Additonal below...
We have recently learned that Wesly Ngetich - the two-time winner of Grandma's Marathon (2007, 2005) and a top-three finisher at the Austin, Houston and Toronto Waterfront Marathons was killed in the violence in Kenya. Ngetich was apparently shot in the chest with an arrow near his hometown amidst the violence that has been ongoing since late December. From the Department Department:
We were feeling silly this morning, so are naming a few of our stories as from some "department" in our organization. We'll apologize upfront for this bit of silliness - perhaps we were just up too late covering the Dubai Marathon... From the It Couldn't Happen to a Nicer Guy Department:
Brian Mastel Promoted to Race Director of Twin Cities Marathon
The Twin Cities Marathon has announced that Brian Mastel, previously the organization's Race Operations Manager, has been promoted to Race Director - a newly created title within the organization. The promotion, in our estimation, will most likely not change Mastel's daily activities in the short term, but is a well deserved recognition of the work that Mastel has been performing and his role in the organization. TCM Executive Director, Virginia Brophy Achman, in the organization's announcement, commented on Mastel's knowledge, experience and work in developing additional events for the organization. Plus, as we've seen, everyone who knows Brian likes him...

Races make money for cities, but may be too tough for some novices
Jerry Lai / AP
Spectators watch the start of the Chicago Marathon. The brutally hot marathon that descended into disarray this weekend — with hundreds in the field of 36,000 runners vomiting or collapsing by the roadside — has raised questions about whether marathons have become too big and too greedy.
CHICAGO - There are young ones, old ones, thin ones and fat ones. Some show up in chicken suits, others in G-strings. There are highly trained athletes, of course, but also many people who look like a starting line is, well, the last place they should be. These days, big-city marathons cast an increasingly wide net, drawing tens of thousands of serious and not-so-serious runners to prestigious races in New York, Chicago, Boston and elsewhere. The incentive to draw as many people as possible is clear enough: The 26.2-mile marathons generate millions of dollars for cities that host them, as well as for the sporting-goods industry.

Wii Warm Up: Gaming marathons
Posted Jan 13th 2008 10:30AM by Chris Greenhough
Filed under: Wii Warm Up
Gaming endurance seems to be a bit of a theme this week. First, there was the story of Bill Tangeman, who racked up a quite unearthly score by playing a single round of Geometry Wars: Galaxies on his DS for 24 hours. Then, and perhaps more impressively still, we heard about these guys , who are trying to complete four Zelda games in 48 hours for charity and pizza. As we type, they're speeding through The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
You pretty much know where this is going, then: we'd like to hear about your own marathon gaming sessions. It'd be nice if these were on the Wii, but we're also happy for you to tell us about that time you spent thirteen straight hours playing the first Halo in a friend's attic. Wait, no ... that was me . Oh, the sweaty, unwashed shame of it all! Tags: geometry-wars-galaxies legend-of-zelda wwu zelda ... Comments

Marathons Cut Risk Of Fatal Vehicle Crashes
ScienceDaily (Dec. 26, 2007) See also: Millions of people take part in organised sporting events on a regular basis, yet the outcome for a few participants is sudden death. These deaths attract widespread media attention, such as the high publicity given to deaths that occur in marathon runners. In contrast, sudden deaths from motor vehicle crashes occur more than a hundred times each day in the United States alone and tend to be under-reported in the media. Yet no previous study has explored the extent to which marathons might actually decrease mortality. So researchers examined marathons throughout the US to test whether the total number of sudden deaths changed when roads were closed to traffic and opened to marathon running. They randomly selected 26 established marathons involving more than 3 million participants over a period of 30 years. Each marathon had at least 1,000 participants and took place on United States roadways from 1975 to 2004. Sudden cardiac deaths following each marathon were recorded and compared to motor vehicle deaths during the same hours one week before and one week after each marathon. The same comparisons were then replicated for state counties that were outside the marathon route to check for spillover in traffic flow.
