How are we organized? What can we do for you? Rink diagram Just what is this game anyway? The game of Lawn Bowls is played on a RINK within the GREEN. The green is at least 120 feet square. There are eight rinks on each green, each at least 14 feet wide. The rinks are numbered 1 through 8, with boundaries defined by a black stripe on each side of the rink number.
The general object of the game is for participants to roll each of their BOWLS as close as possible to a single small white ball called the JACK (or kitty). Bowls may hit the jack, but the jack must remain within the boundary markers or the END will be declared "dead." Bowls are likely to hit other bowls, and may propel them into a position that is perhaps nearer to the jack, or perhaps to a distant position outside the boundary marker line that will take them out of play.
Games are played between opposing teams, each with from one to four players. SINGLES games are played between two players, DOUBLES between two pairs, TRIPLES between teams of three, and rinks between teams of four players.
Each BOWLER has a matching set of four bowls. Each bowl in a set has a matching pair of distinguishing decorations on opposite sides. The number of bowls that each player uses is dependent on the number of team members. Bowls are not perfectly spherical, and will not roll straight. One side is slightly flattened, and it is toward that side with its BIAS that will draw the path of the bowl in a sweeping arc. The mastery of this phenomenon is at the heart of the challenge and excitement of the game.

The history and rules of lawn bowling
Rules and history of lawn bowling! Lawn bowling by any name – bowls, bocce, bowling on the green; is thousands of years old, yet today it remains popular world wide. Here's why.
"Bowls", "Bowling On The Green", "Bocce", "Lawn Bowling": by all of these names, lawn bowling has been around for several thousand years. Some rules have likely changed over that time, but the fundamentals seem to be consistent, certainly since the game's historic record was started in the 14th Century. Historians suggest the game made its way across Europe with Julius Caesar's centurions. At that time, and still today among Italians, the game was known as "bocce". By the 13th Century, "bowls", was entrenched in the British Isles. At the turn of the century, 1299 AD, the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club was organized in England. The club remains active today, the oldest of record in the world. Global politics threatened the game for a time. In the 14th Century, it was banned for commoners in France and England because archery, essential for defense, was losing popularity. The Scottish were having none of it. In Scotland the game continued uninterrupted, a favorite among even such legendary notables as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. In Glasgow today 200 public bowling greens are in operation, including some enclosed greens for winter play. Today's rules, the flat lawn, and even a dress code, seem to derive from the Scottish. Over time, the waves of Scottish emigrants took their game with them and established clubs in many countries, the colonies of the Western Hemisphere among them.

Constructed exactly as per book I was introduced to lawn bowling by my father in 1932 and have been an avid player ever since. We belonged to the Beverly Hills Club for a great many years. We travelled considerably, bowling upon many of the greens of the US and Canada, both east and west. Until the mid 60's, lawn bowling greens the world over were awful, simply awful. The greenskeepers were almost invariably retired labourers without the slightest idea between the difference of a passable green and a totally neglected one, nor did they care even a little. The ideal green must be smooth, level (plinth to plinth), have a hard surface (no thatch) with a deep rooted grass (7 to 14 inches). The key here is a grass which can be cut at 3/16" to 1/4", will stand heavy abuse and recover quickly. Growing grass requires three essentials:
  • Oxygen - which is absorbed through the roots, The roots will not penetrate deeper than they can find sufficient oxygen. This is the key.

On the most important day of his life, Sir Francis Drake forgot about the Spanish Armada and went lawn bowling. Why? Because it's fun. Find out if you've got the game to be famous nearly 500 years from now. The Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club offers free introductory lessons, Saturdays at 1 p.m. beginning May 7. The club provides all necessary equipment for the lesson. Just wear comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes. The lessons and games take about two hours. Lessons and competitions take place all season at the lanes in Frick Park , 7300 Reynolds Avenue. The club is recruiting for its youth league. They are also looking for people interested in the mysteriously complex game of croquet. Call or visit their web site at: www.lawnbowls.org to join the fun. Submitted by wweir on Thu, 12/20/2007 - 11:45pm. The edges of the green fall off as into an abyss. The corners are sloping down at an angle akin to a water slide. And there are annoying ridges that shoot up like the Cascades. Read the rest of this entry... read more
The Pumpkin Bowl Was Ghoulishly Fun
Interesting characters came out of the woodwork this year to attend the JPLBC Pumpkin Bowl on October 27th. Marie Antoinette and her friend with the tall pink hair showed for the event. Other noted guests included Jerry Garcia, the Blue Hat Lady, the Man in Plaid, and the Ghoulish Guy (pictured above). All enjoyed what the night had to offer. Bowlers bowled a short 6-end game of Cutthroat followed by chili and cornbread, then pumpkin carving, then more chili. Thank you to everyone who participated in making this event a frightenly good time!
