFL, Thais don't even know what that is, but English Premeir League. Since coming to Thailand, not being able to follow other sports has been one of the hardest adjustments to make. I have always been a huge sports fan, especially basketball and football but since coming to Thailand, the only sport that gets any coverage is soccer.
Last month, the Asian Games were on TV (a competition similar to the Olypmics except only Asian countries can attend). As I watched the games, I fell in love with takraw. These athletes were amazing watching them fly across the court. Thailand is the best in the world at this game and if it was up to me, it would be an Olypmic event. Takraw is a sport where soccer meets volleyball. The rules are similar to volleyball, each team is seperated by a net and each side has 3 hits to get the ball made of bamboo over the net. Takraw is played on a court the same size as badminton and the net is the same height as a badminton net. The only difference between takraw and volleyball is that in takraw, you can use any part of your body except your hands and arms. Just like volleyball, someone on the team is the designated spiker and they do backflips to spike the ball over the net. It was totally awesome.
