Punishing Race Is an Enticing Lost Cause
By Eli Saslow WARTBURG, Tenn. Alone, running and hiking in the mountains for almost 50 hours, Brian Robinson's mind had slowly unraveled. He had run through two sleepless nights, through fog and sideways rain, through thornbushes and over rattlesnake dens. Now, with 80 miles finished and 20 left in the world's toughest footrace, Robinson no longer could differentiate between real and imaginary. Around each corner, he thought he heard picnickers laughing at him. At midnight. In the remote woodlands of Tennessee. Robinson stumbled into the Barkley Marathons' final aid station at 8 a.m., with black hollows surrounding his eyes. His hands trembled, a result of the five caffeine pills he had swallowed. Dozens of scratches covered his arms and legs. His dry-fit shirt was dingy and frayed. The slightest gust of wind knocked Robinson from side to side, so he leaned against a tree. A half-dozen friends and fellow runners all of whom had quit long ago rushed to prepare Robinson for the final section of the race. Two people changed his shoes. One person sponged his forehead. His friend, Wendell Doman, started cooking six eggs as Robinson eyed his watch.

Top 26 Marathons in North America
There's a Marathon for Every Taste.
These Races Are the Best of the Best.
Participation in marathon running in North America has grown approximately 10 percent per year for the past five years. The steady increase has had a profound effect on existing marathons, swelling the entry list of some formerly modest races to the point where they must, like megamarathons, set entry limits. The Rosetta stone of the current growth in marathoning was the 1996 "100th" running of the Boston Marathon, which created a qualifying frenzy that affected hundreds of other marathons. When Runner's World magazine declared the St. George Marathon in Utah as one of the best races in which to get a qualifying time for Boston, the organizers were thrown into a spin by the torrent of entries. The huge marathons continue to grow, turning away thousands of supplicants. The mid-sized marathons grow steadily. Small marathons quickly grow to mid-sized marathons, occasionally outstripping the organizers' (and the courses') abilities to accommodate the new runners. On the fringe there are other marathons, remote and unheralded, that manage in the midst of what appears to many to be madness to hold their own and maintain the unique style and substance they've exhibited for years, sometimes for decades.

There are a couple of reasons why I call this the "Eclectic" Marathon Page. My selection of events is eclectic - they aren't all strictly marathons. There are a number of "ultra" events, a few 26 mile walking events, plus a few shorter races that seemed interesting when I encountered them. The second point is the arrangement of the geographical units. If you look at the United States , you will find all the states listed alphabetically. On the Canada page, the provinces and territories are listed from west to east. For the rest of the world, the arrangement snakes around. It starts off with some Polar events (North and South), followed by Northern/Scandinavian countries, the British Isles Western Europe Eastern Europe , the Middle East Africa (North to South), Australia and New Zealand Asia , then hops over to the Caribean and Central America , then South America , and finally a very isolated race on St. Helena

Federer, Hewitt survive 5-set marathons
Email this Email the Editor Print Digg this ... Add to del.icio.us MELBOURNE, Australia - The drama started with a rare five-setter for Roger Federer. Then Lleyton Hewitt carried on almost to dawn.
Federer needed 4 hours, 27 minutes to beat 49th-ranked Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 in an extended afternoon match that pushed back the night session at least two hours.
Federer had won 30 straight sets at Melbourne Park since dropping the first in the 2006 final against Baghdatis. The Swiss star had lost only six games in his first two matches this year.
David Nalbandian and Juan Carlos Ferrero stepped back on the same court to begin the Sunday schedule just over 6 hours after Hewitt and Baghdatis walked off.
Former No. 1 Ferrero beat 10th-seeded Nalbandian 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in a third-round match postponed by rain Saturday. In another third-rounder, No. 5 David Ferrer beat American Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. Ferrero will play Ferrer in the fourth round.

These endurance contests offered the unemployed hopes of temporary fame, small fortune, and the opportunity to dance their cares away. Prizes ranged anywhere between $1000 to $5000, but many contestants participated solely for the promise of food and shelter. Serious competitors danced for days, even weeks at a time. The record stands at 5,148 hours and 28.5 minutes. The contestants were usually allowed a mere 15 minutes of rest for every hour of dancing. Success came to those who had the ability to keep their partner moving at all times; style was irrelevant. D ue to potential health risks, police and health officials attempted time and time again to shut down these contests.
