Unicycling Whiteface Mountain
by Steve Relles After getting permission from the race director to enter a one-wheeler, I signed up for the Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike Race, an 8-mile race gaining 3,522 vertical feet, which took place on June 11, 2005. My wife Rose and brother-in-law Andrew subsequently decided to run the Whiteface Uphill Footrace on the same day, so both families plus my folks visiting from Florida stayed in a rental chalet and made it a family weekend. Race day was humid and nearly 90 degrees at the 5:30 pm start time. I was in the first of four waves, but at the start signal, I bungled my first free-mount. The crowd gasped and murmured, but my second mount succeeded and they cheered as I set off to try to become the first person to unicycle up Whiteface Mountain. The first three miles are an eight to nine percent continuous grade and we rode facing into the sweltering sun. Occasionally I passed cooler, mist-laden air pouring off a roadside waterfall, but it was a tease, only to be replaced by the crushing heat again. Within a dishearteningly few minutes my thighs started burning from the hot, relentless climb and I had the sinking feeling that there was no way I would be able to reach the three-mile marker, let alone all eight miles to the peak 3,500 feet above. My searing quads forced me to slacken my pace. For unicyclists, this means pedaling more slowly, which requires better balance. At 1.5 miles into the race I had my first of many unplanned dismounts, and decided to rest for a minute. Mounting facing uphill is difficult, so after my thigh pain diminished, I remounted facing across the road and turned upward to face my demons.

Mountain Unicycling or it's a miracle I wasn't injured.
I went for a round of Mountain Unicycling(Muni) today at Bukit Timah(BT). Was supposed to go with a friend but he pulled out at the last minute due to "not feeling well". YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!
Anyway, things were going fine, just ambling along, when all of a sudden it started raining. Well not exactly all of a sudden for the sky did look a bit dark the whole morning. But you know how it is with rain. The sky just opens up. All I can say it was a mircale I came away unscath. The track was a mess of mud and running water, my glasses kept fogging up, keeping me from seeing the road. Ugh.. I ended up near blind. But someone must have been looking after me (Unicycle God perhaps).
Another thing I would like to mention is that lots of mountain bikers were there. Some looked at me as if I was a joke while others went "You make me look like a sissy". Well there are all sorts of people out there. Muni ain't easy but it sure is challenging and rewarding.

Unique Unicycles
Tallest
Sem Abrahams rode a 35.00 m (114.8 ft) tall unicycle, Pontiac, Michigan on January 29, 2004. He has a web-site dedicated to the feat including photos and video. He also documents previous world record attempts, including that of Steve McPeak in 1980, who was listed in the Guinness Book records, as riding a unicycle of 31 m (101 ft, 9 inches) despite some doubt cast on the validity of the attempt. Guinness also lists the tallest one without safety equipment as 31 feet. Ken Fuchs described some of the attempts in more detail. A 1981 article in The Globe claimed the record was 35 feet, by a guy from New Jersey, who broke a large number of bones falling from it onto Astroturf at the Giants stadium. Chaz Marquette has made a name for himself, riding a 22' giraffe. Pictures and video of him riding in front of a basketball crowd is available from his web-site
Largest Unicycle Wheel
David Moore built "Intense Hortense", a unicycle with a wheel diameter of 73 inches (185 cm), which was ridden by Steve Gordon in Southern California. Sem Abrahams is pictured riding a very large wheel - it might be the the same one. Notice the blocks under his feet to make riding more practical.

    Making of the shirt:
The idea for this shirt came to me while sitting in a sub shop on the first day of the 1999 National Unicycle Convention in Washington. I was looking at a little banner that had the various beverage logos on it that the place sold and the idea popped into my head.

    Kris Holm Interview
Courtesy of Kris Holm By: Simon Kris Holm is a true pioneer for the sport of unicycling . He's taking the sport to new levels as he continues to push the envelope with his stunts and tricks . A former world champion, Kris has unicycled all over the globe. Simon sat down to chat with this legend sponsored link Simon: How did you get involved in unicycling?
Kris Holm: When I was 11, I saw a street performer playing a violin while unicycling. I thought that was pretty amazing because I also play the violin , so I asked for a unicycle for my 12th birthday. That was in 1986. It turned out that while both violin and unicycling are difficult, putting the two together is actually quite easy. So I looked for more challenge, discovered off-road riding , and it just grew from there. Simon: What was the specific appeal to the sport that made you want to get better?

www.derf.net thoughts random thoughts mountain unicycle random thoughts unicycle tue 2005-feb-22 17:21:38 pst permalink So last Sunday I went on a 16-mile mountain unicycle ride (or "muni ride" as those in the know call it, and yes we know that makes it sound like we're riding the bus in San Francisco). I borrowed Seth 's muni, since he couldn't come that day. I actually got it from him a week in advance, so that I could get used to it by riding it around campus for the week, in place of my (non-mountain) uni that I normally ride as my primary means of transport around campus. Seth's muni is a KH24 (2004 model) (I mention that it's the 2004 model to distinguish from the fairly different new 2005 model). The noteworthy differences versus my Miyata and longer cranks I forget, is leverage linear? i.e. do you just compare the (radius of wheel / radius of crank) ratios? Hm, that would mean that this is a lower gear...) So as I said, last week I was riding Seth's KH24 around campus. I found that the extra travel of the bigger wheel didn't really make much difference to me (either good or bad), but that the long cranks were just insane your whole leg is flying around these immense circles. Plus, since it rained, I discovered that the up-spray on the backs of my legs was much worse than I'm used to, probably mostly because of the bigger wheel, though perhaps also the knobblier tire. And I found that with such a big uni, I felt more self-conscious about bringing it with me inside places (I sometimes lock it up outside, sometimes bring it in with me, depending on the building). Anyway, so I wasn't real thrilled about it, and was still thinking about a trials uni.

    Goal Setting: Setting and Identifying
    January 24th 2008
    Background to Identify Goals
Every makes decisions every day in life and everyday those decisions are based on the pain and pleasure that you belief that choice will lead to. That is exactly what leads to your decisions and its helps to really recognize this and to use it to your advantage in goal setting. The process outlined here is based on using those beliefs and really understanding the impact of them in the sense of pain and pleasure to you which will help to better identify the great goals for you!
Step 1: Brainstorm a Categorized Idea List
You first need to have some ideas and areas to explore your goals. Its great to simply do a brain dump here and write down everything that comes to mind. It helps to keep things categorized, and I use these categories for goal setting:
