Mountain Biking Basics
As you are most likely aware, biking can take on many forms, from the sleek and thin lined racing bikes, touring bikes, fat tired beach cruisers, hybrid cross designs, trickster bikes, to your stout mountain bikes equipped with shocks. There's a certain feeling with biking that's unlike any other sport. Wind rushing through your hair, zipping around the neighborhood. For most, biking also holds a strong image of childhood, innocence, family and going for a ride in the neighborhood. Even as adults, going for a bike ride still brings out that mischievous child in us. And for the truly mischievous child, there is mountain biking.
The beauty of the sport, as one rider put it, was that your whole body is riding. Your mind is alert ready for sudden changes in the trial requiring quick adjustments. Mountain biking is more aggressive than off roading, which is more like a stroll in the woods.

Welcome to the premier system of off-road bike trails
in the Midwest, located in and around the beautiful
Chequamegon National Forest region of Northwest Wisconsin.
Welcome to the adventure of mountain biking in northwest Wisconsin. The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) off-road bike trail system consists of over 300 miles of marked and mapped routes through a wilderness of striking beauty and peaceful solitude. Area cyclists have created the CAMBA system to make this vast, unique area available to everyone. We hope you enjoy the riding and join with us in preserving this resource. The CAMBA trails lie in and around the beautiful Chequamegon National Forest as well as in Bayfield and Sawyer County Forests - nearly a million acres in which to ride your fat tire bike. Of this, CAMBA has adopted an area of approximately 1,600 square miles. The system is divided into six clusters, each with one or more trail heads. An overview area map of the entire system indicating the location of each cluster as well as other ridable gravel and on-road paved routes is available. More detailed maps of each cluster with trail routes and navigational narratives are also available at area bike shops and chambers of commerce or directly from CAMBA. CAMBA's user-friendly system is designed to encourage off-road bicyclists to enjoy and explore the Chequamegon Area. Trail markings include frequent reassurance markers, intersection - "You Are Here" - markers with a corresponding land marker number on the map, and a sign board with an overview map, cluster map, and map dispenser at each trail head.

Comment now on the Lolo, Bitterroot, and Flathead forest plans to preserve mountain bike access to some of the best trails in the state.

The revised forest plans for the Lolo, Bitterroot, and Flathead National Forests will exclude mountain bikes from trails in areas that are proposed for wilderness designation. Bicycles have always been legal in these areas despite the fact that they have been proposed wilderness for many years. This change in management style is not in response to any problems caused by mountain bikes, but is a bureaucratic dictate from the Washington office. Our use of these areas has been so subtle over the years that the Forest Service does not realize how much we ride these trails and how important they are to Montana mountain bikers. Now is the time for mountain bikers to speak up and let the Forest Service know that we cherish rides like Heart Lake, Monture Creek, Bluejoint Creek and Blodgett Canyon.

Name Change! - LIMB has a new name. We are now Mountain Bike Missoula! The new name is hopefully more representative of all mountain bikers in the Missoula area, regardless of whether they are downhillers, XC racers, freeriders, trials riders, urban riders, huckers, climbers, lungs with legs or chain smokers.

Yep, it may sound like swimming in the desert, but there really is hope for mountain biking fans in Central Illinois. Kickapoo State Park near Danville has allowed an organized effort to clear several trails in the northeastern section of the park for the purpose of mountain biking. The Kickapoo Mountain Bike Club was formed to lead that effort and has been hard at work since 1993. To date, the KMBC has cleared about 10 miles of beautiful, single and double track trails that are both challenging and fun. The KMBC is always in need of some good ideas or just a good set of hands to help work. IMPORTANT WINTER TRAIL INFORMATION Wednesday, 13 December 2006 When soil freezes all the moisture turns to ice crystals between the particles of the soil and in clay or loam soil they are tightly packed together. As the moisture freezes the crystals expand and tear the clay apart shattering it, then as it thaws the soil become more porous and allows more moisture in. This is repeated with every successive thaw.
In Indiana we can get as many as 100 freeze thaw cycles in a season.
