      Mountain Biking in New Zealand
by Philip Greenspun ; created 1992-1993 Have you ever wished you could mountain bike in California back in 1915? Only about three million people lived there then, you could drink water from mountain streams, and there weren't any police to chase after you for riding in forbidden areas. Well, stop wishing and book a flight to New Zealand. New Zealand's 3.3 million friendly citizens have conveniently packed themselves into three cities so as to leave the rest of the California-sized country to mountain bikers, sea kayakers, and hikers. You'll have mountains as spectacular as the Sierras, but with an emerald lake in front of each one and waterfalls cascading down every slope. But you won't have to throw your bike across the back of a burro, sleep with vermin and communicate using smoke signals. New Zealand has smooth roads through the mountains, charming clean social hotels that cost $6/night, and the most modern telephone system in the world. Probably the best thing about New Zealand is that people have time for each other. My first 24 hours in the country were instructive. I landed in Auckland, the nation's biggest city and transferred to the domestic terminal for a short hop to Wellington, the nation's capital. I walked to the gate feeling that something was horribly wrong. Eventually it struck me that I hadn't had to go through security-nobody has ever hijacked an airplane in New Zealand and they don't bother with metal detectors or X-rays for domestic flights.

The park is generally open from 8 until 1 hour before sunset (they open at 9 on weekdays). During the long summer days, it is only open until 8pm. They will lock the gate with your car inside, so be out on time. The trails are appropriate for intermediate to advanced riders. There are no easy trails in Skyline Park. The road up to Lake Marie is a steady easy grade, but rocky and rutted. The single track is fantastic - watch for hikers and equestrians (stop if you see a horse coming in the opposite direction unless the horse rider gives you the okay to proceed). There are some trails for hikers only. You can get a map at the kiosk. The cross country Grundig-UCI World Cup Opener was held at Skyline park in and and . For pictures go here for 97 and here for 98 To get there from the South, take the first Napa exit off Highway 29 which is Highway 221/Soscol Road. Take a right on Imola and drive to the end. http://www.wildernet.com/colorado/mtnbiking.html
Colorado Mountain Biking Guide Mountain Biking in Colorado Colorado is world renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation. Biking in a State Park , National Park or National Monument is an excellent way to experience colorado. There are hundreds of paved and unpaved roads suitable for tour bikes. Jeep roads, trails and single tracks accommodate mountain bikes. Colorado bicycling provides access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Description - Challenge yourself by going up a jeep road. Feel the adrenaline rush as you speed down a single track dodging rocks and logs along the way. Be prepared for cool evenings and hot days. Sunscreen is a must to protect you from the intense sun, particularly at high elevations. Also be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms and accompanying lightning which are a regular occurrence in the mountains in July and August. Carry lots of water as the climate is very dry. Be sure that someone knows where you are. Be extremely courteous to hikers, horseback riders and other bikers. Yield to all foot and hoof traffic. Attractions - Most of the state's mountain bike routes are located in its vast public lands managed by the US Forest Service. The

They have not updated the plan since 1982 and it may be another 25 years before it happens again. This is our opportunity to speak up and tell them we would like to see mountain bike trail around Jordan Lake. There are multiple layers of agencies involved but USACE is the primary land manager and IMBA has a national MOU with them to promote mountain biking so there is really no reason why there is no trail in almost 33,000 acres around the lake.
