“Lawn bowling engages every part of you. There’s the competitive aspect and the fact that even at my age, I still want to take you on. But it’s all in good fun. Unless, of course I lose. Which I don’t.” Michael. Competitive Bowler.
“ I really, really like lawn bowling and, I like to try and beat the other people who won’t think I’m very good because I’m younger than them. Mostly, I just like to have fun and this is a lot of it. Oh, but I am good too.” Mike. Serious Bowler.
“ It’s a combination of brains and skill that makes you a good player. The good thing is,  you don’t need any special equipment. It’s just you and your opponent. It can get quite competitive, but every game is different and it’s always, always fun.” Brenda. Fun Seeker.

lawn bowls
Lawn bowling for the blind was first introduced at an international level by Dr. Julius Sergay in South Africa in 1977. The then six playing countries, Australia, England, Canada, Scotland, Zimbabwe and South Africa were invited to play in the first World Championships and also to form an Interntional Association. The Association has steadily increased in membership and now has twelve member countries. In addition to the previously mentioned six Israel, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Wales, Malaysia and Kenya are members with efforts now being aimed at the USA, Africa and Asia to join the Association. The twelve member countries boast a membership of some 5000 players which makes it the largest outdoor activity for the blind. World Championships are held every four years and so far in addition to Scotland, South Africa, England, Australia, Zimbabwe, Canada and in 1977 New Zealand, have hosted the Championships. All three sight categories have individual championships for both men and women. The next World Championships are to be held in Melbourne, Australia in 2009. In 1994 blind lawn bowling was introduced in the Commonwealth Games and in 1996 in the Paralympic Games, and in both cases the concept was well received.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Our club was founded in 1936, when Mayor John Clark obtained the approval of the City Council to install a green at his own expense. In 1958, a clubhouse was donated and in 1963 a second green was laid. In the 1960s, over 150 bowlers could be seen all dressed in white. When membership waned, the second green was lost to the basketball court. We are a smaller, more informal club now and are seeking new members.

King Henry VIII once banned lawn bowling for all but the wealthiest. The reason he gave: people were spending so much time at it that they were neglecting their jobs.
Happily for today's enthusiasts the ban was lifted in 1845, so we can all enjoy this leisurely outdoor sport.

Lawn bowling or "bowls," as the game is known throughout John B. Moore Lawn Bowling in Central Park. the British Commonwealth is played on 120 ft. x 15 ft. rinks within a 120 ft. square green. The object is to roll the bowl so that it comes to rest close to a small white ball (the jack) at the far end of the rink. The three-pound bowl, made of a plastic composite, does not roll in a straight line. Due to its shape (it is biased, not round), the bowl rolls in a curve. A player wins points by placing more bowls closer to the jack than his or her opponent. Games are played by individuals or two-, three-, or four-person teams. Simple, huh? Did we mention that this was a British game?

The Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club is located in central Florida in the charming city of Mount Dora. Mount Dora is a few miles north of Orlando and is situated at the eastern end of Lake Dora. The Club is on Edgerton Court which is only a couple of short blocks from the center of town down by the lake. We have fourteen hard surface lawn bowling rinks where we bowl Monday through Saturday in the morning. Depending upon the time of the year, we also bowl in the afternoon, October to April, and in the evening, April to October. The Club is fundamentally a social bowling Club but hosts a number of tournaments for the more competitive Club members. In addition to bowling, there are numerous social events during the course of the year. The Club also sponsors bridge games twice a week, art classes during the late winter, early spring, Mah Jongg weekly as well as eucher and bunco games. The annual dues include all the green fees, the social events (except the Annual Banquet), bridge and the art classes. Spectators are always welcome. Most of the time a member will be available to help explain the game to visitors. It is easy to tell if the games are social events or a tournament. If all the players are dressed in white, the games are part of a tournament. Normally, the players wear their everyday street clothes to bowl socially.

Green On This Side Lawn bowlers practice daily to prepare for tournaments, get exercise and have fun By Amy Jenkins When thinking about outdoor sports, golf, tennis and football are usually a few that come to mind, but some Sunnyvale residents are meeting in Murphy Park to take advantage of the greens that are specifically designed for the game of lawn bowling. Whereas there are approximately 5,000 men and women involved in the United States, there are thousands of bowling green clubs and hundreds of thousands of players in England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Overton speculates that the reason there are so few players in California, compared to the thousands from his hometown in England, is that there are so many other things to do here, such as skiing and surfing. After traveling internationally for tournaments, he says that the fastest greens are in New Zealand and Australia. He says that next year he plans to play in Hawaii, New Zealand and Fiji. There are 58 active members of the Sunnyvale Lawn Bowls Club, who enjoy the sport, exercise and socialization. Right now they meet Monday through Thursday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. to practice for the tournaments that will begin opening day in Oakland on March 23. In May there are many tournaments in which the Northern California clubs compete against each other. The other clubs are in Oakland, San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose and Santa Cruz, says Stu Shoemaker, 86, public relations officer and member of the Sunnyvale club.
