Mountain Unicycling
Early in 1999, when first we heard about mountain unicycling (MUni), we thought there were some nuts out there. But after taking a ski lift to the top of a mountain at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, and riding down the bike trails, we were hooked. If one could combine the sports of snow-skiing and mountain biking, it would be MUni.
The word MUni was coined in the UK by Duncan Castling. It's now a registered trademark of the Pashley Cycle Company in England.
George Peck, a soft-spoken magistrate living in Seward, Alaska, is credited with giving birth to the sport of MUni.

Tune in to OREGON FIELD GUIDE on the stations of Oregon Public Broadcasting Television on Thursday, July 6 at 8:30pm (and Sunday, July 9 at 6:30pm) to see how it's done, who's doing it and what it takes to keep a one wheeled machine from careening out of control on a rocky forest trail. Pop quiz: What’s the best way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, challenge your body and mind, and really, deeply astonish everyone you pass on the SB trails? The answer: mountain unicycling You read that right. Mountain unicycling — muni to the initiated — is a sport that’s been around for about twenty-five years. Unicyclist lore tells us that the daring and intrepid George Peck, a judge from Alaska, began the sport when he strapped on some rudimentary protective gear made from common household items (read: duct tape and sponge) and hit the trail on his street unicycle. A video of his feats made it to a group of mountain bikers in Santa Cruz, who were, understandably, astounded at the sight. And so the legend began. Today, no one need tape sponges to vulnerable parts of his (or occasionally her) anatomy, or risk their safety on a unicycle designed for street riding. Specialized, mass-produced gear and unicycles with reinforced frames are now available for mountain unicyclists. Like any extreme sport, mountain unicycling even has its own star; Kris Holm, widely (well, relatively speaking) known as the best munier in the world, Holm also sponsors a line of gear. W HY the red unicycle was left in the Seward, Alaska, dump and what inspired George Peck's wife, Carol, to bring it home are both unclear. "I'm a salvager and recycler," is all she will say. "She's a dump rat," Peck says. Carol put the unicycle in the garage, and Peck found it there. This was almost fourteen years ago. His life hasn't been the same since.
"I glom on to things," Peck says. "He gets obsessed," Carol says. Peck taught himself to ride the red unicycle no books, no instructors. He practiced daily for more than a month before he could wobble up and down his driveway. Then he attempted to take the unicycle onto the roads. Riding a unicycle is as precarious as it looks the "cone of balance," as Peck calls it, is extraordinarily precise. A pebble can be enough to put you on your back. So can a patch of sand or a gust of wind or a crack in the pavement. This may be why the red cycle was tossed into the dump: Seward is possibly the worst spot on the planet in which to ride a unicycle. The place is all sand and gusts and cracks, not to mention ice and snow and logs and boulders and mountains.

Peck learned to ride his unicycle under all conditions. He discovered how to make the cycle hop, and he honed the skill until he could pop over logs two feet in diameter. He figured out how to power through boulder fields, how to jump up and over picnic tables, how to turn in ankle-deep mud. He became skilled at riding in dried-out riverbeds, across frozen lakes, up mountain trails, and through wind-crusted snow. This is clearly not what unicycles were designed to do. When the red unicycle fell apart, Peck drove to Anchorage and bought a new one. When that broke, he ordered another. After a dozen more were destroyed, he began designing his own.

But, as he reaches the top, the wiry college student doesn't emit the usual growl of victory, nor even pause for a daredevil view down at gnarly, 3,000-foot pinnacles of compressed volcanic ash. Instead, he pulls the metal unicycle he's carried up the rock off his shoulder, smiles grandly, jumps on the contraption and begins to ... well ... hop. Yes, on a unicycle on the precipice of a rocky outcrop. Mountain unicycling 'doesn't come across as looking very possible to most people.'

This is essential mountain unicycling - aka "MUni," yet another extreme sport taken to yet another extreme. The feat isn't the end (reaching the top) but the means (hopping along it and then pedaling down). The goal of the MUnicyclist, who tends to be a daredevil, a geek, or both, is to hoist oneself upright over the gearless single wheel, pedal and/or hop over complicated terrain (which can include not just mountains and ridges but park benches, tree stumps, and hand railings), and avoid getting hurt in the series of inevitable falls.
