Welcome! To the Beikoku Rembukan Dojo...
The Beikoku Rembukan Dojo is dedicated to the advancement of Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo, a "stick art" first developed by Muso Gonnosuke in 16th century Japan. We also study Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido the sword drawing art.
Our goal is to earnestly learn and perpetuate Japanese budo within the context of Western culture.
    Who We Are...
The Beikoku Rembukan (America Martial Spirit Polishing Hall) was granted charter in 1986 and is named after the famous Rembukan dojo that once served as the hombu for Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo in Tokyo, Japan under the strict instruction of Shimizu, Takaji Sensei. Although the original RembukanDojo existed for just less than 10 years, it was home to many of today's great Jodo teachers. The Rembukan became a portal that allowed Westerners introduction to many Kobudo, arts that were virtually inaccessible at that time. Shimizu Sensei worked closely with Donn Draeger, a senior member of the dojo and the senior ranking Westerner responsible for approving non-Japanese students interested in studying the Shindo Muso Ryu. Rick began his Jodo instruction in 1974.
Today, Rick resides near Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Yuriko and their two children. Rick is the senior instructor of the Beikoku Rembukan and has been studying budo for over 40 years. Having studied under Shimizu, Takaji, Rick also spent many years studying with Kaminoda, Tsunemori serving as his first and only "Shibucho" outside of Japan. Despite a twenty-five year hiatus, Mr. Kaminoda came to visit Rick each year from 1995 thru 2000 to compliment Rick's yearly sojourn to Japan.

Co-opting Koryu traditions in Ryukyu Kobudo
There are some schools of Ryukyu Kobudo on the Japanese mainland which have adopted Japanese Classical Martial School traditions such as the dojo, training garb, etiquette, etc and have strippd away all of the Okinawan elements - including the body mechanics. The two most notable are Inoue Motokatsu's Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai and Arakawa Busen's Sokan-ryu. Interestingly, both men were students of Taira Shinken.

Koryu is a Japanese word that translates literally as old school or old tradition. It is used to refer to schools of martial arts that predate the Meiji restoration , a political event that precipitated Japan's modernisation. While arts post dating this event ( gendai budo such a judo iaido or aikido ) are valued either as sports or for self improvement, the koryu are the teachings of a feudal military culture. Designated "Type D" and nicknamed "Koryu", the new design was somewhat larger than the earlier types, featured a more powerful diesel engine and had improved operating endurance. The "Koryu" also had a five-man crew, two more than in the Type C, but the same armament of two 45cm (17.7") diameter torpedoes. The Type D midgets displaced about 60 tons and were 86 feet long. Propelled by a 500 horsepower electric motor, maximum submerged speed was 16 knots. On the surface, with an 150 HP diesel charging the electric batteries, speed was 8 knots and range about 1000 nautical miles. As with the earlier types, individual boats had alpha-numeric names in the "HA" series. The the first Type D boat

    Lonely Planet Review
Leave your shoes at the door and pad up to your room in this pretty Anglo-Japanese guesthouse with incredibly friendly service and newly refurbished rooms full of light colours, subtle florals and fresh linens. Beaming smiles greet you at the door of Koryu, a Victorian terraced guesthouse just five minutes' walk from the centre of town. The Japanese staff are effortlessly efficient and very welcoming, the rooms are immaculately kept and the simple, clutter-free style is a rare relief from Bath's fondness for chintz. Sparkling white duvets contrast with deep red carpets in the excellent-value bedrooms and despite the bright, modern style the rooms still manage to retain the period character of the original house. There's also a subtle Japanese influence throughout with breakfast menus made from handmade paper and quirky photos and prints on the walls. All rooms are en suite and have new bathroom fittings, TV, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. There's also plenty of on- and off-street parking. Review by author Etain O'Carroll Advertisement

    Traditional Japanese Jujutsu
For those interested in the study of a koryu budo / bujutsu (classical martial art) style based in Japan .
The dojo is located in the Los Angeles area. Classes are conducted by teachers with over twenty-five years of experience in martial arts. Further study opportunities would include training under our North American Chief Instructor.
This is a very conservative style of Japanese budo, which emphasizes the use of proper alignment, timing and technique, rather than brute strength to subdue an opponent. Other popular self-defense arts, such as Aikido, were derived from this art, and it has been taught heavily to both military and police for over 100 years.
Both beautiful and practical, this is a traditional, legitimate branch of budo that has been handed down from generation to generation, and has only recently become available in the Southern California area. Classes are held every Saturday from 12pm-2pm . Sorry, no kids classes.

    Nishikawa Koryu V
5th generation headmaster, Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo Born in 1953, Hachioji, Tokyo. The oldest son of headmaster Nishikawa Koryu IV, he studied puppetry from his childhood under his father and in 1966, at age 13, was given his first stage name, Nishikawa Ryuji. After studying Bunraku puppetry for two years at the National Theatre Bunraku study center, he traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, in 1987-89 to give performances and conduct workshops. In 1996, he succeeded to the headmastership of the school and took the name Nishikawa Koryu V. That same year, Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo was designated an Intangible Folk Custom Cultural Asset by the Japanese national government. Koryu-sensei's studies of traditional Japanese dance and Bunraku puppetry add depth and versatility to his art and he is involved in traditional performances and productions as well as new collaborations, including work with Shinnai, Noh, and other theatrical forms. He is also experimenting with puppetry in non-traditional formats, such as flamenco and other western dance forms. He is active in promoting awareness and understanding of Kuruma Ningyo throughout Japan and overseas. In cooperation with the Hachioji Board of Education, he provides performances and demonstrations as well as open studio days for the public, and summer and after-school programs for school children, in order to expand the traditional arts and ensure an audience for them in the future. In 2004, Nishikawa Koryu V was named Cultural Ambassador of Hachioji City.
