NATURBAHN LUGE: You've seen luge sleds rocketing down ice-glazed tubes during the Winter Olympicsthat's Kunstbahn (or Artificial Track ) luge. Naturbahn (or Natural Track ) luge is even more exciting because the track winds down a natural , unrefrigerated hill, bordered by boards and snow banks. A Naturbahn luge sled is similar to an old-fashioned wooden sled with metal runners. Naturbahn athletes steer the sled with their feet, hands, and bodies. They use their bodies to speed up, slow down, and steer the sled around the corners of the icy track. Naturbahn luge is a unique sport, and exciting for athletes and spectators.
OPEN FOR PUBLIC SLIDING AND EVENTS:
Come to the place Olympic luge hopefuls train, and experience for yourself the thrill of skimming down an ice-covered track aboard a luge sled. The bottom section of the track (the bottom 1/6) is open for public sliding on Saturdays and Sundays during the winter months from noon to 4:00 p.m., except on race days (spectators are encouraged). Equipment and instruction are included in the fee ($10 for children, $20 for adults, group rates available). For larger events, our snack shop is open and sells pizza, hot dogs, candy bars, chips, and hot coco. Come for the afternoon and bring your friends! You can reserve the hill for private parties, too. Today, a luge is used to transport an individual or two person team down an icy track comprised of multiple curves at speedsoif 85 mph, no brakes included. The luge itself is composed of an aerodynamic racing shell suspended from two bridges that connect to the runners, or kufens The only parts of the sled that touch the ice are the two runners called steels, which are attached to the kufens There are built in grips for each hand. The athletes, called 'sliders,' wear aerodynamic racing suits and helmets with clear or tinted visors that extend under the chin to further reduce resistance. They are required to wear special zippered shoes that straighten the foot when the zipper is closed.

This body governed the sport until 1935, when it was incorporated in the Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT, International Bobsleigh and Tobagganing Federation). Luge Vets Rule Seal Rock Run
By Vince Castellanos
EXPN.com Aug. 14, 2000 SAN FRANCISCO Street Luge went back to the future as X Games veterans and street luge pioneers told the young guns of the sport to "bring it!". Dry, warm conditions made the track at the Seal Rock Run course fairly sticky and provided excellent traction. The racers reiterated that it was easily the best X Games Street Luge track in history. Champions were crowned in the Super Mass and Dual event finals and bragging rights were up for grabs in "King of the Hill". Super Mass Pereyra felt like he had something to prove after the 1999 X Games. A pair of controversial fourths left him unsatisfied, and he waited an entire year to earn his revenge. An admitted headcase, Pereyra likes to say, "It takes me a year to talk myself into winning and a half-second to talk myself out of it." This year, he used that half-second to complete the thrilling pass. Dansie, the 32-year-old Pro Street Luge pilot, claimed his fourth X Games luge medal (and, when you add his 1997 Winter X Games silver medal in Super-Modified Shovel, that brings his total to five overall). Three of the Street Luge medals are silver, and, unfortunately, none of them are gold. Dansie earned the No. 1 seed for the third time in his six X Games, but he is still searching for the top prize.

We’re Emily and Jenn, and when winter comes, we don’t just go sledding, we LUGE! Luge is one of the fastest sports on ice. We’re always looking to improve our race time. We started thinking more about how to improve when we visited the New York Hall of Science. They have a pair of slides at their outdoor Playground Science exhibit. Going down the slides made us wonder: Can we improve our start times by paddling more with our hands?
We train at Lake Placid, where the 1980 Winter Olympics were held. We recorded our start times for several kinds of start, including no paddling, paddling once, paddling twice, and paddling five times. We did at least three trials for each kind of start, and calculated our average time.
Our slowest starts happened when we didn’t paddle at all. Our starts improved when we added one or tow paddles. When we tried five paddles, we found we actually slowed ourselves down! Paddling three or four times seems to be the best.

T he course in Providence was a 2500 foot winding street with 5 hairpin turns and one full 90 degree ! Only inches above the ripping pavement... this is some scary shit!
T he Gravity heats were set on 4 and 6 man runs - meaning that besides not flipping over - the racers had to watch out for each other!
F irst man across the finish line wins!
STREET LUGE 4 MAN FINAL
"Best race I've ever had in my life!!" claimed Sean Mallard of Fullerton, CA when he won the Gold. Mallard had a lucky day! He wasn't even in the running until John Rogers was disqualified for a lane violation in the Semi's which bumped Mallard into third and into the finals.
Biker Sherlock , San Diego, CA took the Silver for $10,000, which when added to his other 3 metals, brought his take home prize money up to $35,000!!! George Orton , 39, from Juntington Beach, CA took the Bronze.

E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, August 24, 2003 by the Long Island, NY Newsday The Air Is Thick With Lies by Jimmy Breslin I was a few hundred yards up on Liberty Street when the Two Tower of the World Trade Center blew. I put my nose inside my shirt and ran through smoke that turned day into night. In the smoke were computers, asbestos, pulverized glass, human bodies, lead. I got on another street and One Tower blew up. Again, the air was black with a pulverized 110-story building. I did not feel well for two months. I never said anything because I was too embarrassed. A couple of thousand had died. So many others were scorched and broken and maimed. I had no right to open my mouth, I thought. Besides, from the first day, the government's Environmental Protection Agency had announced that air was remarkably clean. Work on. Breathe on. You're fine. They lied. They lied because the administration did not want people not going to work. They lied the first week and they lied the week after that and they have lied every day of the past two years to the people of this city. Christine Whitman was the EPA head until recently. I wasn't disturbed that her education was a jump horse school, but I thought she was better than standing up and doing what she was told by George Bush's White House, telling lies to a public who had to breathe this air. Turns out she isn't much of a human being.
