Movie Marathons...
By Russ Neumeier Categories: Film This past weekend, I noticed that TN T was showing one of the Lord of the Rings movies each night from Friday through Sunday. My teenager is already scheduling movie nights with her friends over the Christmas break from school. She mentioned the other day that the first person in her circle of friends to get Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At Worlds End would invite the others over for a viewing. I bought this movie the other day to complete my series....but I guess I'm a bit late. My teenager is working on having a sleep-over at another friend's house so they can do a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon – watching all three movies in a row. (I guess the friend with a movie theater room in her basement trumps my surround sound...but I digress) This entire episode made me wonder what other movie marathons are popular out in the land of the GeekDad. Let us know in the comments. Maybe next year, I should encourage her to have a Pirates movie marathon on

A B C ... XYZ "Black" Dance Marathons ( continuous motion ) or "Derbies" can be traced back to 1364 in London and became extremely popular during the depression years (1920s-30s) as many out of work people would compete for money prizes, as well as stars of some kind seeking publicity, or, basically anyone could enter these pagents of fatigue and endurance. Most of the music that was played was slow, but once or twice an hour they would pick up the beat ( called Sprints ) and they were required to dance the dance of the music, sometimes for extra cash or prizes. The general rule was you could not fall asleep, while some contests allowed one part of the team to sleep so long as the other held them up, kept in contact and / or kept moving. As time in the contest continued, resting times would go from the 1st week - half hour, 2nd week to fifteen minutes, then ten minutes, then five minutes, then three minutes to none, while some marathons would be danced sixty minutes then rest for fifteen. There were many variations, but you get the idea.
The marathon consisted of a emcee, a Band and or phonograph player, a Nurses, inhouse Doctor, a few cots, a dance floor, Contestants, Barbers, >Manicurists and Podiatrists, etcetera. Some contestants were professional dancer/actors. Not all entrants were there to win, some were placed (

Study Shows Marathons Aren’t Likely to Kill You

By GINA KOLATA Published: December 21, 2007 Worried about dropping dead if you run a marathon? Researchers in Canada say you can put your mind at ease. The risk of dying on a marathon course is twice as high if you drive it than if you run it, they find. In fact, they conclude, marathons may actually save lives: more people would die in traffic accidents if the race course had not been closed to vehicles on marathon day. (Nor was there any spillover of extra deaths on alternative routes.) Their paper is being published Friday in The British Medical Journal. As might be expected, marathon directors were pleased. The researchers admit that they cannot prove marathons saved lives. They were comparing actual deaths during marathons to expected deaths from motor-vehicle accidents based on statistics. But they add that their data certainly raise the question of whether the risk of dying in a marathon is exaggerated. So he and his colleagues decided to examine data from 26 American marathons over 30 years. They included results from 3,292,268 runners on 750 race days and 14 million hours of running. For comparison, they also examined national data on traffic fatalities, estimating how many would be expected to occur in the area on marathon day and comparing that with the number that did occur.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova pounded fellow Russian Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-0, breaking the 11th-ranked player in six of her seven service games, including one at love to finish off the match in 62 minutes. "I have always had really tough games against her," Sharapova said, "and I wanted to make sure I kept my focus all the way through." That was a good warmup for the next stage.

IT WAS HIS 30TH BIRTHDAY, and he'd started with beer and moved on to tequila shots at a bar near his home in San Francisco. Now, after midnight, an attractive young woman – not his wife – was hitting on him. This was not the life he'd imagined for himself. He was a corporate hack desperately running the rat race. The company had just bought him a new Lexus. He wanted to vomit. Karnazes resisted the urge and, instead, slipped out the bar's back door and walked the few blocks to his house. On the back porch, he found an old pair of sneakers. He stripped down to his T-shirt and underwear, laced up the shoes, and started running. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

A weekend of marathons in Rod Laver Arena By Christopher Clarey Published: January 20, 2008 document.writeln(''); MELBOURNE What was the oddest sight Sunday at the Australian Open? Not the unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga boldly reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the expense of the leader of his French generation: Richard Gasquet. Certainly not the Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova imploding against Serena Williams, glancing over at her box again and again as the unforced errors piled up as usual under pressure. No, the strangest sight on Sunday was the crowd in Rod Laver Arena filing out of the night session shortly before 10:30 p.m. with the entertainment completed.

Training tips Fuelling a marathon Warning: marathon risks Serious dangers Video : the London Marathon Quiz : test your marathon trivia Vote : could you go the whole way? Timeline of events Key Points It's a long, long way. The modern marathon is run over 26.2 miles or 42.195 km The marathon is the only discipline in athletics to have become a popular participation sport After 20 miles many inexperienced runners 'hit the wall' , an infamous experience suffered when their bodies have run out of fuel Some people find it easier to 'marathon' than others. This is partly due to their genes Born to marathon? Some people are better adapted to marathon running than others. This might be by virtue of their build, physiology or mental approach. There is one crucial feature marathon runners must have to stand a chance of competing at the highest level. The right kind of muscles. Marathon muscles There are two different kinds of fibre in muscle:
  • 'Slow twitch' fibres - these contract slowly but they can keep going for a long time 'Fast twitch' fibres - these contract quickly but are rapidly worn out
'Slow twitch' fibres are the key to successful marathon running. If a person has a preponderance of fast-twitch muscles there is no chance of him or her becoming a world-class marathoner. They might however make an ideal sprinter. The marathon runner needs to have a large proportion of slow twitch fibres in their muscles. This characteristic is largely inherited but there is some evidence that training can make a small difference to the proportions of the different fibre types. Findings suggest that a marathon runner must avoid any sprint training at distances less than 100m. Likewise sprinters must never engage in endurance exercise.
