What Is A Mountainboard?
Mountainboards are a combination of a snowboard and a mountain bike. It's a board with bindings that has tires and a suspension on the bottom. The tires and suspension are really what make mountainboards so cool. They can be used anywhere - paved streets, dirt roads, sand dunes, grassy ski slopes or rocky terrain. You can even use mountainboards on a BMX track or in a skatepark . The possibilities are endless but freeways and through the mall aren't recommended (those fat, slobby mall security guys are always lookin' to bust someone.)
Mountainboard Safety
If you're just starting out on a mountainboard , you should definitely wear all the proper safety gear (it's much more painful wiping out on rocks or dirt than it is on snow) and get a board that comes with a braking system . For minimum injury and maximum fun , it's recommended you wear a helmet , knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, gloves and a pair of sneakers with strong ankle support. For your first few rides, it's also a good idea to

Greenwheelz 3 2005
The weather didn't look too good, but we headed down to the Ardennes anyway. First for a (short) walk in the beautifull area around Viroinval. Then we headed to 'Oignies en Thiérache' for the Greenwheelz 3 event, the start of the belgian championship. The weather turned out to be great here, and the slope was looking great. It looked like they had at least a full week without rain. The guys cleared another, steaper slope (but whithout a lift) and a boardercross route between the trees. Because of the event, there was a lot more people around, with more action on the jumps. Check out the action pics
The mountainboard guys opened up another ski-slope in the Ardennes for the summer season. No longer in Trois Ponts, but in a place called 'Oignies en Thiérache' (Viroinval), well for this month anyway. It was already almost 2pm, but the weather was great, so we went ahead anyway. The place is past Charleroi and Philippeville, so about a 2,5 hours drive from Brugge. In the end we did have some trouble finding the place, and it was already 5pm when we arrived. No problem, the lift would be open 'till late. It had been another year since I last went down with my board, so it's always a bit adjusting to it again (as with skiing/snowboarding). The first part of the slope is kind of slow, but the second part goes pretty fast, fast enough to reach the end of the slope and the lift. The lift was very muddy halfway up, which was kind of hard to control your board. The first few times around got me of the lift, and quite dirty.

Developed by garage engineers, the first mountainboard experiments combined short snowboards, with skateboard trucks and lawnmower wheels for that knobby off-road feel. Since then, the boards have become smaller, the wheels bigger, and the suspension systems more advanced. See for yourself... The Story The Photos The Animations The Videos ... The Thrill of Mountainboarding Mountainboarding is an adrenaline sport that combines the best aspects of snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding. It offers the thrill of snowboarding on a variety of terrains during the off-season; long after the snow has melted. With mountainboards, outdoor enthusiasts are no longer restricted by weather patterns, limited types of terrain, or icy or windy conditions. The rapid growth of boarding sports in the U.S., from snowboarding to wakeboarding, yields 20 million eager sideways-sliding consumers, all yearning for a sport that is yearlong in nature, limitless in terrain and places to ride. Mountainboards are fitted with bindings and come in a variety of models, depending on the rider’s skill level and riding preference. The key difference from a snowboard is in the tires and suspension. Mountainboards come with a comprehensive selection of off-road tires and high performance suspension for virtually any kind of terrain, ranging from paved streets, BMX Tracks, dirt roads, grassy ski slopes and even rocky terrain. MBS mountainboards can be equipped with a reverse V brake, the company’s proprietary technology. This is especially helpful for beginners who are learning how to ride as well as advanced riders who prefer more extreme terrain such as steep single track.

A mountainboard is a kind of skateboard on steroids. The decks are big, the wheels are rubber, and your feet fit into bindings. When we mountainboard in Southern California, we notice that our boards ride differently when the tire pressure is higher or lower. Sometimes the wrong pressure makes us feel out of control. Our question: Which tire pressure will let us maintain speed and control through turns?
We set up a minicourse, and rode it at three different tire pressures: 10 psi, 25 psi, and 60 psi (or pounds per square inch). The more psi, the harder the tire; the less psi, the squishier. We recorded the time to complete the course, and reported how much control we had.
The lowest tire pressure gave us our slowest times, but good control. The medium pressure allowed the board to go faster, but we felt we had less control. To our surprise, the highest pressure did not give us our fastest run, probably because we felt completely out of control. It was obvious that tire pressure really does make a difference, and that you have to choose the pressure that matches the kind of ride you want to have.
  • Design a test to find out what tire pressure is best for performing bike stunts. Is it better to have mushy tires, or hard ones? Does it depend on the trick, or the style of riding?

Mountain Boarding is a fun, exciting, and PAINFULL sport. It is a new sport that needs more popularity among poeple. This sport was created by snowboarders with no snow to board on. The solution: snowboards with wheels. Basics of Mountain Boarding
The mountain board works much like a snowboard. Unlike a snowboard, it has wheels and hurts alot more when you fall. You turn by shifting your weight to either side of the board. Always remember to keep your balance and not to turn to far. Jumping is a little more difficult than turning. If you have a leash pull up on it and do small wheelies. This will also help on bumpy courses. Once you get this down you can try to jump. When you pull up on the leash also pull up your leg to lift the back. While in the air straighten yourself out so your level with the ground. When you land keep your knees bent so you won't break your leg. Ryan's Mountainboard Page
The main tricks that people do on mountainboards are grabs. There is a grab index were you can tell where to grab the board to do a certain trick. Some trick tips: goin over jumps, indy grab, tail grab, nose grab, bunny hop 180, gutter jump, 180, frontside 360, backscratcher, Method, boneing out your grabs, stopping, indy 180, blind 360/Backside 360, FS boardslide, going down stairs, 360 to indy grab, Nose grab to fakie, Roast beef, Crossbone method, Japan air

Mountain Boarding
A bit of a clumsy name for a sport, I'll readily admit. Mountain boarding ? Also known as 'all-terrain boarding', or perhaps 'grass boarding'. Or pretty much anything you like, noone's heard of it so you'll have to explain what you mean anyway. So what is it? Well, imagine a skateboard, but made longer, and instead of having small plastic wheels mounted underneath, put a springy metal chassis underneath to support big metal tyred wheels at each corner. OK? Right, now put footstraps on it, find a grassy hill, and launch yourself down the fall line. But I recommend you get some elbow / knee / wrist / head protection first, because this is going to hurt.

Closely resembling skateboarding in that riders use a wheeled board, albeit with footbindings and larger sturdier wheels. They also like snowboarders, turn across the hill to check their speed, although some boards are fitted with brakes. Carried out on a specialised track or anywhere the landowner gives permission, the discipline falls into three distinct categories - downhill (on a predesigned track,) freestyle (jumps, ramps tricks etc) and freeriding (basically, find a hill and ride it).
Be careful though, with experienced riders attaining speeds of over 50 mph on downhill runs, a sense of balance is essential!

The full course line is about a 1/4 mile long from the very top to the bottom. The lower section (the most technical with it's rhythm sections, table tops, and wicked jumps) starts the rider at the upper table top which drops into the first rythm section followed by our split-top. The course then breaks off into two lines, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate line starts from the lower side of the split-top and drops into a small kicker followed by the last rythm section. The advanced line drops from the upper side of the split-top to our advanced table top followed by a four foot kicker. The course ends with a wall ride/kicker combo which ends at the beggining of the tree course. Lessons: Instructors start out teaching the basics of mountainboarding such as ride stance, balance, and board control. As the rider becomes more comfortable, progressive instruction is based on rider's skill and performance of "ride trials". Ride trials are a series of excercises that accurately judge ability level so that riders stay safe. Technical Free-Ride: Mountainboarding in its finest form, free-ride. Free-riding is all about boarding un-touched terrain on the mountains. During this session, the instructor takes riders off-trail to carve their own path over rough terrain.
